This is our life as Seniors . . . enioying our class party, choosing our invitations, selecting our caps and gowns, and electing our class officers. At baccalaureate and graduation we come to the realization that this is the last time we will be together as a class. With mixed emotions, we look back remem- bering our feelings of insecurity as Sophomores, of as- surance as Juniors, and the finality of it all as Seniors, and look ahead wondering as we end this chapter of our life at Southport High School and begin another with all the varied anticipations of the future. VALEDICTORIAN One of the high honors bestowed upon any senior was claimed this year by Louise Manny, valedictorian, class of l958. Lou, as she is known to her friends, acquired this high honor as a result of having achieved the highest scholastic average over a seven semester period. She was also rated very high in personality and activities. The faculty and student body chose her as the student to receive the DAR. Good Citizen Award for 1958. Before coming to Southport, Lou spent two years at Charlotte, North Carolina, where she received high honors in addition to those achieved here. Thi! if our lzfe 1-. HONIONS IN THE STEW In dramatics, to be wished good luck is bad luck for an actor. Instead, the Senior Play co-sponsors, Mr. Thomas Brethauer and Miss Sue Burris told the cast, Don't break a leg. This seemed to work because this was one of the most successful plays ever presented at Southport. Where hearts were high and fortunes low, and- ONIONS IN THE STEW describes the island life of the Mac- Donald family, where everything seems to backfire. Betty MacDonald is faced with some unusual and uproarious com- plications in this life along with the problems of two boy- crazy, teen-age daughters, They are at the painful stage where they put on lipstick to gather driftwood and are always coming up with mysterious ailments to avoid their homework-such as non-focusing eyes, or aching toenails. To them the dating problem on an island is the most disastrous ever. Their gloom makes life even more miserable for their mother, yet in the midst of the humorous difficulties and despair, the family finds a special value in the life they created-one they would not trade for anything in the world. lO Barbara Dennerline Monty Siekerrnan ..
