Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1988 volume:

MEMORIES A piece of the past as well as the future of times well spent and those not A moment of glory and victory here and there Some reminiscences silk, others satin, leather, and even iron or leaden gray Essences of events special and exciting, always inside, alive as if new Revelations of mischief and mayhem Recollections especially of special people and times spent together in comaraderie A glowing globe, an internal ball of neon strands that can be unravelled and rewrapped, Memories are. Always. - Erik Hoffner “MEMORIES” It is said that the best is yet to come. Has it ever been said that some of the best has already come. Memories are impressions upon our minds that help us to persevere in the future. Memories are reflections that make the past live on. Memories are the good times and the bad times. Memories are those that will dictate our future. The past exists to be remembered. Whether it's the first day of high school, a special dance, that someone special, your lost love, new friendships, the championship, the girls tennis team proving to everyone else what we've known for years, or the “awesome” lunch program of '86. Everyone has their own special memories. Some may be sad, happy, and some totally off the wall. Every person has those certain moments which they will cherish forever. No matter what yours are, the fond rememberances of our short but meaningful past, are ones that will be engraved in our memories forever. 2 Hf (f j • Memories to last a lifetime.. . 1. “Sunshine on my Shoulder. 2. “Peggy. Only after we left Junior High and entered High School did we truly appreciate the lessons that you taught us. We constantly find ourselves recalling information that we thought we would never use again. You took complex math concepts and simplified them for us. We still remember you saying “Work as a binary computer. and “This is my time!”. You are a teacher who has maintained the traditional values of hard work, but at the same time stayed contemporary in your teaching methods. This strict, but fair teaching method gave us an invaluable background on the fundamentals of mathematics. Therefore, we the Class of 1988, would like to formally thank you, Mrs. Pawlik, not only for your interest in us as math students, but also for your care for us as individuals. 1 w These pictures seem to capture the highlights of 1987 1. We all had the time of our lives. We body-surfed, had volleyball games, played paddle-board games, and had friz-bee fights. When we got home we were all sunburned, but it was worth it! -J. Pierson We all recall specific moments from our lives. Times that may stand out in our minds. Anything from the first day of school to a high school dance. Everyone reflects on the past because the past lives on. Memory, the experience of the mind can aid us in the present. One day Butch took a potatoe knish and threw it at the wall. It stuck! By eighth period study halt it had moved up the wall about 1 1 2 feet. One of the best times I can remember from my Junior year was Mrs. Pres by's typing class. Lynn and I had just come back from lunch and were laughing and having a good time. We typed for a little while then Mrs. Pres by played “elevator music” for us to type to. Well when that music came on we both broke out laughing. When we left last March for our trip to Spain no one knew what to expect. Was it going to be all boring tours or rather alot of fun with interesting tours thrown in? The latter held true. What we were in for was a two week journey traveling on a single bus as a single group. First stop was Madrid. Being our first experience in Spain we were curious to see what lurked in the shadows. La Plaza Mayor, the Mesones, the Escorial, the Valley of the Fallen and the flamenco show will remain in our memories forever. By the end of our trip we were all tired, but the adrenaline was still pumping strong. Seeing that we had to get up at 4:00 A.M. in order to catch our plane home most of us stayed up for forty-eight hours straight. Even the last couple hours in our hotel contributed some unforgettable memories. But that's what it's all about, fond memories. And ours are WONDERFUL! Founding Voices: A. Koke, M. Gagen. How many of us would have the courage to show our sketches or stories to friends because we liked our work? More than likely, very few of us. Art or English classes offer us an opportunity to exercise, develop and utilize our special talent but usually our audience is that particular subject’s teacher. The Literary Magazine is a way to get your work recognized. It is a forum for student creativity that includes written, photographic, and art works: it is now in its third year of publication. We learn how to form a blue's progression, transpose it to our instruments concert key, and play a blue's rhythm. Last year the Jazzlab played aboard a firetruck in the Halloween Parade as well as played a few concerts. Likewise, this year's Jazzlab was featured in several performances. 