.tl M., Denson Ellerbe Togeau, as he is farrpiliarly called, is no stranger to South Side. Formerly in charge of the football and basketball squads, he returned this year as boxing instructor, His facile humor, intimate knowledge of sports, and excellence as a raconteur have brought him close to South Side boys. Bro. G. Busch, S.M. Two titles came to the Dragon B quintet this year largely because of the mentoring by Brother Gerard Busch who be- gan to coach winning teams in Chicago eight years ago. Characteristic of Brother Ger- ard is his sense of humor that invariably colored B basket- ball sessions. Bro. Bernard Marks, S.M. Brother Bernard's freshman baseball team is one of the classiest fledgling nines seen around South Side in several years, probably because Bro. Bernard shows 'em how. He also aided in coaching the champion varsity soccer squad, and in coaching and supervising inframural ath- letlcs. Mr. C. I. Moncken When asked To name Mr. Moncken's position in the afh- letic department, Brother Dan said, He's the Dean of Man- agers arid the transportation committee. Hes at every game and the first one at every school function. Mr. Moncken is the father of Cleary Moncken, lC. Page Fortyfflirce Bro. Lambert Muder. S.M. Assistant varsity football coach, hectograph bulletinisi, and scoremarker supreme these are Brother Larriherfs sports titles. His sysferr, of scoring varsifv basketall games is an ingenious one that keeps a sho'-by-sho' ac- count of each player-V an in- valuable checkfup that keeps ine varsity humble. Bro. Henry Collins, S.M. His C basketball squad, as fast and furious a collection of l'nli9S US 5:f'v'E'I' '.'l'IS CSSQTR' bled here, revealed several pote-n'ial varsity players. Bro. Henry was one of the povsers behind intramural baslcefrzall, officiating at regular Saturday Midget and Minim games for twelve weeks. Bro. Robert Wagner, S.M. Tennis is his forte, enthusiasm his trademark, the varsity net squad his nursling. Brother Robert is also the athletic de- partment's handyman, super- vising and refereeing game? and designing the many pcs ters, bulletins, and drive ther- mometers that flank the spir- ited walls outside the ath- letic office. Mr. Vincent Wiese Giving of himself freely, Mr. Vincent Wiese did thorough work as assistant coach of the co-champion B football squad. He learned in the hard school of experience in '36 and '37 when he did neat quarterbacking for the Drag- ons, then known as Gunners, xjf All I fs

CJZPT TW g at etlc a ministration Brother I amos Powers A coach who teaches by per- torming rather than by lecturing, Brother lames has guided the baseball squad to three Catholic League championships, and his team this year is a Prep title contender. His B football eleven, a clean-cut combination that personified its mentor's prin- ciples, fought its way to the co- championship ot the Prep League's B division. Brother lames also directed the record boxing tournament. Brother Gerard Knuth A history ot sports at South Side would be a lie without several chapters on the master of detail, the tireless supervisor and com- petent coach, Brother Gerard. He was assistant varsity football coach, varsity and B basketball coach, boxing tournament super- visor, etc., never being without some responsibility, yet passing from one position to another with cheertulness spelled from ear to ear. Mr. Sylvester Moclntolh Since Red Maclntosh took over South Sides gridders two sea- sons ago, the Dragons won tour- teen games and dropped but tivo. Previously their annual win column had averaged but two or three victories. Reds teams were characterized by their en- thusiasm and dogged fighting spirit that persisted even down to the last stone wall on the Prep League schedule. t t I Brother Dan Rabitt Brother Dan took over the reins of the Athletic Department two years ago. Under his regime the Dragons bowed into the Prep League, where they were more or less expected to serve as the circuits doormats for a year or two. But South Sides high-flying basketball team had plenty to say about that, and the baseball squad is a Prep championship contender. It was Brother Dan who intro- duced the junior varsity idea to South Side athletics. He is also co-cleviser of ten-man soccer. In his spare time he coached the soccer eleven to a state championship. xjf ,nfl Z t 3 Page Forty-Two
