4 1 .fffwuf If-fm 19 9 A CHOIR SOUTHPORT HIGH SCHOOL, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA ook 0 5 The year 1958-59 will long be remembered as the year of another momentous move, bringing with it great changes and challenges that create a new look for Southport. The greatest of these changes is to become accli- mated to our new and modernistic surround- ings. This new look, however, is set against a giant panoramic background of the past, and on this panorama are cherished memories that are held dear by every graduate who has passed through the halls of Southport High School since the first class in 1891. ln meeting the changes and challenges of the past year, we, the Senior Class of 1959, hope that we have done our part to set a standard that will always challenge the best of the students in the classes to follow. As we take our places in the world, it will be our aim to continue to use every challenge as a stepping stone to nobler achievement. After the original school building burned, the above two-story structure was erected. lt housed Southport pupils until 1930. For twenty-eight years the above building, designed after William and Mary College, served as our senior high school. lt has now become the junior high school. An enrollment of l,60O . . . a faculty of 64 . , . 63 classrooms . . . a new fieldhouse . . . and freshmen . . . all are iust a few of the many things which have produced The New Look of '59. Southport's lockers seem to grow in size behind Sandy Ganes and David Woerner. The bigger they come, the harder they fall! is the slogan of these new freshmen. As the years fly by, school life changes, and l959 saw the beginning of many innova- tions. The freshmen guided dignified upper- classmen through the halls of their former junior high. Each senior donned his best bib and tucker at Christmas time and thus orig- inated Senior Dress-Up Day. Our bigger and better Homecoming featured a parade of class floats and club cars. Braden's Raiders raised the new gym roof with their Hey, Blackie! Go! Go! Go! County tourney, sec- tional, and regional weekends furnished an opportunity for coke and slumber parties. After the games, victories were celebrated and defeats were mourned at pep sessions and soc-hops. Yes, l959, a year of senior sneakers and pizzas, will long be remembered by all. e New Look Practice, practice, and more practice-that's what The seniors chose the last day before Christmas va- made our flag corps so successful. All in- terested students are welcome to visit the museum. Eve y lace One of our most discussed new looks was the swimming pool. Four classes of boys and two of girls swim each day, as well as both boys' and girls' intramural teams. A swim- ming team of boys was organizedg and the Dolphinettes, representing the girls, held a show in the spring. ,www i Q W f ...Q--4 e 1 D r. li .. . Each year a hearing test, given by the Marion County Board of Health, is taken by the Sophomores of this school. Learnin Changes in the sports and social world at Southport became insignificant com- pared to those which took place in scho- lastic achievements. ln l959, a total of 64 teachers led students through the mysteries of subjects ranging from Latin to trigonometry. New facilities increased available subjects to include auto shop, swimming, and advanced mechanical drawing. More stress on the harder sub- jects, especially s c i e n c e and math, brought on a streamlined tour-year math course. Students can now obtain ten credits in this subject. A nd Every Clam g is more interesting when everyone can participate These student 'f , s per orm experiments twice a week under the supervision of chemistry teachers. New equipment and more room enable the classes to explore deeper into the mysteries of science. Drivers' training can now be taken for credit. A new English 5R class teaches juniors the fundamentals of gram- mar. Commercial pupils were offered business arithmetic, business law, general business, and several other courses. All of these new courses enable pupils to learn more about those sub- iects which interest them. ln these kitchen units the girls taking home economics have fun learning practical skills in the culinary art. lO Another Rembrandt or Picasso? Our first dance in the new field house was the Sweater Swirl. Mr. and Miss Scrimmage were crowned at this affair which honored football and cross country ath- letes. To protect the basketball floor, no shoes were permitted, and prizes were awarded for the most original footies. Our only other shoeless dance was