B.A.. l'1'rt'-f1'i11t'ifwl tum' Y'1't't1.t'11t't'1' Brother Iohn came to South Side this year as vice- principal, chief of the exchequer, controller of the stationery department, and instructor in mathe- matics. He brought to his offices seven years of experience in principalship and thirty-four in teaching with a smile. Brother lolin is not above unlimbering his dignity to umpire an impromptu baseball game or play at words with some sprouting wit. Reverend Iohn Dockter. M.A., blmfiltrfzi Before his transfer to McBride at the end of the first semester, Father Dockter, simple eager thorough, served as South Side's chaplain Father was titular teacher of Senior A and energciic moderator of the Central Committee. His bi weekly spiritual bulletins furnished stimulating subiect matter for the Catholic Action meetings in every class. He was the constant power behind the record food drive at Christmas. . Reverend Alfred Rube, M.A., fllltlfftlfll Although he came to South Side in Septem- ber to rest from his duties as president of St. Marys University, since the Christmas holidays good-natured Father Babe, titular teacher of Senior D, has performed the added duties of school chaplain and director of the Central Committee. His sincerity, understand- ing and unalloyed cheerfulness have made him one of the most popular teachers in the upper divisions of the school. Brother William Schneider. B.A.. !t't'yff.t-mfr' Most of the seniors and Juniors are familiar with him as the Boyal High Distributor of Tardy Slips and pungent commentator on excuses. Certain of the sophomores know him better as a penetrating Latin instructor. Many Hhookiesf' call him Renfrew because he always gets his man. Everyone sees in him a serious but genial religious and ver- satile teacher who, unlike Achilles, is univer- sally foolproof. Purge Eight

To the Graduates of 1939: As you complete your high school years you feel the satisfaction of accomplishment, a prideful pleasure which is shared by all who have a sincere interest in you. We con- gratulate you. It is our prayer that in the years of your Catholic training you have come to know and value genuine and last- ing success. We hope that on the road of life you will not permit yourselves to be diverted by the pleasures of the wayside, but that you will travel straight to your goal. This system, formed in l9ll with the Kenrick High School for boys, now includes the South Side Catholic, William Cullen McBride and Hosati-Kain high schools. The direction of such a system demands cease- less energy and constant perseverance, such as can be given only by a man of quality like the Reverend Alfred G. Thomson, its superin- tendent. Through his efforts and the efforts of his predecessors, the diocesan high schools have gained the highest recognition of the State University and the North Central Asso- ciation. xjf ,nfl z fs J Y

Bro. lame: Powers. B.A. Brother Iames conducts his senior Religion, American His- 'ory and Civics classes under the slogan Learn it quickly and learn it well. His titu- lar class is Senior C. He is the only member of the orig- inal faculty still stationed at South Side. Bro. Charles Kinaky. B.A. Brother Charles, who taught the fathers of many of the graduates. is one of three teachers who have been at South Side during the four- year stay of the class of '39. He is now in charge of the Typewriting Department, N. Y. A. work, and the Paper Drive. Bro. Felix Umscheid, B.A. Titular teacher of Senior A, Brother Felix was zealous in dramatics, being co-designer of the stage-set for Whistling in the Dark and serving as technical adviser for his class' production of Franken stein. He teaches senior Religion and elementary and advanced German. Bro. Matthias Kessel, BA. Before his transfer to the Brothers' pioneer school in Peru, Brother Matthias taught courses in Religion and Eng- lish to Sophomore B, and German to yuniors and seniors. He also directed the glee club until he received his new appointment. Bro. Henry Collins. B.A. Courses in junior and senior French, Modern History, and sophomore Religion are Bro, Henry's daily work. Versa- tile, he exchanged his English courses for Father Dockter's French at mideyear. A Third member of the veteran trio, Brother Ioseph is 1C'1'lQ in both the scientific and commercial departments of the school, teaching Physics and Shorthand in addition to his senior Religion class, 4B. He also conducted the Senior Play ticket sale drive, in which his titular class led. Bro. Geo. Schuster. M.A. Brother George, titular teacher of lunior C, conducts the four senior English classes. His extracurricular work consists in advising the staff of the Clarion. the school paper, and this souvenir book. Brother George came ta South Side this year from lvlaryhurst Nor- mal, Kirkwood. Bro. Lambert Mader, B.A. A giant in the language de- partment, Brother Lamber' teaches first, second, and fourth year Latin. Sopho- more D is his titular class and bulletins his hobby. lt is he who hectographs and mimeographs the daily bulle- tin and the innumerable ar- tistic activity posters, Bro. Dan Bcbitt. M.S. Brother Dan teaches Eco- nomics and Bookkeeping To the tuniors and seniors who have come to understand the large significance for good or evil in the small word theme. Brother Dan is a native of South St. Louis, having haunted Carondelet Park as a barefoot boy.
