N ALLEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBR 3 1833 01758 0868 GC 977,202 S089HS, 1962 1962 ANCHOR SOUTHPORT HIGH SCHOOL INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA j-rovn , Our senior class officers Buzz Hickman, president; Jim Hohit, vice-president; Parry Pasch, secretary-treas- urer, with Mr, Edwin Krause, class sponsor, realize that the last year for the class of ' 62 is about to reach the finale. At one of the portals during an intermission at the Prom appear Steve Higgs, Karen Hollingsworth, Bill Voorhies, Marcia Coates, Sharon Klatte, Don Norton, Vonda Hooper, Ed McCarty, Eileen Newcomb, and Don Owens. y lonie of •— licinipions Tm iTniin Msmm saoHKBt ■■■-XtiUvfsSa LOCAL HISTORY ' ' ' ' CLOSED f- oint of View From this threshold, Mr. Leedy often observes everyday life at S.H.S. Openrng the door to a new way of life at S.H.S. are the freshman class officers: Phil Wright, secretary- treasurer; John Hickman, vice-presi- dent; Tom Ryan, president; and Mrs. Pearson, class sponsor. Our life at Southport is continually evolving. The only way to stop time is to record the past in memories, for as seniors become alumni, as underclassmen become upperclassmen, there will be new faces and new classes. From this point of view, we immediately begin to review the important facets of our life at S.H.S. Those of us who are planning for college are grateful for Southport ' s high rating, both academic and social. We proudly recall the many football and bas- ketball games in which we participated in our meager way as boost- ers of OUR teams Now and later we shall point with pride to the many honors and tro- phies won by our classmates. We shall relive the dances and thank silently the many unknown figures who convert the concrete gymna- sium into a glittering, abstract mirage. Life at S.H.S. with its history and traditions fills, from fieshmen to senior, with a sense of unity. As each of us in turn proceeds silently along the aisles, clad in cap and gown, we will recapture these scenes — each of us from his own point of view. i.l -J l 4 ' royn ur jjoini f View i yound J he i chooi Bob Cameron, Patti Walker, and Janet Adams join 5.H.S. Seniors to brighten the Christmas season on Annual Senior Dress- up Day. Southport High School is more than a mass of brick and mortar. It is a society in itself composed of many people from all walks of life. It is a society which helps these people to grow mentally, socially, and physically. Southport ' s foundation is not of cement, but of hearts and spirits of students and faculty mem- bers, past and present. Its cornerstone is made up of school spirit and pride. This pride enables Southport students to rank high in any field in which they en- deavor or compete. Sue Hiatt and Mr. Theil inspect some of the landscaping made possible through the Student Council to beautify our school grounds. Mr. Leedy mingles freely with the students in friendly conversation. We profoundly regret the resignation of Mr. Leedy, for we feel that we have lost an out- standing educator who has led S.H.S. through many successful years. Faculty and students alike extend to Mr. Leedy best wishes for happiness in retirement. Senior Joe Daniels represented Southport at the National Youth Conference on the Atom held in Chicago during the month of November. S.H.S. exceils academically as well as athletically. Panel members Joe Daniels, Sob Adams, Carol Grube, Judi Utterback, Dianne Todd, and Patti Walker with Mr. Dart, sponsor, demonstrated their skill on the ' Expedition Into Knowledge T.V. show. 4 IL Wav We Xoo f J{. W onors Names-Games-Aims: It is these three words that sum up the people, sports, and activities of Southport High School. As seniors, we reflect on the gnarled and craggy path that has led us unceasingly upward. The path itself IS lined with the familiar names and faces of people whom we have known, with the prizes of victory which we have nobly won, and with the honors and achievements which we have received in working faithfully toward our aim and goal. Mr. Krause congratulates Joe Daniels, finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Jane Robertson, senior, exhibits the plaque presented to her as the second place award in the Dental Division of the Regional Science Fair. For the second consecutive year, Dave Frick, senior, won outstanding speaking honors at the Purdue Legislative Assembly. D.A.R, good citizen, Judi Utterback, was chosen on the basis of personality ratings for dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Barbara Kappmeyer, junior, who won the title M iss Baton Twirler of Indiana traveled to Galveston, Texas, and placed second in the national contest. Behind us lies the indisputable and unforgettable past with all of its grand victories and beneficial education, but before us lies the never ending future with its dutiful promise of even richer victories and higher achievements. We have been a part of a great tradition of a great school; therefore, let us walk briskly up the interminable road of life that forever leads to the future and give honor and respect to those who have given an abundant assistance in our perpetual search for knowledge. Southport has opened many new doors for each and find our place In life. Carol Grube represents her class and Southport by attaining the highest academic rank and the title ' f valedictorian. cj wm_ m- -emr. •t- 4 40 «i, mi. mtm mm mr : 5, 1Si:i «5 Wt4 W -i1BSM(P Seniors, make last minute preparations for the big moment. There are five dances held during the course of the year. The Sweater Swirl is held in the fall amid autumn leaves and pumpkins, and the Christmas Dance highlights the exciting yule season The annual Turnabout Twirl is anxiously awaited by the boys as the girls make use of the saying, Turnabout is fair play. But the event of the year is the Junior-Senior Prom when the juniors bid farewell to the seniors. To close the social whirl, the May Dance is held in honor of the spring athletes. ges on their dates before attending the Turnabout Preparing for the festivities of the Christmas dance, Winter Wonderland, are seniors Kathy Euler D.ck Rodebaugh, Steve Schoultz, Janice Miller, Steve Higgs, and Judi Fox Juniors and seniors enjoy the beauty of the Japanese garden that was the setting of the Junior-Senior Prom, Sayonara. The senior girls, keeping with tradi- tion, present the finale of the Talent Show with songs of praise to S,H,S. With all acts aboard, the showboat Cardinal Belle, which set the stage for the Talent Show, sailed along leaving loads of talent to he carried by the waves to the audience on the shore. Varied j tudeyit Each year on Easter Sunday, people from our community churches come together to commemorate the Resurrection with r Easter Sunrise Service. Various students, many choirs, and the orchestra participate in this event to make it one of the most inspiring presentations of the school. Norma Boyd and Terry Voipp participated with various other students in the Nativity Scene created for the Christmas convocation f ' rodiictions Themes such as Let ' s Grind Up the Redskin Pea- nuts and many more adorned the homecoming floats. Since weeks of preparation accompanied this gala event, it was the most successful home- coming in Southport ' s history. The crowning of Homecoming Queen Andrea Decver climaxed the evening ' s festivities. With her court of Kathy Ball, Barbara Kappmeyer, Pam Young, Nancy Howard, and Patty Pasch, she happily reigned not only over the Homecoming but also the Sweater Swirl. A student may also gain valuable practical experience through his work as physical education assistant, of- fice girl, cadet teacher, or as teacher ' s secretary. Sit lux (Let thtre bi knowledge) is the motto of the Latin classes. This year ' s enrollment of Latin sttidents is the largest in the history of Southport High School. Knowing that his first re- sponsibility was to the welfare of his students, Mr. Routh never faltered in his duty — to equip his pupils as best he knew how to be good, successful citizens. While he is no longer with us physi- cally, we are certain that his memory and, what would be more important to him, the good that he did will go on and on. (Zlass Of 1962 The Class of 62 look back on their years at Southport as years of fun, education, and experience. Academic awards, homecoming, South Central Conference foot- ball champs, sectional basketball champs, and other titles won in the various other sporting events through- out our final year are just a few of the many goals we have achieved. Along with Mr. Krause are our class officers Buzz Hickman, president; Jim Hohit, vice- president; Patty Pasch, secretary-treasurer. With the help and guidance of these people, our senior year has been brought to a very successful conclusion; a year we shall never forget. . -■, f ' 6«! tfi Aita Abney, Mildred Adams, Janet Adams, Robert Akeman, Edward Albaugh, Michael Aliff, Stephen Altmann, Gladys Anderson, Rick Arthur, Carol Ashley, Brenda Askin, Carolyn Askin, Lois Bailey, Larry Ball, Kathy Ballard, James Barker, Mary Jo Barkhaus, Robert Barnd, Patricia Barnhill, Gloria Beatty, Jack Beder, Linda Beler, William Bell, John Bennett, Stephen Berger, Sharon Bertram, Donna Betzler, Susan Bland, William Blubaugh, Barbara Boggs, Steven Boone, Kay Bowers, Nancy Brandenburg, Thomas Bridenstine, James Briner, Cha.ies Brink, Sandra Brooks, Bob Bullard, Linda Burk, Cheri Burkert, Richard Burkhart, Christine Burnett, Judith Burnette, Stanley Bush, Karen Cameron, Robert Cannon, Alma Carmichael, James Casey, Douglas , ■' - i .. One must consider both in order to appreciate their work in improving our school; for understanding and cooperation are two-way propositions. The officers who coordinate the Council ' s efforts are Dave Frick, president; Rex Joseph, vice-president; Andrea Dee- ver, secretary; and Janice LaFlamme, treasurer. Would you like to learn more about the people, customs, history, and ideals of our south-of-the-bor- der neighbors? If so, participate in the Spanish Club; the activities this year in- clude everything from the breaking of the pinata to the dances of a lady from Peru. One of the main celebrations was the ban- quet at Christmas featuring a Perubian wo- man who danced and discussed educational problems in her country. The officers wear- ing the native dress of South America are president, Vicki Davis; vice president, Fred Fleeetwood; secretary-treasurer, Sandy Sells. The sponsor of the club is Mr. Rodriguez. This picture portrays a familiar scene in the days of the Romans, for chariot races were one of the most popular forms of sport and entertainment. Appearing with some of the members are the officers: Keith Smith, consul; Pam Young, pro-consul; Barbara Braford, aedile; and