the Crystal Ball. The Student Council sponsored this gala holiday affair. The boys eagerly awaited the Turn- About Twirl where the girls did the asking and furnished transportation, corsages, and after-dance refreshments. Juniors entertained seniors at the annual prom. Only members of these two classes and their guests were in- vited. The final social event of the year was the May Dance. At this formal affair May Court candidates from each class were chosen. The boys eagerly look forward to the Turn-About Twirl. lt is at this dance that the girls treat the boys to dinner, dancing, transportation and corsages, Prior to the dance, Nancy Brier pins her unique corsage on Terry Fewell. NEW FIELDHOUSE PRGVIDED This picture shows how well attended and popular the dances at Southport are. The G.A.A. Dance, held in May, honors all spring athletes and is the only formal dance open to all students in the school as well as the alumni. The Prom is the highlight of the year for each Junior and Senior. Mr. Ratliff and Mrs. Miller are seen greeting George Scearce, Nina Jo Dean, Diane Hunt, Vern Ratliff, Pat Tapscott, John Vance, Marcia Brittan and Roy Jones. . SETTING FUR MANY CES The refreshments served at every dance were enjoyed by everyone. This typical scene is from the May Dance which is sponsored by the G.A.A. Our dances in the early part of the year were characterized by no shoes on the floor. Ruby Berry and Jim Betzler are enioying one of these dances in socks. At the close of the football season each year a Mr. and Miss Scrimmage are chosen to reign at the annual Sweater Swirl. ln May, a dance in honor of the spring athletes is given by G.A.A. at which three queens are chosen to reign. The senior girl is the queen of service, the junior is queen of personality, and the sophomore is queen of beauty. Mr. and Miss Scrimmage for 1958 were Jeff Coulter and Linda Langley. Their court was composed of Vickie Davis, Kenny Nierman, Sue Wasson, Jim Green, Carolyn Goodnight, and Bob Ashman. THOSE GROWN IN G EVENTS The May Queens were senior, Lou Manning, junior, Dolores Hogue, sophomore, Donna Emmons, and their court Carolyn Goodnight, Nancy Jo Dawson, Pat Tapscott, Wilma Bockes, Cindy Orme, Edith Schnier, and Madelyn Enders. Prima donna Artith Bright fascinates her audience with a pert ballet while Helen Hardegan claims she Cain't Say No! Each year in the month of May a talent show is produced for the student body and P.T.A. Last year the theme was Cardinal Bandstandf' V The first prize of five dollars was awarded to- Don Lee and his bandg tied for second prize of three dollars were Bill Brittan with a trumpet solo and Helen Hardegan with a song from Oklahorna g third prize of two dollars was captured by John Walker for a piano solo. THE CARDIN AL BANDSTAN D As a sophomore, Kevin Drake tapped his way into the 1958 Talent Show. Two senior singing ensembles also won recognition. The finale consisted of the annual parade of senior girls singing Halls of Ivy. l I5 FAI T THE TOW PI K! Paint the Town Pink, this year's senior play, turned into a small riot when Mr. Clark, principal of Mansfield High School, instituted a turnabout day between the students and the faculty. Christy, student secretary, got confused and told the painter color number 32, which was a shocking pink, for the confer- ence room. Then there were the new tables and chairs for the cafeteria that arrived late. 16 Cast in order of appearance: . . . . . . . . Retha Eustace Sally Renwick .. Radio Voice . . Ren Tyler . . . .. Maudie staged a counter attack, she threw herself at an objectionable male with the hope that this would make her parents beg her to go back to Davy. Maudie's scheme backfired and many complica- tions arose. But all ended happily in the i958 Junior Play, Maudie and the Opposite Sex. Each year on Easter Sunday various churches of the community unite for a combined Easter Sunrise Service, the theme of which is The Resurrection. The musical portion of the program is presented by adults, students, and children who compose a com- bined choir. They represent the schools and the churches of the community. Responsible for the outstanding Sunrise Service were Miss Blanche Penrod, Chairman, and her many com- mittees. lAlso, the pupils of Southport display their talent by portraying the characters and designing the impressive background for the pageant. This represents one of the three holiday services that are celebrated. HOLIDAY DECOR Hark, the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn king.' This message was conveyed to Southport