MX .,: -15155 I 4- Hgwlg? ,Lg-wil' THE 1952 SOUTHPORT HIGII SCHOOL INDIANAPOLIS - INDIANA THIS IS THE LIFE ..... AT This is the lite unfolded in pictures and brief resumes that we have experienced during the past four years. Thus in this l952 Anchor, we have depicted the triumphs, the defeats .... the trials .... the achievements . . . . the sports. . . . the activities . . . . the associations . . . the memories .... that have endeared us to our school. l 4 5 Q In these memoirs and pictures ' I J l we have briefly catalogued the events that have stood upper- most in our minds at Southport High School. SOUTHPORT HIGH SCHOOL Dove Hovilond, president of the junior closs, crowns Joon Eberhort-'51, queen of the Junior-Senior Prom. Moking up the queen's court ore Sue Orme, Jone Nelson, Morgie Christie, ond Joon Miller. When We G0 Formal Mr. Leedy, with the help of Morgie Christie, president of the G.A.A., issues the out- stonding othletic owords for eoch sport ot the Moy Donce. At Our Last Dance The Girls Athletic Association sponsors the majority of the school dances of the year. The first is the Sweater Swirl in which the football awards are given and Mr. and Miss Scrimmage are crowned king and queen of the football season. ln March all of the Irish come out for the St. Pat's Jig. Basketball, track, baseball, and wrestling awards are given at the formal, G.A.A. spring dance in May which is the last dance of the year. During Our Working Hours Hard at work are these students in the advanced typing class. These girls are learning short-cuts in office work and are pre- paring themselves for fu- ture secretarial positions. Carol Jackson, sopho- more, shows Miss Pen- rod, head of the Biology Department, the proof of her skill as a bug hunter. Deep concentration is required on the part of these students in Mr. Ray Linson's mechanical drawing class. Our Most Traveled Scout One of our seniors, Jack Whalen, attended the Boy Scout Jubilee at ' Bad-lschl, Austria. During his trip he saw various countries such as Algeria, ltaly, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. He has graciously shared his experiences with the other stu- dents by showing slide films to sev- eral clubs. Our Deans During our life at Southport High School, we have come to recognize Miss Penrod and Mr. Kellam with increasing esteem. They bridge the gap between the student body and the administration and they are always willing to assist the students with their problems whether they are personal or scholastic. We feel that Miss Penrod is outstanding in her field since she is an executive board member of the eleventh district and chairman of the Central Division of Indiana State Teachers Association. She is also the second vice-president of the Indiana Classroom Teachers Association. fi Oh, How We Danced Dancing on the stage at the lunch periods was enjoyed by many students throughout the year. Our l952 Prom, given by the Junior Class in honor of the Seniors, was held at the Marott Hotel in the lovely Marble Ballroom. At the left are super-salesmen Jo Kelly and Harry Beck. These hard workers were the winners of the mag- azine drive. Due to the combined ef- forts of all the students, the Magazine Drive this year went over the quota. The Voice Uf The Students The student organization is corn- posed of the class presidents and a representative from each home room. To be elected as the home room rep- resentative the student must be above average in scholarship, and, be able to speak before groups without em- barrassment and preparation. His previous citizenship record must also be satisfactory. This body is a service organization and conducts such worth-while activ- ities as the magazine drive and the Community Chest Drive. This group also works for better civic conditions within the school such as conduct at convocations and during Pep sessions. Mr. Leedy is the Sponsor with Carl Lasiter as President, David HaviIand,, vice-president, and Sandra Brown, Secretary-Treasurer. N In Uur Lighter Moments Meowl Dudley Milley as Davy torments his girlfriend Maudie, played by Jo Ann Elsea in the senior play, Men Are Like Street Cars. Older sister Sylvia, lMarilyn Hohn? and her beau Jerry, lBennie Wise, look on with amuse- ment. PORT A D ACTI ITIE Sports are an integral part ot Lite at Southport High School. In this action shot Jim Baker is mak- ing a basket for the Cardinals. A scene from last year's operetta, Pirates of Penzance, shows the dramatic talent. Shirley Reed and Glen Hager played the leading roles in the operetta. Behind The Scenes Behind the scenes at senior play re- hearsal can be seen many interesting incidents. Here .loan Miller, Jane Nelson and Pat Turner seem very intent on getting that much needed after-school snack. Nancy Kortepeter and Bennie Wise look on with amusement. Mrs. Kathleen Ritchie, director of the junior play, Cheaper by the Dozen, coaches Jack W h a I e n, Patty Kriner, and Sue Dyer in their roles as Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gilbreth and daughter. Anne. This play was a story of the Gilbreths X. is ' and their twelve children who were all under the in- fluence of their vefficiency expert father. Our Valedictorian Carolyn Nierman was chosen as this year's class valedictorian because of her high scholastic ranking for the four years of school. Carolyn ranks first in a class of l5O students. Here with Mr. Leedy she receives her diploma. WHEN WE BECAME PROUD SENIORSI When we received our caps and gowns we realized that we have finally become proud seniors. We know that some will go on to college to further their educationg while others will go into service or into work in diversified fields. We reflect with a little sadness in our hearts as we march to the music of Pomp and Circumstancef' that this is the last time we will be together as a class. Four years of association with one another has made an indelible impression upon us. The religious highlight of the school year is the beau- tiful and moving Easter Sunrise Service. Marilyn Hohn has portrayed the angel for the past four years. Uur Life During The Holiday Seasons One of the most beautiful scenes of the Community during the holiday season is the Christmas decorations around the high school. Recordings of Christmas carols and stories were played in the evenings for the enjoy- ment of all. 