H. S. means much more. lt is the ringing of the last bell and the laughter in the halls. lt is a club donating pennies for World Service and a splash in the swimming pool. lt is the pride of a well-earned grade and the work of a research paper. lt is a noisy typing room and a packed gymnasium. Southport is the idea of a well-rounded edu- cation, the faith of a heritage, and the inspir- ation of continuing progress. Truly, S. H. S. has earned her reputation as the Home of Champions.

These improvements have made a more complete curriculum. ln the laboratories, with modern and precise equipment, students are now able to pursue their personal interests. Research labs and various tests enable them to tind the specific areas in which they have the most ability. The business department with calculators, adding machines, tran- scribers, an addressograph, and mimeograph mach- ines also gives students practical working experience in their education. In the modern world of today, the need for im- proved reading increases everyday. The Develop- mental Reading program with Mr. Wells at its helm steers students to improve both their read- ing speed and comprehension. ln the fall, all of the senior students took an I-Q test. This test and other similar tests give the counselors and teachers an idea of the capabilities of each student.