pupils by Christmas decorations prepared by the art department. The angels above, painted by Lonnie Beck, Ray Turner, and Charles Wilson, graced the west hall. Senior-ority was responsible for the beautiful Christmas tree. Democracy contest ABILITY . Our newer and bigger buildings have not only captured a new face for us, but also have inspired us to greater achievements. Our drum major, Marcia Brittan, was sent to Smith-Walbridge, a drum major training school at Syracuse, Indiana. After a week of drills and instruction, Marcia passed a na- tional test and was awarded the title of Drum Major First Class, Also, nine students from the speech and debate department repre- sented Southport in the Purdue High School Legislature. This two-day meeting was spon- sored by the speech department of the uni- versity. John Price won the Voice of Democ- racy contest at Southport with Chris Klein- henz as runner-up. Their speeches traveled by tape to the state contest. Drum Major First Class Marcia Brittan shares her title with only twenty other people in the United States. PLUS ACHIEVEMEN T The designer of the 1959 ANCHOR cover was Lonnie Beck, one of Southport's most talented art stu- dents. Lonnie entered six pictures in the National Scho- lastic Art Awards contest. He, Ray Turner, and Leslie Sponsel were awarded Gold Keys in the regional con- test, sponsored by L. S. Ayres and Co. and the TIMES. The keys entitled these students to place their entries in the national competition. Lonnie also won the right to complete for the additional cash award offered by Hallmark Cards. Highest Honor The highest honor that a high school can bestow on one of its students is that of valedictorian. Dolores Hogue was chosen for this coveted award, as she main- tained the highest scholastic average in the class of l959. Both Dee and her inspiring speech, An lm- portant Goal in Our School Life, will long. be remem- bered by the school. Her future plans are as yet un- certain, but the class agrees that Dolores will be a success in whatever she undertakes. . . .EQUAL SUCCESS Among the many honors bestowed upon Southport students this year, two of the finest came to Judy Culver. Because of her high scholastic achieve- ment and pleasant personality, Judy was selected by the faculty to be the D.A.R. representative from Southport. Judy also won the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award consisting of a gold pin and an opportunity for a scholarship. Congratulations are in order for Judy. 21 An opportunity to sign ANCHORS was one of the privileges granted the student body. Here Betty Hun- toon lseatedl, Betty Miller, Dick McCullough, Nancy Sowden, and Jack Tilson inscribe their John Henry's along with remember when . . . As John Q. Studentbody, a Senior at South- port, stands looking out the east door of the new and gigantic fieldhouse, he sees a great phase of Southport's history. Standing in the midst of the new look and gazing at the old is a very strange feeling to John because he has been a part of both. As he stands there, deep in thought, John's entire high school career is reflected in his eyes, with an accent on its brevity. The thousand and one todays and tomorrows that were so real have been reduced to a handful of yesterdays to be filed away as memories. Graduation day, which once seemed remote, is now close at hand. So, now, as the rapidity of spring events fore- tells the coming graduation, John Q. Student- body stands gazing out the east door of the tieldhouse. He has been one of the first new look class, the first of many. COMMEN CEMENT - NOT AN END Many of the alumni attend Baccalaureate and Commencement services. Leedy first came to Perry Township as a teacher in 1921. Eight years later he came to Southport, then a school of about 340 pupils and 14 faculty members, as Vice-principal, ln 1939, Mr. Leedy became principal. Since that time, Southport has become a First Class Com- missioned High School and a member of the North Central Association largely through the efforts of Mr. Leedy and the faculty. What. Mr. Leedy likes best about our new building is the added space for each teachcnand, of course, the new gym. The new building enables Mr. Leedy to do bet- ter .over-all planning and to broaden the curricular offerings. When asked how he likes his position as principal at South- port, Mr. Leedy replied, This is my life and l thoroughly enjoy it. Admimktwztion and Fozcult Superintendent Due to the installation of a metropolitan school system in Perry Township, Dr. Edward E. Glenn was selected as the new