We were feeling so terribly big because we were starting to hlgh school. . . Then we saw what an enormous place it was and how few people we knew . . . Such bewilder- ment. . . . Sophomores . . . By this time we had managed to survive our first year and knew our way around rather well, so we didn't feel quite so lost. There were a few more clubs to join, and more social life to add to our enjoyment. Juniors . . . VVe were practically at home now, and knew almost every- one. . . This was the year of our first prom and also our class play. Class pins and rings caused quite a stir among the juniors, and certainly aroused the envy of all Fresh- men and Sophomores. Seniors . . . At last! We rule the roost. . . Didn't it make you proud to hear the Freshies whisper There goes a Seniorn when you passed? There were so many parties, dances, and club meetings we hardly had time to catch our breath as commencement week approached. 4 wears yes . . . 4 years to our day! . . . this 1950 Anchor is our story 6511 .I sul, 5 3 5 . H Our Actifvities . . . for our four years Clubs and Organizations Highlight The fourfold aims of the National Honor Society are to promote the principles of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The candidates for this organization are selected by a committee of faculty members from those who rank highest in the Junior and Senior classes in both grades and activities. The officers of the Honor Society are Carol Schulz, president, Sandra Kloess, vice- presidentg Dixie Key, secretary-treasurer, and Miss Helen Chandler, sponsor. Many of the benefits we students enjoy are a result of the Student Organization. Each year it sponsors the Magazine Drive and the Community Chest Drive. In order to make the class parties more of a success, dancing classes were offered to all students. A new activity, song fests, was sponsored by this organization. On several Fridays during activity period the entire school joined in group singing. Members of the Student organization are those chosen from the home room plus the class presidents. These elected members convey to their home rooms the problems that have arisen and discuss ways of improving them. The officers under the sponsorship of Calvin C. Leedy, principal, are Jerry Danner, president, Marilyn Fowler, secretary, and Joan Eberhart, treasurer. l l Honor Society Student Organization 46 0 o 0 o 0 Our Year W lth VGTIOUS Actwltles Radio plzxys, initiation, I'L'11LllH,2'S, puntuuiimcs, puctry-Tlicsc :uc hut :1 fcw of the vzlricil activities of thc hlask and Gnu-1 Cluh. Our Athletics . . . for our four years :gli-when 'UN w in E5 2'.,..,,..... ia.nQf?9'?' ,. Q S wx? 9' f Z5-H Q Our year will live long in the memory of Southport's Football fans, for it marked the first time in the school's history that a Cardinal gridiron team has finished undefeated and untied. Four years of hard w'ork by both the boys and the coaches went into this sterling team. When Warren Central went down before the revengeful Cardinals, I8 to 0, little did anyone realize that this was to be the boost that would start Coach Kenny Wassonls footballers to the county championship and an undefeated season. Spurred by such fine backs as Jack Hall, Don Kortepeter, Joe Blazek, Bob Emmett, and Lee lVIcGathey, South- port rolled over Ben Davis, Ieffersonville, and Sacred Heart in succession. The Southside Spartans had the good fortune to score 13 of the 26 total points scored against the Redbirds all year. Ben Davis and Decatur Central were the other two teams that managed to score against the powerful forward wall shaped by line coach Chauncey McDaniel. Rolling over hapless Beech Grove. 40 to 0, the high-flying Cardinals racked up their third straight victory. The Redskins from Manual, sporting one of the city's leading scorers, Frank Mascari, were next to try at the Red and White victory string. lVlaseari's net gain for the evening was 10 yards and Hall and Kortepeter sparkled with long touchdown runs. In defeating Cathedral, their second straight city foe, 6 to U, the Cards met their toughest opponent to date but were not to be denied. Lee lVIcGathey scored in the final minutes after a series of passes brought the ball to the three yard line. Fans in the South Central Conference got a preview of Southport football when the rugged Redbirds slapped the Columbus Bulldogs with a 19 to 0 defeat. Columbus was second to Connersville in the S.C.C. football race but proved no match to Kenny Wasson's team after the Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the first Hve minutes. Track Four of Southport's five returning track letter- men are shown in the gym before it turned warm enough to go outside. Last year these four boys, Lee McGathey, Roland Nerding, Dave Bertram, and Jack Hall helped pace the Cardinals to second place in the county and third place in the Seetionals. i ,X11 111m 11111-5.