'FA ,I X. AND THEN THERE WAS THE EXCHANGE STUDENT l liked Southport from the first minute and quickly got acquainted with everyone. I think I couIdn't have come to a better school. Everything was entirely different for me and I had to learn many new things, but the kids were real friendly with me. l think clubs at school, convocations, and even pep sessions are good things. ln the long run, l think all school activities make school life more interest- ing and more enjoyable to the students. lt is a wonderful thing that the school is not only an institution for mere mental instruction and education, but a place which has to offer much more. Mrs. Betty Stevens is the very capable secretary ot the school She can be found almost every period directing the affairs in the office Better Late Than N ever Newcomers to Southport High School this year were: Freshmen: Martha Burpo, Nina West, Bobby Parker, Margaret Gasper, John Kelly, Gracie Mooney, and Pat Brown. Sophomores are: James Harrison, Josephine Mozee, Helen Townsend, Roberta Anderson, Da- vid Guilkey, Earline Tucker, Carol Webster, Mary Noah, Rosella Nel- son, Gladys Cline, and Charles Steinhauer. Juniors are Jo Ann Tarter, Joan Hoagland, and Betty Lee. Betty Harris returned to the Senior class. Some of these students are pic- tured at the right. l if ,W .gm ,Xi A Q .fn iw N ADMI I TRATIO Our life also includes the life of the faculty. Through their untiring years of service and the execution of their many duties they have become greatly devoted to our will. They guided us as freshmen and now acknowledge our farewells with words of wisdom and encouragement. The senior class gratefully thanks this faculty, those present and absent, for its years of education which will always prove invaluable. Mr. C. Calvin Leedy, Principal of Southport High School. Administrates Our School As the principal and progressive leader of Southport, prin- cipal C. Calvin Leedy forms a strong bond between administra- tion and the student body. Administrative duties draw heavily on his time and energy but he is never too busy to have a private conference with some student or to attend any activity of the school. Being a man who achieves, he has helped uh to achieve and to remain a member of the North Central Association. OUR TRUSTEE Under the progressive admin- istration of Nelson P. Swift, Trustee of Perry Township, South- port is erecting the much needed Junior High School. He is build- ing the school so that more rooms may be added to this proj- ect A which contains twenty- one classrooms and a cafeteria capable of feeding four hundred at one time, This building will be ready for occupancy by Septem- ber l953. When the final 52,000,000 project is completed in perhaps six to eight years, there will be four buildings, a classroom build- ing, cafeteria, a windowless au- dio-visual education building, and the gym. With foresight and unfaltering devotion the conscientious Mr. Swift has directed the school along a road of growth and achievement as manifested by this expansion plan. One can gain membership into this club by giving a platform per- formance before the club members. The officers for this year were: Bob Cameron, President, Bob Theil, Vice-President, Joan Miller, Secretary, Margie Davis, Treasurer, and Mike Sweeney, Program Chairman. Shown in the library are some members of the Library Club. Girlsi Organizations One of the largest organizations in the school for girls is the Senior-ority. Underclassmen girls look forward to the time when they will be eligible for membership and may take part in the interesting meetings. Senior-ority officers are shown here as they appeared at one of the meetings, A group of teachers' secretaries are shown here as they go about some of their duties. The secretaries' chief occupations are to run errands for the teachers, type tests, and run off stencils. The 66Fritz Kreislersv At Work Under Mr. Warble's directorship there were many activities in which the string ensemble participated that make us very proud of them. A few of these include programs for the P.T.A. and during the intermissions at class plays. Best Foot Forward Exciting were the lives of the snappy, high-stepping majorettes , , . the tricky routines . . . the frozen hands and legs at football games . . . the hard practice during fifth period . . . how they bravely twirled despite the players who refused to leave the floor . . . the frightening nervousness before contests and the extreme relief when they were over . . . yes, how proud we were of our maiorettes. Members of the ensemble were Carolyn Critchlow, Jody Haines, Margie Christie, Joyce Van Demon, Shirley Calawav, and Gayle Walters. There was always such a military look about the color guard as they proudly carried the flags at football games . . . the silence as the flag was brought into view and the National Anthem was played . . . the struggle with