superin- tendent of schools. Dr. Glenn, married and the father of one son, is well qualified for this most responsible position. Receiving his A.B. Degree at Qak- land City College in 1932, he later acquired his M.A. Degree in 1935, and his Doctor's De- gree in 1955 at Indiana University. ' Having served eight and one-half years as a high school principal and mathematics and science teacher and eleven years as Superin- tendent of Schools of Columbia City, Indiana, Dr. Glenn has found time in his busy sched- ule for many worth while organizations. ln- cludecl are the Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, the Chamber of Commerce, and many educa- tional panels and conferences. Dr. Glenn's outside interests include photo- graphy and travel. 26 Deans of Boys One of the most influential positions in a schooi is that of Dean of Boys. At Southport this office is filled by Mr. Walter Kellam and Mr Albert Theil. These men interview seniors relative to graduation, keep attendance rec- ords, and do general counseling. ln addition to guiding freshmen and sophomore boys, Mr. Theil sponsors the Student Council. Supervis- ing the junior and senior boys is Mr. Kellam. ln this, his twentieth year at Southport, Mr. Kellam also sponsored the Booster Club and the girls' cheer block, making it one of the best in the state. Mr, Kellam was on leave of absence during second semester because of I ness. Dean of Girls One of the most versatile individuals in the administration of Southport is Miss Blanche Penrod, Dean of Girls. Added responsibility was placed upon her this year with the in- creased enrollment and new surroundings. Miss Penrod acts as a bond between the girls who need aid and the administration. She is the sponsor of Medicii and Senior-ority. Be- ing chairman of the Easter Sunrise Service, the Christmas program, and the Thanksgiving program adds to Miss Penrod's duties. Vice-Principal As V-ice-Principal and Athletic Director, Mr. Ratlitf has many and varied duties to perform. His supervision includes making con- tracts for the man-Y athletic events. with the approval of the re- spective coaches. e also acts as host for the other schools using our new fieldhouse. Mr. Ratliff organizes the Lettermen, who have been of great assistance at our home games. As Vice-Principal and as adviscr to the junior and senior boys, he takes care of the at- tendance records and discipline cases. 27 FACULTY MARY BARR A. B.. As familiar strains of Pomp and Circurnstanceu echo through the gymnasium, the seniors of l959 proudly take their places in the many fields of opportunity, education, and business offered them. One More Step Size 8W, crossed ruby, exclaims Mrs. Miller, Junior Class sponsor to Secretary-Treasurer, Nancy Jo Dawson: she and President, Steve Fountain, en- gage in arranging of junior class rings. Assisting them is Vice-President, Tom Gilmore. Two of the many activities performed by the officers this year were the selling of class rings and the class party. The crowning event of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom which was held in our new gymnasium April 17. Largest Class The Sophomore class had the distinction of be- ing the largest class ever to enter Southport. With the assistance of Mrs. Eleanor Guyer, sponsor, they chose as their officers John Christoph, President, Ken Redeker, Vice-President, and Beth Witte, Sec- retary-treasurer. Included in their activities this year was making a float for the homecoming parade. The float por- trayed a triumphant Cardinal standing over a de- feated Bulldog. John Price served as the disc jockey at their class party held in March. Bill Vogel and his Beatniks and John Christoph's combo provided the entertainment. New Addition Representing the Freshman Class, were President Kenny Niermanp Vice-President, David Woerner, and Secretary-treasurer, Sharon Ford, greeting Mr. Brown, their sponsor, on their first day in high school. They have now made their first step into the realm of the Senior High. Good Morni11g, Southport High School New things here too! More phones, more teachers, and more students made the duties of the office girl a little more complicated than heretofore. In addition to doing general office tasks, these girls also assemble the ab- sentee lists, file papers, and do typing and duplicating for teachers and officials of the school. The only requisite for this post is one year of typing. All office work is done under the supervision of Mrs. Betty Stevens. Correction Tape, Anybody? 