The modern fieldhouse is always filled with activity as students watch and par- ticipate in such sports as wrestling, swimming, basketball, volley ball, and intra-mural games, The largeness of Southport extends farther than the building itself. The faculty and ad- ministration provide students with an infinite amount of information and knowledge. We, the future leaders and citizens of the United States, have the opportunity to receive a well- rounded education here, Friendliness fills the corridors of S.H.S. Pupils find fellowship and friendship by joining any of the variety of clubs and participating in the extra-curricular activities which are available. Several colorful dances are among the activities at Southport. We are proud of Southport, and we shall en- deavor to preserve its greatness. This aerial view of Southport's campus emphasizes for the observer the large and modern facilities that the student finds in his journey through Southport. A good indication of Southport's large enrollment is the study hall, accommodating more than eighty students. He devotes one day a week to correcting students who have speech difficulties. Through the halls of Southport can be heard the many quotable quotes signifying the road to progress that scholastic achievements have been traveling. Expressions such as, The library has received some new books , or Have you seen the new speech therapy lab? , can be heard almost every day as students journey from one classroom to another. In the future new quotations will be heard as classes in economics, psychology, and others take their place. 9 Itf az realb great fbew --ff clubs but we also spent many hours yelling at pep bessuons Cheerlng for the Intramural volley ball team Ed Sullivan A devlatuon from regular School routine :S provnded for by the many varied convocatuons put on each year Their purpose IS to provude nnterestnng and educatlonal entertaunment for the student body that could not be achueved through ordnnary classroom work This year s Convocatnons brought SHS students an hour or two of unsvght unto subjects such as ath letncs the work of a spy sclence and elec: tronncs Students dnsplayed talent at holnday and specual event convocatuons ln the V958 V959 Dolphtnette Water Ballet Show these two glrls performed an oriental routine to the musrc of Love IS a Many Cplendored Thrng CISG FOUTIVIGS ff 2 K .b IO Cf J JJ , - - 1 We not only enjoyed the paid convocations by the many and watching the Cardnnalettes go through their pre- , , 5 W I 7 ' K v H9 X Q .,:f' . - ' ' so 5 f . . Matching sweaters are the attire for the annual Sweater Swirl held in honor of the fall sports. To start the holi- day season with the gaiety be-fitting it, is the Christmas Dance. The saying goes that turn- about is fair play, and at the Turn-About Twirl the girls take the responsibilities of the boys. This gives a girl a chance to catch her man. The junior class sponsors a lovely formal dance in honor of the senior class. All the re- sponsibilities of this dance fall on the junior class. The last all-school dance is the May Dance in honor of the spring sports, At the Prom, awards of plaques were presented by the junior class officers to the senior class officers in ac- knowledgement of their excellent service to their class. UIQ you 're the mom Coach R. Thiel When in spring, a young man's fancy turns to base- ball and picnics. This quote is especially true now, with the Little Leagues and younger boy's baseball teams which have been formed in our community. This early participation in the spring tends to make the caliber of' the high school players a great deal better. Warm days mean spring training for the baseball mem- bers. Around Southport, this sport is very highly re- garded and is recognized as a major sport, although they do not attract a large number of people at their games. Last season, the Cardinals enjoyed a superior l4-5 record. The team was led by the brilliant hitting of Bob Gilmore, who ended up with a .377 average. The pitch- ers were Jack Reese l7-2i, Wilbur Dean l3-li, Jerry Seay C2-OJ, and Bob Poynter l2-Zi. Batter upl This expression can be heard as the first signs of spring begin the baseball season. Swank Tennis is a comparatively new sport at Southport, but it is rapidly gaining in popularity. lt is a sport requiring good yudgment, quick reflexes, and extensive practice. Every moment of a tennis match is exciting. The par- ticipants must be in excellent condition as there is as much running as in track, as much accuracy as in bas- ketball, and as much practice required as in football. Our tennis team this year had a rugged schedule which saw them meet such teams as city champs, Cathedral. Mr. Krause, the team's coach was very much impressed by this victory as it was the best finish ever attained by the Southport club. During the long winter months the white-pill followers will be tuning up in the gym in their newly purchased net. Mr, Krause hopes that it will bring about a championship team in the rugged city-county and sectional meets in the spring. Last year the team's record was seven wins and three losses.