-1111 Ill 1111- NN11l'111 11115 1111 8111111111111-1 111 111111 1L1h1 1111-111111111111111 g.11111- 111111 lll't'11-1'lXll1 131-- Lxllllll' C1-1111111. 1111- 1-11111111 1'11.11111111111s11111 111111 llll 1111- 111-1'1-1111-11 51-11s1111 11:15 111 5111111-, 11111 11111-1 ll s11111i1-1 1-1151 111111, 1111- l'1l1llllL1Q,j'IIIjl L'111111111:11s 111'111'1- 1111- 1111111- 1'1g111111g 111111115 1111114 11--'11111 111111 11221111 111 gn 1111 111 11111 17 111 6. 1111111111111 1111- 11111'1i1:l1-111 11115 11-111' 11115 11111- 111' 1111- 111-51 111 1111- s1-1111111's 111f1111'1', 111 1111-1'11111k 1111- 51111111111111 11Il1' 111111111 11.3 ll 1:11155 11115111-1-11. This vear's bafkethall team, the first to have been under Coaeh Jewell Young for four complete years, eampiled an tnviabl' record of 20 wins and 3 loses. Stacking up a victory string of Eve straight wins, the Cardinals were making pre-season predietors look good as they carried a 65 point offensive average the first three games. It took Madison's State Champs to down the Cards in a game their eoaeh, Rav Eddy, said at tournament time was the best they had played all year. After the Madison defeat the Red-birds rolled over nine more opponents before stubbing their toes over defensive-minded Speedway. Old rivals lik: Short idgs, Cathedral, Franklin Township and VVarren Central fell before the Cardinal onslaught. Memories of the Speedway defeat were soon forgotten as Ben Davis and three eity foes, Broad Ripple, Nlanual and Howe, were bowled over by the prowess of Southport's lvaskethallers. Seniors Louie Fehmalfeldt and Dave Bertram were earrving the brunt of the Red and VVhite seoring attaek as they had all year. Rapidly improving juniors Rol- land Xerding, john Martin, and Gordie Miner rounded out the Cardinal first five. It was this squad that outlasted Manual in the first game of the seetionals to win 43 to 42. It was thofe same boys that saw Dave Bertram hurt in the elosing minutes of play and who had to fae: a much-improved Cathedral team that same night. A 14 point half-time lead st-:med to say that Bertram was not needed, but when an inspired Cathedral team overtook and defeated the valiant Cardinalu, the absenee of Bertramls rebounding and scoring power was sorely felt. Few people realized it but Southport's leading scorer, Louis Sehmalfeldt just missed breaking th 1 sehool's scoring record set by Kenny Bridges by I point. Bridges poured in SHS points in 25 games to Louie'.s 304 in 23 games. lhrough the years Southport athlttes have added numerous trophies to their display ease in the lower hall. S0 many in fact that a new trophy ease, fluorescent lighted, is to be built to accommodate them, cs- pet-ially the new baseball and football county trophies that were too large for the former case. The big high- light of the season was the Frosh defeat of Tech, 31 to 20. The record of their season found Coach Lester Routh's boys winning but 5 of 16. For the first time in the sehoolls history, intramural sports have been introduced at Southport. The basketball program, although started late, had time for a championship tournament and an all-star game. Under the supervision of Jack Morgan, an intramural baseball league was set up, similar to that of the basket- ball. Shown here are the seventeen basketball captains and Sponsor Morgan. VVrestling, a sport long popular with the Southport boys, this year finally gained some reeoflnition from Southport's fans. A wrestling meet with Tech, held after the Seottshurg basketball game, attracted some R00 people to watch. Althouirh foaeh Chauncey MeDaniel's lnatinen lost, it was only one of the fiye dual meets the team lost all year. Teeh took the County meet for the second eonseeutiye year and Southport again placed seeond. Allen Morgan, the only returning letterinan, won first plat-e honors along with Jerry Gruminell. The Cardinal grapplers also tied for second plaee in the newly sponsored I.H.S.A.A. Seetionals held at Bloomington. The next week at the state finals they eopped sixth place in a field of I9 as Bob Penee and Allen Morgan plaeed second in thc 138 pound and 95 pound elass and Ronnie Baunngart finished fourth in the 103 pound category to complete the scoring.