77 The teacher's girl Friday is a term that might be appropriately applied to the teachers' secretaries. These girls do everything from typing, duplicating, and stapling tests .to scoring papers, recording grades, and running errands. This year the secretaries were quite fortunate in that they were able to work in the new, better equipped office. All secretaries must have completed at least one year of typing and have maintained a C average. Most of them are commercial majors who wish to gain practical experience infrhis type of work. They are under the supervision of Mrs. Betty Stevens, school secretary. Eastern lndiana Marching Band Champions, First Di- vision Rating in the Indiana School of Music Association Marching Band contest, twelfth of ninety-one bands in the State Fair contest. These are only a small number of the contests and performances given by our band this year. The Marching Cardinals were directed by Bill Schmal- felft and led by a drum maiorette, six strutting majorettes and a flag corps of thirty girls. The band took part in all school functions and performed with Butler's band at the Hoosier Classics. They participated in the state Lions Club convention at South Bend, the Spring Festival, and marched at the opening of the Madison Avenue Expressway. The band was invited to appear at the Zionsville Festival and they were the official band at the Soap Box Derby in Indianapolis. They assisted the Pep Club in making a record which was sponsored by the P.-T. A. and to earn money for in- struments and supplies, the members sold candy. The majorettes twirled at half-time shows during Bas- ketball season and entered the distict and state solo and ensemble contests. In addition to the Choir, several small groups performed during the year. Among these were the Boy's Octet and the Girl's Sextet. Those in the octet were Steve Howard, Jim Unversaw, Garry Reed, John Winkler, Ross Caywood, Allan Cochran, Charles Cauble, and Tom Williams. Their accompanist was Betty Huntoon. Those in the sextet were Jean Wagner, Judy Darnell, Rhonda Taylor, Betty Huntoon, Judy Marshke, and Nancy Linkel. Their accompanist was Tom Williams. Who said that summertime meant vacation?l This thought occurred to many girls in Southport's new flag corps, the marching Cardinalettes. They were organized only last spring under the direction of Bill E. Schmalfeldt, head of the music department, and spent many hours during the summer in preparation for fall and winter school activities. B. Lyons, D. Spaulding, J. Darnell, M. Schooley, R. Jordan, J. The full orchestra is composed of special members of the concert band and the string section. This year, as last year, Mary Reinacker and Becky Harris served as our color guard. The girls, along with the majorettes, presented the flag at all home football and basketball games. 92 Singing Cardinals An organization Southport is proud to call its own is the choir. Southport's singing Cardinals work long and hard. Choir practice takes a full period every day and many rehearsals are scheduled after school hours. Mr, Schmalfeldt and the choir appear in many performances throughout the year, includ- ing convocations, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Bacca- laureate, and Commencement Services, and the Easter Sunrise Pageant. They also participate in the County Choral Festival and the State choir contest. The Choir brings honor to Southport by being the mother organization for several assorted vocal en- sembles and many entrants in the Solo and ensemble contest. lnterested underclassmen should take vocal music in one of the beginning classes or consult Mr. Schmalfeldt for advice. Check Mate The name of Royal Knights was given to Southport's new and improved Chess Club, which is devoted to promoting interest in the game and promises to take on all challengers, There was a tournament which was drawing to a close as the Anchor went to press, but the results were not available. The Chess Club looks forward to the time when it will have equipment and facilities to play against other schools and bring the game of chess into greater prominence. This vear's officers were: Randy Galvin, President, Steve Howard, Vice- Presidenty and Stuart Ernhart, Secretary- Treasurer. Sprocket Iockeys The Sprocket Jockeys' Club, which is made up of boys and girls who run the motion pic- ture proiectors, became part of the new look when they were presented with a room of their own in which they could show their films to the classes. These films are informative and help to illustrate problems which might otherwise be difficult to explain. The club also