Learning to do Doing to Learn Earning to Live Living to Serve This is the motto oi the Future Farmers ot America, whose South- port chapter was organized in l939. This is an organization ot and lor boys enrolled in vocational agricule ture course and who are interested in farming, Activities planned by the group have been a summer camping trip and a Father and Son Banquet. Qtticers are Richard Carey, presidentg Paul Denney, vice-presi- dentg Bob Egenolt, secretaryyg and Albert Hausman, treasurer Their sponsor is lvlr, Earl McCormick, Library Club A new organization at Southport is the Library Club sponsored by Mrs. Alice Black. Their project this past year vvas sending books to the more unfortunate students in the Philip- pines, Another purpose ol the club is to promote the general knowledge ot books and magazines and their proper care. The club members meet in the library and are the lirst to see the new editions The otlicers are Lois Comic, presidentg Joan Eberhart, vice-presidentg and Lyndal Reed, secretary-treasurer. Traffic Club Give you a push, buddy? . A . This is only one at the tasks that traffic boys are asked to perform, Parking the cars at ballgames, breaking up traltic jams, and policing the school busses are duties that this group undertakes each year, vvith the aid at chief Ray Linson. Model Club Remember . . , Tiny jet race cars . . A a model house . . . model air- planes . . . Such are the activities ot the Model Club. This is another ot our new organizations. Any boy liking a hobby on a model scale would be interested in the Model Club. Under the leadership ot Mr, Ray Linson, sponsor, and the club otticers, Richard Brandlein, presi- dentg Jack Byington vice-presidentg and Joe l-laviland, secretaryg the members learn the value of these worthwhile activities, Remember , , , the screams that went up tram the crowd as our yell leaders exerted th:-ir efforts to make sure the teams knew we were back- ing them all the way? Page and Chapter Club For those who like to read, and tor those who enioy reading many dit- terent types ot literature, the Page and Chapter Club is just the thing, Under the sponsorship ot Miss Betty Lou Turner! the club discusses ev- erything trom humorous essays to Shakespeare at its monthly meet- ings, This newly organized club is open to anyone who enjoys reading, Types ol literature and authors are picked at previous meetings and are discussed later, At the Club's Christ- mas party the business of authors and writings is togrotten tor a time, while the members concentrate on having a good time, Page Fifty-nine Booster Club The Sectionals of '49l How could we ever forgetl The Southport cheers were heard throughout the Butler barn , . . Cheers by members of the Booster Club . . , Remember hovv the boosters worked with all organizations to promote good sports- manship and fun for everyone. The principal duty of the club is to encourage school spirit, This spirit is exerted at pep sessions which are held before important athletic contests. Any student of South- port may belong to this organization. Officers who plan these pep sessions are Richard Theil, president, Joe Hurrle, vice-president, and Reg Nabring, secretary-treasurer, and Mr. Walter Kellam sponsor. Mask and Gavel Remember . . . The mock wedding, the radio plays, and pantomimes? These are but a fevv at the entertainments that the Mask and Gavel Club staged throughout the year in its meetings, One doesn't have to be an Ethel Barrymore to be a member of the Mask and Gavel. This club is open to any freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior who is interested in dramatics, radio or speech. This club, under the direction of Mrs. Kathleen Richie, public speaking teacher, was changed this year from the Speakers' Club to Mask and Gavel in order to represent more phases of speech work in its name. Members elected Ralph Yount, presi- dent, Paul Lindstrom is vice-president, and Mar- tha Osborn is secretary. Page Sixty Latin Club The study of the Latin language takes on new life and meaning through the activities of the Latin Club, This organization, sponsored by Mrs. Elsa lvlaiors, devotes much time and care to the preservation of the old Roman customs and the observation of traditional Roman festivities. The club has several parties during the year. These include the Stygian Revels, celebrated as a Hal- loween party, and the Lupercaila, or Valentine's Day a tradition which the Romans took much more seriously than we do, At the club's celebra- tion of the Saturnalia, corresponding to our Christmas, carols are sung in Latin, Latin games are played and games are exchanged. On the ldes of lvlarch, the day of Julius Caesar's assassination, the club program consists of talk and readings concerning the life and accomplishments of Caesar, A new and interesting feature is the Roman Senate, whose officers, elected at the beginning of the year, are attired at meetings and on special occasions in purple-bordered robes togae praetextae, official garment of the Roman senators. l-lonorary magistrates, the Pon- tifex Maximus and Scribor, appointed as a reward for high scholastic standing also receive togas. Officials of this year were Joan Dinkel, consul, Betty Nabring, pro-consul, Virginia Reese, Aedile, Janet Dyer, Quaester. At an early meeting, new members are initiated by the second-year stu- dents. During the regular activity periods, after business has been attended, Roman myths are read, or some other form of entertainment is provided. Members may purchase Latin Club pins available through the Junior Classical League of America. l Page Sixty-one Perry News Extra? Exim?
