Representing Southport as an outstanding musician, Ted Jenkins was the guest soloist with the Butler Uni- versity orchestra at one ot their concerts in the spring. Excellence in academics at S.l-l.S. is evident to those who have seen the Exercise Into Knowledge team consisting ot Robert Spear, Nancy Ellis, Bill Parmenter, and Mike Kasting in action. Here the team practices with their alternates Kathy Sasek and Steve Plummer. Winawie Eads has won national acclaim for her poetry and prose. VVinnie's writings have been published in lngenue and Literary Cavalcade Magazine, in addition, she earned a tirst in the National Council ot Teachers ot English Contest and a second in the Schol- astic Magazine Writing Awards Contest. Consistent with the heritage ot Southport High School have been the numerous accomplishments ot our stu- dents. ln all the areas ot academies, recognition has been merited and granted tor excellence of work. On these pages are recorded a tew ot the many awards earned by some ot our outstanding students. The De- bate Team, Exercise lnto Knowledge Team, Repre- sentatives to Boys' and Girls' State, musicians, and essayists have each contributed significantly to our well-rounded academic program. lO

amloionri f .... John Butler, a senior, received the honor of being chosen for the All-State football team for his superb football playing. These seniors have a record to be proud of, four years of perfect attendance. They include Kaye Turner, Joan Wilson, Jackie Shook, Warren Hacker, Byron Stevens, Steven Schulz, Sandy Yandell, Trudy McDaniel, Nancy Brandenburg, Virginia Kirkpatrick, Judy Dowden, Larry Milburn, and Rita Hazlett. lnot pictured? The word champion extends to a variety of fields, and the students of S,l-l.S. have captured champion- ships in many of them. Southport students have won recognition in fields ranging from attendance to de- bate. With a heritage such as Southp3rt's, our future can only be prosperous and rewarding, but it is up to the future students of S,l-l.S. to maintain the high standards that those before us have set. At the annual Sweater Swirl Dance, Roger Sherfick and Linda Conover Ccenter couplel won first prize in the booty contest, Susie Thomas and Steve Carson placed second. 'TN