has a new sponsor, Mr. Ralph Brown. The '59 Sprocket Jockevs' is run by Presi- dent David Kafader, and the club's other of- ficers, Klaus Heise, Vice-President, and Caro- lyn Reeves, Secretary-Treasurer. Sink or Swim! The new look was further enhanced by the new swimming pool which provides many hours of pleasure and relaxation for the girls' synchronized swimming team, newly organized this year. The girls call themselves the South- port Dolphinetts. Each Tuesday night strange sounds echoed from the general direction of the swimming pool-- Ready, Kip, tub, swish, shark! Inside one might have seen the members of the team in swimming formation ready to begin their routine. Officers for 1959 were: Presi- dent, Joan Peay, Vice-President, Jane Tegeler, Secretary, June Krug, and Treasurer, Jane Lohman. Working under the leadership and direction of Miss Barbara Burris, they make the club both interesting and educational. This cheer section was one of the most highly or- ganized of its kind in the state. ln addition to the red and white reversible Capes and red and white gloves, the girls had many new songs and chants which added greatly to the color and excitement of the games. Mr. Kellam has been the sponsor of the pep club in the past, however, Mr. Schrnalfeldt took over the second semester. lOO Braden's Raiders Braden's Raiders was a popular organiza- tion at S.H.S. this year. ln their white ivy league hats and red sweat shirts, the boys were present to back ourrteam at all home games, the County Tourney, the Sectional, and the Regional. Backed by hard work and much practice, the boys demonstrated, for all to see, that school spirit extended beyond the fair sex. Their clever maneuvers included rising rev- erently, with their hats held over their hearts for every Cardinal free throw. The new club was under the direction of Jack Morgan, sponsor, and seniors Dick Mc- Cullough, Jon Hittle, and Ray Kappmeyer. Morris Epler, Senior, recently received a good sportsmanship award for his outstanding playing ability and mental attitude in the County Tourney. This award was given by the West Side Exchange Club of lndianapolis. Through the season, Morrle has proven to be an outstanding player on the hardwood. Here is a look at the coaching staff of Southport's l958 South Central Conference and Marion County Football Champs. Standing are: Dave Bertram, Dick Schrier, and Head Coach, Jack Morgan. Seated is William Fredenberger. Gridiron Champs Our football team finished with an overall record of eight wins and two losses this year, capturing the County and the South Central Conference championships. Their success lay in an unusually well-balanced attack. This was evidenced by Southport's placing five players -Joe Beal, Tom Brewer, Chuck Wetzel, Bob Ashman, and Bob Seidner-on the all-confer- ence team. Beal, Brewer, and Wetzel also made all-county. An additional honor was given this year at Southport. Line and back- field man-of-the-year trophies were awarded to Beal and Brewer, respectively. Bob Seidner broke the South Central Conference record for yards gained per carry. He averaged 8.2 yards. SOUTHPORTS GRIDIRON GREATS Morgan's Grid lron from left to right! lst row-B. Gettle, J. Receiving the trophy from Mr. Shyrl Craig lcenterl are Mr. Morgan fright? and Mr. C. C. Leedy, Principal. The loss of Southport's baseball and as- sistant football coach, Mr. William Freden- berger, saddened not only the hearts of students, but faculty alike, we will re- member the many games he coached and good advice he imparted to all. Having taught physical education, health, and safety at Southport for eleven years, he became our track coach in 1955 and baseball coach in l957. Spring in- tramurals always found him, baseball in one hand and glove in the other, teaching someone iust how to pitch that ball or how to grip that bat. All this and much more will keep alive the memory of Mr. Fredenberger, an all-round coach. lO5 Got the Coach Carl Blackie Braden, just about the best round- ball helrnsman around, says a few choice words to the referee, no doubt inviting him to dinner! Roundball, The Season Southport's Hardwood Hustlers racked up a fine season marked by upsets over defend- ing State Champs, Fort Wayne South, lndi- anapolis Tech, Rushville, and finally by two defeats over a tough Manual team that was ranked sixth in the state. Although most un- successful in conference play, Braden juggled the redbird lineup and entered a team in the county tourney that was second to none by actual test. Southport's defeating Ben Davis served as a