Lite is but a book, events are only pages, and years are only chapters. Here we shall attempt to establish a permanent record of three ot the most important years of our lite as students of Southport. Between these covers we shall turn back the chap- ters ot life and the pages of experience. The people who guided and instructed us in the events of learning will be remembered here. Those many happenings which in- fluenced our thoughts and decisions will not be for- gotten, and the activities which helped to develop our social attitudes and ideas are here for reminiscing. Yes, we the seniors of Southport wish to place this book as a lasting momento of . . . THIS IS OUR LIFE. .- as m Q. As Mr. George, Perry Township Trustee, looks over the plans for the finished gym, we ask the question, will we be the first Senior class to be graduated from the new building? The new gym, when completed, will ac- commodate 8,5OO and will have facilities for swimming, basketball, track, and classrooms for shop and music. Between ll:l5 and l2:45, the busiest place at Southport is the cafeteria. Covering the first floor of the new wing, the new cafeteria and kitchen provide us not only with good food, but also a pleasant, cheery, atmosphere. Two lines and a staggered lunch schedule permit almost l,OOO students and our faculty to be served efficiently and quickly. Anewevzofliifin Appearing in the picture to the left are Mr. C. C. Leedy and Mr, Francis Schuster at the dedication of the new gymnasium, which is to become a part of Southport High School in the very near future. As Sophomores we looked forward to joining clubs, going to soc-hops, and attending the many special eventsg among them, the dances, the sports contests, and most important of all, our annual class party, which was held in March. Now as our Sophomore year draws to a close, we anticipate our Junior and Senior years with eagerness and confidence. lUpperl The beginning typing classes learn the basic rules of typing and put these rules into practice as they would in any office. tLowerl Vent, vidi, vici, quote the students of the Latin classes. fl came, l saw, I conquered.J Mrs. Majors is the teacher of all the Latin students. This course in- cludes the study ol leaves and in- sects, and dissecting of worms, frogs, and grasshoppers. The teachers of this course are Miss Blanche Penrod and Mr. Chauncey McDaniel, The Sophomore party was held in the gym on March seventh this year. Mrs. Guyer, our sponsor, se- lected the following committee chairmen: Invitation, Melinda Polfenbargerg Decorations, Nancy Brier, Entertainment, C l a u d i a Kidd, Refreshments, Pat Wall, and Cleansup, Dan VVoerner. The class chose Summer In Bermuda as lhe theme. For the past three years this gala event has taken place at the Indiana University Medical Center with Ralph Lillard and his orchestra furnishing the music. KDRUMBEATSM Erie shadows, floating hands, and shrill screams created the weird atmosphere for the three act Junior Play, Drumbeats by Howard Reed. A half-ruined mansion on a desolate stretch of swamps houses the mysterious comedy when a rich old man suddenly disappears and a mon- ster, an apparition, and a black hand start the family and a strange doctor in search of a magic stone. . At baccalaureate and graduation we come to the realization that this is the last time we will be together as a class. With mixed emotions, we look back remem- bering our feelings of insecurity as Sophomores, of as- surance as Juniors, and the finality of it all as Seniors, and look ahead wondering as we end this chapter of our life at Southport High School and begin another with all the varied anticipations of the future. VALEDICTORIAN One of the high honors bestowed upon any senior was claimed this year by Louise Manny, valedictorian, class of l958. Lou, as she is known to her friends, acquired this high honor as a result of having achieved the highest scholastic average over a seven semester period. She was also rated very high in personality and activities. The faculty and student body chose her as the student to receive the DAR. Good Citizen Award for 1958. Before coming to Southport, Lou spent two years at Charlotte, North Carolina, where she received high honors in addition to those achieved here. Thi! if our lzfe 1-. HONIONS IN THE STEW In dramatics, to be wished good luck is bad luck for an actor. Instead, the Senior Play co-sponsors, Mr. Thomas Brethauer and Miss Sue Burris told the cast, Don't break a leg. This seemed to work because this was one of the most successful plays ever presented at Southport. Where hearts were high and fortunes low, and- ONIONS IN THE STEW describes the island life of the Mac- Donald family, where everything seems to backfire. Betty MacDonald is faced with some unusual and uproarious com- plications in this life along with the problems of two boy- crazy, teen-age daughters, They are at the painful stage where they put on lipstick to gather driftwood and are always coming up with mysterious ailments to avoid their homework-such as non-focusing eyes, or aching toenails. To them the dating problem on an island is the most disastrous ever. Their gloom makes life even more miserable for their mother, yet in the midst of the humorous difficulties and despair, the family finds a special value in the life they created-one they would not trade for anything in the world. lO Barbara Dennerline Monty Siekerrnan .. Tape recordings of the two winning speeches will be sent to the state contest. Shown here is Dr George Arndt, sponsor, pre- senting the awards to John Price, in first place, and Ed Folkening, the runner-up in the contest. A B Cs of Sewing was the theme for the fashion show this year, Through the courtesy of Mrs. Marjorie Smith and three of her Home Economics sewing classes the girls of Southport and their mothers were treated to a preview of year-round fashions, The past four years have been filled with en! joyment and satisfaction for these six talented girls. They are known throughout the area of Central lndlana as the Novelnotes. The group was organized in their freshman year under the direction of Mr. Schrnalfeldt. They soon lmegan singing for school dances, church or- oanizations, radio and television programs, and many