GEORGE Trustee We are fortunate in having as the leader of education in Perry Town- ship a man of such great personal worth and high educational qualifications. Mr. George has used his qualities for our benefit. C. CALVIN LEEDY Principal Through the eiiicient efforts of our principal, the daily routine of our school has maintained a smooth course despite the disrupting infiuences of war and the necessary changes needed to adopt it to a wartime schedule. WALTER G. KELLAM Vice-Principal Mr. Kellam's interest in school activities has been expressed through his leadership of the Booster Club, his personal guid- ance of students in their freshman year, and his many contacts with the upper classmen. Every student in the school has at some time come into contact with him and has learned to admire him. BLANCHE E. PENROD Girls' Advisor All girls are fortunate because they are Miss Penrodis hobby as well as her care. Her work for younger girls is in the form of conferences and guidance. Her friend- ship with older girls brought about the Sen- ior-ority with its many ac- tivities for Juniors and Seniors. C. ELLIS ROBINS Senior Sponsor The Senior year at Southport High School is flavored by association of the students with an ad- visor who is loved and respected by young peo- ple. His smil-e and pat- ience and helpfulness are never eclipsed by lack of interest and understand- ing. IJURTEAEHINE STAFF IJUR FAELILTY MRS. EDITH ATKINS Indiana University -B.S. Southport has been blessed with teachers who have a wealth of experi- ence and a world of understanding. The seniors of 19-H want to express their gratitude for four years of wonderful experience and learning under the superb guidance of these teachers. A few changes have taken place during the four years, but the vacancies have been satisfactorily filled. A little more than two and one-half years of our stay in high school has been marred by a terrible war. Members of our class have entered the armed service, but they have gone with a will, and this is due in part to the invaluable leadership of our faculty. Our classmates and alumni and others in service have found fellowship through cor- respondence with these splendid persons with whom we have worked and talked daily. just as the pictures and degrees tell little about this fine group, so do these words fail to justify the pride of the class of 1944 in our faculty. Our affection and respect for our teachers and principal can- not be told in symbols inked on a page, but are etched in our grateful hearts. Q F BLUES ENIJLIRE Since Southport High School has changed over to a war-time schedule, the club activities have been re- stricted. In spite of this sudden change and restriction of activities some clubs have been steadily maintained. There have been fewer school dances and parties, but the morale and spirit of the students have not Wavered. The clubs under the supervision of the school are the Senior-ority, Hi-Y, Booster, Future Farmers of Ameri- ca, Girls' Athletic Association, Traffic Club, and Stu- dent Organization. Under the invaluable leadership of the teachers these clubs have spent a year in useful activities. Although these organizations are considered extra-curricular ac- tivities, they help to form the right habits of citizenship. Many former members of these clubs have become lead- ing citizens both in and out of school. In their usual club routine they have come to an understanding of democracy and disciplined liberty as separate from un- bridled action. In conjunction with formal classes these meetings developed young adults from callow youth. Front Row: Bob Murphy, Peyton Printz, Dave Stumph, Bob Ritchhart, Alvin Roehling. Back Row: Mr. Liechty, sponsor, Harold Hensley, Bob Car- ter, Diclc Esmon, Bill Schmalfeldt, Lewis Doll, Bob Stoneburner. The Hi-Y Club is a branch of the Y.M.C.A. The club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Clarence Liechty, strives to set an example of clean scholarship, clean living, and clean sports. Robert Murphy presided as club president 5 Don Crawshaw as vice-president, David Stump, as secre- tary 5 Norman Elrod, as treasurer g Robert May, as sergeant-at-arinsg tand Dick Esmond, as chaplain. Delegates from four surrounding counties held their tenth District Conference here on March 21. The Hi-Y sponsored a paper drive and a drive for collecting soft drink bottles. STUUENT UREANIZATIUN This group is composed of a representative from each home room and the President of each class. Under the guidance of Mr. Leedy, the organization promotes the interests of the stu- dents and the school. They sponsored a i'Remember Pearl Harbor bond drive and the Homecoming Dance. Perhaps the greatest endeavor of the second semester was the Magazine Drive. The campaign this year was enlivened by a friendly rivalry with Ben Davis High School and was the most suc- cessful in the history of the' drive at Southport. The Senior-ority is an organization of Junior and Senior girls who are interested in cultural growth and personality development. Under the sponsorship of Miss Penrod, the Senior- ority has promoted many worthy enterprises for the school. Some of these were the distribution of tags for the junior Red Cross, soliciting funds for the Tuber- culosis Drive, and decorating the school during the Christmas season. 'llhroughout the year a series ot social events that symbolize the ideals and aims of the club was arranged for the members. Among these meetings were the Initia- tion Ceremony, the Christmas Dinner, the Mother and Daughter Meeting, a style show, and the Senior Recog- nition Breakfast. BUUSTER BLUE Bots NlURPHY, JACKIE Lou FABEL, BILL BRANSON AND MR. IQELLAM In 1941 many clubs were flourishing in Southport high school, and the Booster club was among the most popular. The purpose ot the club is to create full support and enthusiasm toward any event sponsored by our school. The entire student body is represented in this organiza- tion. Our Booster Club is a, firm believer in the saying, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It spon- sors dances, pep sessions, and celebrations, for out- standing accomplishments during the school year. Beloved by all students of Southport, in or out of the Booster Club, is its kindly sponsor, Mr. Kellam. 1 ANEHUR STAFF Upper Group Seated: Jackie Nash, typistg Peggy Karstadt, associate, Norma Rieman, typistg Ebin Willoughby, literaryg Jackie Lou Fabel, literaryg Billie Mae Winchest-er, lay outg Wesley Hienry, lay out, Pat Shimer, lay out, Betty Westerfield, sports. The staff is composed of Seniors selected by the faculty. In this book, we have tried to mirror an authentic picture of our high school life so that in later years we may look back in this mirror and see the reflection of our Senior year. The Anchor Staff of 1944 has been confronted with unusual difhculties. Many of the things which are essen- tial in publishing a book have been restricted because of war time shortages. We of the' Anchor Staff wish to express our grati- tude to our sponsor, Miss Kersey, who has unselfishly contributed her time, effort, and patience toward the construction of this book. FUTURE FARMERS UE AMERICA Under the sponsorship of Mr. McCor- mick the Southport Chapter is a part of the state and national organization known as the Future Farmers of America. The primary objective of the F.F.A. is to encourage and help boys interested in agriculture and to develop those abilities that will make them better farmers and agricultural leaders. The officers for 1943-44 are as follows: Paul Egenolf, Presidentg John Peale, Yice-President: KVallace Van Dyke g Sec- retaryg Richard Thomas, T reasurerg and Tim Pennington. Reporter.
