JJ Pmzfe Thee Eve More When seniors take a final look at Southport High School as students, three years which appeared to be so long day by day are suddenly com- pleted, our hearts lift up in singing, Praise Thee Ever More, and our minds recall the hits of the past years. Now, we can recall a faint chant of I Walk Alone, to remind us of the confusion of our first experience as sophomores at Southport High, then the beat became more steady and as juniors we saw ourselves more confident of success. As seniors, we reminisce over the many hits made at Southport - the Senior Play, the excitement of the laurels won in the field of sports, the study before exams, and the anticipation of the Prom. Forever we will know that Memories Are Made Of This. ity of 1957 A popular sextet which received first place in the district and state contests consists of Darlene Jackson, Sondra Turner, Peggy Cow- den, Pat Shay, Marilyn Kottkamp, Karen l-lasz, and Kathy Nichols, accompanist, Pat Shay,K however, was replaced by Cindy Orme. Something of ote Edwin Penn has become known to many for his special talent. While a student at Southport, he has received many awards in the field of music. Last spring, he achieved first place in the Concerto Contest of the indiana Federation of Music Clubs. ln the fall, he participated in a state-wide piano contest sponsored by the Indianapolis Sym- phony Orchestra. Chosen one of the finalists, he appeared on television and was awarded second place in a very close decision. He has also received first place In many other con- tests durlng the last few years. Ed is studying to become a concert pianist. Last summer he attended the Aspen Music School in Aspen, Colorado. The finest musi- cians in the country assemble here every summer to study and teach. Ed was fortunate enough to be one of the selected pupils of Madame Rosinna Lhevlnne, the world's fore- most instructor of piano. Presently he is studying with Sidney Foster, widely known concert pianist and professor at Indiana Unl- verslty. Upon graduation this year, Ed plans to go to New York to further his study in music at the Juilliard School of Music. 4 Mental T e reatest Thmg Nancy Schloemer achieved the highest honor bestowed on any senior when she was chosen viledictoriin of her class for her outstandnnq scholastic record over 1 seven semester period Nancy not only was the highest ranking senior scholastically b t also rated high n personality and leadership ability Her sublect wus A Stepping Stone Toward The Future The Senior Class of i957 will onq remember Nancy und will be encouraged by her inspiring speech The student body of Southport High School chose Nancy to represent the school on a tour of the United Nations ID New York City She was sponsored by the Student Council She vis ited the United Nations and New York City with a group of representative students from all parts of Indiana This was an entoyable and memorable experience LX -fic saw The Honor f The Year John Carmen Llnson l956 graduate of Southport High School who was second in his class is the fi t and only student from Southport ever to attain a Na tional Honor Society Scholarship John known to all a Jack competed with over twelve thousand senior Na tional Honor Society tudents from all over the United States Only three oth r students from Indiana have ever been so honored as to receive one of these schol- arships. Sally Foster, a young teen-age girl, had no trouble with her high school studies, but boys, well, that was a different matter, Ginger tried to help her with a few brainstorms while Mr. and Mrs. Foster had to endure her ideas, Mrs. Foster's sister and her good-looking daughter from the South came for a visit and didn't help matters at all. To add to the confusion was Mr, Foster's prize cow, Beulah, and the Foster's maid, Beulah. lt all came to a head when Sally won a voice contest over the daughter of her father's employer and to a conventional happy ending as the problems were solved one by one. The rapid staccato sounds of keys of the typewriters which emerge from room six fore- tell that another deadline of the Perry News must be met. Because of the high quality of the Perry News, the paper was given a distribution ot the ROTO, a newspaper supplement published by the National Scholastic Press Association, Any sophomore or iunior with a B average in English may take journalism. A staff position is possible but unlikely with a C+ average in Beginning Journalism. At the printers the stories are typed on metal with a Iinotype machine. Each line is separately typed and place in the correct position. After this process the stories are then transferred to dummy sheets, which are then returned to the school. In the journalism classes the mistakes are corrected, and the sheets are forwarded to the printer so that they can be corrected on the machine. The duplicate set of dummy sheets is cut and placed on layout sheets which provide the editors with a general idea of the finished paper. The stories, having been sent to the printer, are placed in a layout pattern as they will appear in the paper. Gordon received the Dr. Harry Meyer trophy given for outstanding feats in athletics. Winning one out of three dual meets the Cardinals were loaded with seniors. There are no returning Iettermen this year. Highlighting th l956 track season were the County and Conference meets. The running Cards placed third as a team in both. Three years ago a group of seniors came up with The idea of form- ing a small band to boost the spirit and morale of our team at games away from home. The Pep Club also presents a colorful picture with its many formations and hand movements. It has become almost as renowned as our Team for its abundance of school spirit and loyalty. During The Sectionals This year, an added attraction was originated. The boys of Southport, not wanting to be surpassed or outdone, or- ganized their own cheer block, Their attire consisted of white T-shirts with red decorations lt proved To be a most favorable development, since The boys were very able supporters. Her secretary, Kathy Pavey, appears with her in the picture. it -5 . , , if l., Dean of Boys One of the familiar sights around Southport High School is thc friendly face of Walter Kellam, one of our Deans of Boys, Mr, Kellam is so well-known around S,H.S. that most of the students do not realize the many duties and responsibilities that lic upon his shoulders, His main duty is the guidance of the pupils through their sophomore, junior and senior years at Southport as well as being Chairman of the Senior Guidance Committee, ln this capacity, he interviews students relative to school work and discusses eligibility for graduation. ln addition to these duties he sponsors the Booster Club, which has produced one of the best Pep Clubs in Indiana. A new face around Southport this year is that of Mr. Roger Ratliff, who comes to us from Linton, indiana. of seniors Many of the duties formerly discharged by Mr, Kellam have been assumed by Mr. Ratliff, such as taking care of attendance, planning programs for sophomores, counseling, and disci- plining students. Although Mr. Ratliff has these many obligations, he also was Chairman of the annual Thanksgiving Program. Mr. Ratliff has performed his duties well during the past year, R FACULTY CARL BRADEN B. S.