other outside activities Recently the girls have had special arrangements of popular hits made especially for them, one of which gave them their third first in the state contest. I L c . Jo 'Wk -ui OUR PRIN CIP L ln the last twenty years as principal of Southport High School Mr. C. C. Leedy has observed many changes and improvements. One of the greatest of these is the remarkable growth in population of Perry Township which has ne- cessitated a continuous building program to keep pace with our every growing needs in schools. As a conse- quence we have met that need by erecting some of the finest school faciilties in this area of the State of ln- diana. lncluded in these facilities are not only many new schools but Roosevelt Stadium and the new gym with a swimming pool. Another of his major accomplishments was secur- ing our admittance to the North Central Association. Always interested in the progress in the school and the betterment of the pupils is our principal . . . Mr. Leedy. GIRLS' DE BOYS' DEANS There is one very outstanding person, Miss Blanche Penrod, the Dean of Girls, who could not be left out of the memories of the students of Southport. Her chief duty as dean is counseling with the girls who need advice. She has helped many a girl over one of the great stepping stones during their scholastic life at S. H. S. Miss Penrod is very understanding and admired by all who come in contact with her at school. She is a very busy person around the school spon- soring the Medicii, Senior-ority, and the Sprocket Jockeys. She is also general chairman for the Christmas program and the Easter Sunrise Service. 22 Mr. Walter Kellam, a soft-spoken but enthusi- astic Dean of Boys, is a well-known man at S. H. S. He is well-fitted for his work as counselor of the boys and chairman of the Senior Guidance Committee. As chairman, he interviews students relative to their school work and eligibility for graduation. He heads our Girl's Pep Club, which has been recognized throughout the state and nation in the Teen Magazine. Mr. Roger Ratliff, our other Dean of Boys, has also become a familiar figure around the school in these past two years at Southport. Among his duties are taking care of attendance, counseling, and disciplining students. Mr. Ratliff heads the Boys' Cheer Block, which was originated last year. Everyone will agree that these two men have performed their duties excellently. -4' ALICE W. BLACK A. B. LIFE O THE CINDERS Morgan's Men, as the track team is commonly known, are always striving to eliminate time. Track is one sport where every second really counts. Track is considered by many to be the most difficult high school sport because it requires rigid training and unlimited effort. Every spring several boys can be seen trotting around the block, pacing down the streets, and racing around the track in an all-out effort to be in shape for the dual meets and the possibility of ob- taining glory in the conference or the county. Our i957-58 team completed the season with a three and three record, as well as gaining second place in the county and third in the South Central Conference. Regional qualifiers were Jim Hoffmeyer, Frank Williams, and Kenny Simon in the high hurdles, the l0O yard dash, and the 880 respectively. HO ORS One of the events of the annual May Dance at Southport is the distributing ot athletic awards. Shown here are Thornton Perkins, Bill Brittan, and Verne Ratlift receiving their awards. A lot of ability and hard work during practice are attributes of a successful athlete regardless of the sport. The letter given to Thornton Perkins was for his ability on the gridiron. One of our hurdle stars is Verne Ratlift. Reward for his accomplishments and ability to jump is the letter which was given to him for his efforts, Bill Brittan was another of our boys honored at the athletic dance. Bill walked away with a certificate for his achievements in both track and football. LIFE O THE GREE Golf, a relatively new sport at Southport, has been a part of the sports program for the past three years. Don Linson, Steve Daily, Chis Kleinhenz, Bob Elkins, Pete DeHebreard, Jessie l-lunt, and John Vance lnot pictured? are the boys who competed in the County and Conference tourneys last tall and form the basis of the team for the season this spring. The team con- tended against county and city as well as conference teams. 90 I TRAMURALS Almost every member of the G,A.A. par- ticipates in the intramural volleyball pro- gram each year. This program, sponsored by Lucille Miller, is designed to give the girls of Southport a chance at a competitive sport. The volleyball program consists of I2 teams with l2 members each. The cap- tains of the teams are chosen from the ad- vanced gym class members. A play-oft tournament is begun after the teams have been challenged to several practice games. The teams then go to a winning or losing bracket. As teams are eliminated, the tournament draws to a close with the winner of the winning bracket playing the winner of the losing bracket for the championship game. The players ot the victorious team are awarded medals. The captains for this year's team appear in this picture. The championship team of the volleyball season was coached by Lou Manny, We hear a whistle blow and the sound of play ball and another intramural bas- ketball game begins. This program, which is quite popular among sophomore, iunior, and senior boys, is sponsored by Jack Morgan for all boys not participating in winter sports. The basketball games are played in the school gym on week-day nights and after school. When the intramural season begins in December, the boys choose their own teams and at the games the coaching and retereeing is also done by the boys themselves. A play-oft tournament is be- gun atter each team has had a chance at several practice games. A total of 6 games are played during a full season. Each mem- ber ot the champion team of the tournament is awarded a trophy. A sportsmanship trophy is also given to the outstanding player se- lected by all the intramural players. The captains ot all the teams participating are pictured. This year's championship team was The No-Name Nine coached by senior, Jim Owens. Ed Marien was awarded this year's sportsmanship trophy.