grim fore-shadowing to Manual ot things to come, for earlier in the season Ben Davis had battled Manual to a double over- time and sudden death situation before suc- cumbing. The south side rivalry of blood reached a peak when a sell-out crowd saw the High-flying Cards humble Manual 55-51 and shake up its sectional hopes considerably. South- port's co-favored Cardinals came through the early and rather anti-climactic rounds on a wave of anticipation of the rematch with Manual. The Redskins, lucky in the draw, and having had an equally easy time with preliminary foes, were primed and ready. The final game was a hair-raising, see-saw, overtime battle which had a crowd of 7,500 people on its feet and scream- ing. With the scoreboard clock showing two seconds, and the score tied 4l-4l, Dan Woerner, a late season addition to the starting line-up, calmly canned a pair of charity tosses to give Southport a lead which a fruitless Redskin desperation shot could have erased but did not. Southport then journeyed to the lndi- anapolis Regionals where they coupled rugged rebound- ing and a .490 shooting percentage to whip an im- proved Brownsburg team. Given the opportunity to ap- pear in the finals against heavily favored Crispus At- tucks, they came onto the floor inspired, and led at the quarter rest l2-lO. lt soon became evident, how- ever, that the weary Cards were no match for the towering Tigers from Indianapolis. When the gun sounded, the careers of six Cardinals ended, but not before they had carried Southport's banner to the final 32 teams in the state. l Here in the new dressing roorn, Steve Briner and Bill Amt carry out one of their many duties as man- agers. Don Pugh is their victim lying on the table. These two managers were the backbone of this year's basketball team. lO9 With visions of varsity stardom the Freshman Bas- ketball team has proved well its ability on the hard- wood. Tennis is enjoying a growth of popularity throughout the county and the Conference. Southport is no exception to this expansion, for tennis will soon become a letter sport. The team participated in the S.C.C. tournament in both the singles and doubles competition, add- ing valuable points toward the All-'Sports Trophy. They also scheduled many dual meets in both the spring and tall. The members of the team were Row iz Jon Hittle, Lloyd Tucker, and Dan Woerner, Row 2: Don Williams, Bill Wasson, Coach Swank, Monty Siekerman, and Randy Galvin. Golf Last fall, Southport's men of the links spent many long hours pursuing the pills around the golf course. They participated in the South Central Conference and Marion County meets, and, aided by two returning lettermen, made excellent showings on both outings. When the Anchor went to press, Coach Krause's Cardinals had a successful season behind them and were looking forward to an even better spring renewal. The team was composed of, left to right, Coach Krause, Jess Hunt, John Vance, Pete deHebreard, Chris Kleinhenz, Steve Simon, Rob- ert Elkins, Ronald Windsor, and Don Linson. ll6 ' Intramurals The l959 intramural, champions in the Junior-Senior league were the Swamp Stompers. The Freshman-Sopho- more champs were a team known as the P.T.P.P. Sports- manship trophies were presented to Jim Wilson, senior, and Don Stick Miller, sophomore, for sportsmanlike conduct and attitude. The championship games were played in true Hoosier Hardwood fashion, with timers, score keepers, well qualified faculty referees, and a presentation ceremony immediately following the games. The intramural progam, under the able leadership of Mr. Jack Morgan, becomes more popular every year. Shown above are the intramural captains. Zero Zero Service The boys were not the only ones to take advantage of the new gym this year. There were twenty girls' volleyball teams organized this season, compared with only eleven of last year. Along with the new teams, there were new rules this season. The most important was that a girl may not hit the ball more than once in an assist. The captains were chosen from the senior girls, with the juniors as co-captains. Before the annual tournament started, each team had two practice games. The awards were presented to the winning team at the May Dance. l'l7 Planning a New Home Remodeling Ki1lCh611 C3bil16tS Hotpoint Appliances . . . rving marion and surrounding counlies wifh quality materials since 1930 Nu 7000 South, just off Madison Ave. , da via'son's A SOUTHPORT L U M B E R C 0. 51 phone ST 4- 24 5 1 Thrifty Corner '6Save Time and Money High Octane Regular--10071 Ethel 5500 So.