John Rhobard, quaes- ter. This club known by the latin name Soda- lites is sponsored by Mrs. Majors; the mem- bers are affiliated with the Junior Classical League, a national Latin organization. In this world of challenge, we find mathe- matics becoming ever more popular and more necessary. The Beginriing Math Club increases the knowledge of its members in the field of math and teaches new methods of solving problems. Sponsored by Mr. Fow- ler, the club cultivates the ideas of the members and encourages them to continue their study. Each year the club takes a field trip in the spring. This year they also play- ed a game similar to television ' s College Bowl. It v as good experience and taught each student more about math. Anyone who is taking a mathematical subject may join the club. 72 JHJicu OU The need for better qualified and more ex- perienced people in any field is constantly in demand. The Medicii Club, sponsored by Miss Pernod, acquaints the students with the needs of medical work and stimulates their interest in the medical profession. Those who are interested in this branch of science must maintain a C + average to qualify for Medicii membership. It is hoped that through this organization the students will wish to continue their study to become skilled doctors, nurses, and tech- nicians. Officers are Mark Folkening, pre- sident; Louis Zickler, vice-president; and Jane Robertson, secretary-treasurer. 7 „ -C ,c,w (ZU What a shock! Mr. Ellis Robins, sponsor of the Phy-Chem Club, is demonstrating the modern Van de Graaff generator which sends electricity as high as three thousand volts across the gap between the metallic spheres to the officers, Tom Sawyer, presi- dent; Tom Brandenburg, vice-president, and Carol Grube, secretary-treasurer. Through the reports and experiments presented in their monthly meetings, the members at- tempt to learn more about the major ad- vances in physics and chemistry. The club also provided safety goggles for the chem- istry classes this year. A o oijy C — rltib Going on educational field trips, having guest speakers, and conducting many var- ied and interesting programs provide an excellent scource of furthering the scienti- fic interests of Biology Club members. To become a member of this organization, one must be enrolled in beginning biology and be recommended by his biology teacher. Each member is required to conduct a part of at least one program during the year. Biology Club officers are Raymond Daringer, president; Barbara Graff, vice-president; Christine Hancock, secretary; Dick Powell, treasurer; Donna Wheatley and Doug Brooks, publicity. 73 .=i— • ' i-ary C ■lub To travel through the world of fiction jnd true-life adventure in books is the goal of the Library Club. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Black and Mrs. Morwick, the members learn how books are bound and shelved, how they are numbered, and how to find various information in the library. One of their many activities is to send two mem- bers each year to the Indiana University Lrbrary Workshop. There they learn how other school libraries function and also par- ticipate in at least two library courses. Sher- ry Thompson was B.O.O.K. Secretary for this year. Club officers are Sandy Hendricks, president; Mike Medlock, vice-president; Diane Carmichael, secretary; and Danny Riley, treasurer. Man may never reach the stars; but if he does not, it will not be the fault of South- port ' s star-minded Astronomy Club. The Astronomy Club furthers interest and know- ledge in this ancient science, which is be- coming increasingly important in today ' s world of rockets and satellites. The ambi- tious project of the club is to design and build a twelve-inch te ' lescope. Looking over the plans are Tom Brandenburg, president; Gary Van Deman, vice-president; Herma- dine Clark, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. Pickard, the club ' s sponsc. Each day with the growing emphasis on science, mathematics is becomin g more im- portant and vital in our lives The Advanc- ed Math Club is organized for the sole pur- pose of enabling members to advance themselves in the study of mathematics. In order to become a member of this club, one must submit a mathematical report or pass an examination. The officers for this year are president, Paul Wycoff; vice-president, Robert Lewsader; secretary-treasurer, Clifford Whitaker. The sponsor of the club is Mr, Snepp. 74 I pit a Jyi- Jxi- ' j As soon as the sponsor, Mrs. Reese, installs these officers of the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y, they will begin another active year. The club pro- gram includes participating in the annual Model United Nations, making donations to worthy organizations, and sponsoring a school sock hop. It is the obligation of each member to assist in fixing baskets of food for needy families, to make scrapbooks, to furinsh tray decorations for hospitals, and to endeavor to serve her school, church, and community in every manner possible. The officers are Charlene Mason, president; Lin- da Cunningham, vice-president; Barbara Blubaugh, secretary; Vicki Davis, treasurer; Karene Hohit, chaplain; and Judi Utterback, historian. a ,e jKi-y The four C ' s, Clean Speech, Clean living, Clean Sports, and Clean Scholarship, form the basis of this Christian organization opened to all boys regardless of race, creed, or religion.
