For nearly a century this quality has been evinced at S.H.S. through excellence in scholastic undertakings, ath- letic events, and social leadership, As students ot Southport High School, we are constantly perpetuating this heritage of quality. Our state champions, our renowned scholars, and our student leaders exemplify the spirit ot Southport which we bequeath to future generations of Southport students. Through the years the heritage of the students of Southport has been ever changing. lt is evident in this picture ofthe first gradu- ating class of l894, with its membership of only tive graduates. Today, the graduating class ot l964 has a total membership of five hundred. Standing are the members ot the first commencement held at S.H.S.: Minnie Clifford CSmockl, John Hendricks, Jean Reno, William List, and Alice Todd CRousel. The members of the ad- ministration seated here were, Chris Grube, Trustee, Joseph Sa- ban Pruett, Principal, and Henry B. Flick, County Superintendent. pr - 4 ss if S lx is 355 is E3 NS ur S miniafrafmn oclay For many years The Perry Township schools were un- der the supervision of a trustee, but in i958 a met- ropolitan school board, with Dr. Glenn as superintend- ent, was organized, Pic- tured at the right are Mr, Fred Henry, Asst Secretary of The School Board, Dr. E. The name S. H. S. echoes in the ears of those who hear it because of its outstanding reputa- tion, but to the students of Southport S. H. S. means much more. lt is the ringing of the last bell and the laughter in the halls. lt is a club donating pennies for World Service and a splash in the swimming pool. lt is the pride of a well-earned grade and the work of a research paper. lt is a noisy typing room and a packed gymnasium. Southport is the idea of a well-rounded edu- cation, the faith of a heritage, and the inspir- ation of continuing progress. Truly, S. H. S. has earned her reputation as the Home of Champions. f 4' These doors opening into the world of Southport are just a beginning for sophomores and a closing for seniors. o l o O 0 O A1 B, 4, A .,f,ff,,,4A,Q, fn 7 ,,, . 'E U. V . 4 I W A x .xdcaclemiczi -our c adaroom lzerifage Through the years, Southport High School has made many academic advances. These improvements have made a more complete curriculum. ln the laboratories, with modern and precise equipment, students are now able to pursue their personal interests. Research labs and various tests enable them to tind the specific areas in which they have the most ability. The business department with calculators, adding machines, tran- scribers, an addressograph, and mimeograph mach- ines also gives students practical working experience in their education. In the modern world of today, the need for im- proved reading increases everyday. The Develop- mental Reading program with Mr. Wells at its helm steers students to improve both their read- ing speed and comprehension. ln the fall, all of the senior students took an I-Q test. This test and other similar tests give the counselors and teachers an idea of the capabilities of each student. Swv - il M Q5 gg , , 5 1-252: WM 5 D . f, ,f N Q KX w, 1 gm, Y . Representing Southport as an outstanding musician, Ted Jenkins was the guest soloist with the Butler Uni- versity orchestra at one ot their concerts in the spring. Excellence in academics at S.l-l.S. is evident to those who have seen the Exercise Into Knowledge team consisting ot Robert Spear, Nancy Ellis, Bill Parmenter, and Mike Kasting in action. Here the team practices with their alternates Kathy Sasek and Steve Plummer. Winawie Eads has won national acclaim for her poetry and prose. VVinnie's writings have been published in lngenue and Literary Cavalcade Magazine, in addition, she earned a tirst in the National Council ot Teachers ot English Contest and a second in the Schol- astic Magazine Writing Awards Contest. Consistent with the heritage ot Southport High School have been the numerous accomplishments ot our stu- dents. ln all the areas ot academies, recognition has been merited and granted tor excellence of work. Our new building, the largest yet, has housed many students since l958. ln the modern offices of today, many different pieces Of equip- ment are used. In the course of Office Machines and Filing, the students learn how to use these various machines. I4 ln the Metal shop, boys have the opportunity to work with a great variety of tools. Many girls gain practical office experience by working in the office of the school during their free period. I W, ,, , ,, i l i This year a third year Latin class was offered. Under the instruction of Mrs. Majors, the class studied the works of Cicero. In the Course of Home Economics, part of the program was a study of home nursing. in this program, girls learned the basic techniques in the care of the sick and injured at home, yr By winning high honors for their writing ability Nora Ellis had her poem published in Young America Sings, and Barbara Frick had her essay published in Young America Speaks. Through the years we have achieved many goals, met many friends, and with the memory of all this we will be- gin our journey on the road of life. This year under the leadership of our class officers, president, Terry Ryker, vice-president, Jerry Duhamell, secretary-treasurer, Trudy McDaniel, and the counseling of Mr. Krause, the class has looked forward to the many events that have taken place. Although our twelve years of schooling have come to an end, the memory of S. H. S. will remain in our hearts as a place where we have shared our joys and sorrows, our victories and our defeats. Burchfield pulls down an opponent. All clear for a score. gricbron Last September when the S.H.S. football team took to the gridiron to face county foe Ben Davis, all ln- diana took notice, The Cardinals had received much favorable publicity from the Indianapolis newspapers, and the gossip stories had it that the Cards were better than good. The team, under Coach Robbins, proved they were better than good by holding their first five opponents to everything but a tally on the record books. The Connersville Spartans was the first team to hit pay dirt against the Cards, but they still went down in defeat 63-7. The three games following the Connersville encounter saw the Cards give up the remaining 40 points they allowed their opponents to acquire this season, plus a loss to former S.C.C. for Columbus and a tie with arch-rival Manual. But the Cards stopped this nonsense of letting the other team score and finished the season with scores of 26-O and 6-O. Special honors this season were given to senior John Butler for being selected to the All-State Foot- ball Squad.