the uniforms , . . and the way they made each formation complete. Members of the color guard were Phyllis Martlidge, Gloria l-lill, Linda Riley, June Vander Mulcn, Dorothy Guthrey, and Claris Sutton. Life Uf The Faithful Tooters The band was always loyal as it played at ball games and pep sessions under direction of Mr. Warble. Remember the practice during fifth period every day . . . the rush to put instruments away before the bell . . . the attempt to follow information at ball games . . . the problem of beating time . . . the hot, stiff uniforms . . . the dreaded solo and ensemble con- tests . . . the hard work and the long practices before concerts? We will never forget our conscientious band. Seniors leaving the band are Joe Hawthorne, Herbert Korra, Shirley Marschke, James Fritz, Frank Gates, and Ralph Robertson. Our Melody Makers ORCHESTRA The orchestra practiced diligently . . . playing during intermissions for class plays and operettas . . . worrying with formal skirts while trying to play . . . practicing the last, long hour sixth period before the final bell . . . running over the scale until it nearly drove them crazy . . . and how faithful both the band and orchestra were as they successfully provided music for all types of occasions. Farewell adieu to seniors Herbert Korra, Joe Hawthorne, Shirley Marschke, Frank Gates, and Ralph Robertson. , . 1 I Our Songbirds That Sang Us To Victory! There were no sour notes for these eighteen pupils. They are Carol Jackson, Joann Marksbury, Mildred Ackerman, Joyce Ulrey, Nancy Webb, Molly Robinson, Shirley Reed, Shirley Calaway, Jody Haines, Margie Christie, Marvin Chilton, Evelyn Carpenter, Mary Lou Trotter. Music Winners Each year there are district contests held in which any musical student may participate. Pupils from all over the state gather to compete with each other in their district. lt is an honor for any student to be awarded a metal for first place. Although the nervousness practically gets the participants down, the award and the fun and excitement make it a worth while affair. Pat Buckner, Glenn Hager, and Gene Wilson as they ap- peared in the Pirates of Pen- zance. In Our Dramatic Moments Remember when we got make-up on our pretty formals? How excited we were, afraid we would stumble on the stage! Yes, this is one of the happy, carefree moments of our life. At the top is a scene from the senior play, Men Are Like Street Cars. The Life Of Our Actors Shirley Reed and Glenn Hager played the lead in the operetta, Pirates of Penzance, The dramatics class this year gave two produc- tions. One play was Thanks AwfuIly, a comedy in one act. At the bottom is a scene from Blue Beads. This was a serious play in one act. These plays were given at a convocation, and at P. T. A. meetings at many of the grade schools and here at the high school. They were also given for outside organizations. Every student in the dramatics class participated in these two productions. Golf For the first time in many years Southport had a golf team to represent the school in tournament play. Southport, a member of the South Central Conference, was invited to participate in the annual South Central Con- ference Golf meet held at Seymour, Indiana. - The members of the golf team were Ronny Baumgart, Roy Watts, Jim Atkins, Bob Miller, and coach, Jewel Young. The boys did well as golf was a new sport for most of the boys. They placed seventh in the S. C. C. Tournament. The low score for the Cards went to Roy Watts with an 87, second low went to Ronny Baumgart with a 90, third place went to Jim Atkins with a 97, and fourth went to Bob Miller with H3 strokes. C6Thanks Awfullyg' A scene from this production presented by the Dramatic Department. G.A.A. To promote better sportsmanship among the girls is the object of the G.A.A. Something new added to the activities of this club, which is composed of sophomore, junior, and senior girls, is the Intramural Volleyball League. The Intramural Teams al- so played several other schools and partici- pated in an all county play day held at Butler University. Sponsoring the Football Dance, St. Patrick Dance, Spring Athletic Dance, a soc-hop, a Talent Show, and serving on the Christmas party committee has kept the officers busy. Remember when it was cold and snowing during football season? The crowd still yelled for the team and the cheerleaders never gave up. Remember the double over-time in the Sectional Tourney? The cheerleaders were as tired as the players. This year we have two new members on the squad. Dudley Miller, a senior, is the first boy to be with the cheerleaders for the last three years. Nancy Brown, a freshman, is also a newcomer. These two along with Marilyn Hohn and Jane Nelson, seniors, and Joyce Ulrey, a junior, made up the cheerleading squad for l952. Two of the cheerleaders, Marilyn Hahn and Jane Nelson, received letter sweaters this year. Marilyn has served on the squad for three years and Jane for four years. The champs weren't outstanding, but they had team balance which compensated for their greenness and their lack of ability. Jack Morgan was assisted by a very able backfield coach, Bill Friedenburger. Dick Weddle was elected the Captain of the team. Dick was unanimously selected for the guard position on the Conference team while Don Jones was on the all-Conference team in the end position. Jack Wilson and Jim Baker were the Cards two chief offensive threats for the team, along with Carl Lasiter, who aided them in carrying their offensive burden. Jack Wilson led the Red Bird scoring followed closely by .lim Baker. Wilson had 48 points while Baker had 44.