77 -K. The trip to France wilt definitely be a memory that will live in the minds of those students forever. Who could ever forget their first plane trip setting foot on European soil for the first time, or, the sight of Paris at night? The cruise on the bateau-mouche, the ride through the countryside arriving at the spectacular Mont-St.-Michel and the beautiful chateaux of the Loire Valley are some of the highlights of the trip. I'm sure all students will be saying “Je me Souviens pour toujours!” - Ms. Gilmore 78 Charlie Brown, at Southold High School? The musical play for 1988 is “You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. ” am really looking forward to participating in this year’s musical. 4s a senior, this will be my last acting opportunity, and would like to make it special. -K. Bednoski 79 SOUTHOLD CHEERLEADERS REMINISCE ABOUT THEIR MOST MEMORABLE, FUNNIEST, AND WORST EXPERIENCES AS A CHEERLEADER: “The most embarrasing moment I've experienced as a cheerleader was during my very first home game. had only been attending S.H.S. for about three months so I was not familiar with everyone. When one of the players made a basket and it was my turn to do an individual sideline cheer. started cheering at the top of my lungs for “Bill Verity. Later found out that he didn't make the basket - in fact, he wasn't even on the team! - Colleen Duffy. “My most memorable event in cheering was when we won 3rd place in our first competition. It made us feel rewarded for all the hard work we put in during the season. - Donna Ring old. “My favorite cheering memory was singing very ‘unique’ songs on the way home from games. We're definitely not ready for the radio. - Donna Goldsmith. “My funniest memory was when we did a cheer at Pierson, and laughed through the whole thing because I looked so horrible. So we did it again - after the game. - Megan Maiorana. “My worst memory was when when I was trying out in 10th grade with Lori and Tracey. went down into my split and I heard my leg crack. I tore my left hamstring! - Jenni Trczinski. “My most interesting memory from Varsity cheering is when made it. Everyone thought I would just because of Beth. But know that made it because of me! - Jean-Marie Pierson. Cheerleaders by name 1. Soccer: L. Cooper, L. Cornell. K. Montgomery. C. Graseck, L. Hughes. 2. Football: S. Nelson. M. Shelby. L. Lieblein. They won the Suffolk County Class “C championship. They also added a combined Suffolk County Class C-D Championship, and a New York State Southeast Regional Championship. The journey was not an easy one. The Settlers had to overcome incredible odds. The Settlers had to beat two teams that they have not had a victory over in two seasons. In 1986 the Settlers did not get as far as they did in 1987. The Settlers lost a 1- 0 decision to Mattituck in the Semi-Final of the Suffolk County Class C tournment. In the New York State Southeast Regional Championship the Settlers came back from a 2- 0 first half deficit to tie the game and force the game into and through overtime to an eventual 3-1 victory in a penalty kick shoot out against the Nassau Class “C Champion, Wheatley High School. The Settlers ended with a loss in the New York State Class “C Semifinal game... but its not what you don't accomplish, it's what you do that counts! -Bill Geyer. Varsity Soccer: S. Heidtmann, B. These persons included All League players Lynn Wilkins and Kate Feeney along with Megan Tuthill and Sandy Rumede. As the season continued we executed better skills and techniques which allowed us to defeat our rival Mattituck. I am looking forward to a much improved, stronger team in the future. With some hard work, concentration, and enthusiasm we can be in the running for another League title. 83 TENNIS SOCCER Despite the fact that the J. V. Soccer Team had only 12 players and on numerous occasions played with 11 and 10 men, the squad managed to compile an impressive 8-5 record. Among the highlights were a victory over a tough Center Moriches squad (3-2), a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Mattituck, and a thrilling 3-2 victory over LaSalle in which Larry Van Wart scored the winning goal in overtime with the Southold J. V. playing with only 10 men for nearly 25 minutes after an injury sidelined Andrew Olsen. -Coach Golden J.V. Soccer: J. Ross, A. Smith, D. Olsen, D. Grubman, D. McGonegal, 2nd Row; Coach Golden, A. There is an invisible unity that exists between the players, which appears throughout the bowling season. Our team is small enough to enjoy each other's laughs and personalities, yet strong enough for support through victory or defeat. But- no matter what the outcome of the scores, our team has always remained in high spirits, and if it weren't for our coach, Mr. Kanz, all this would not be possible. Thanks Mr. Kanz! -Denise Conte 85 BASKETBALL BASKETBALL This year Boy's J.V. BASKETBALL Coming off an outstanding season last year - winning the league championship. South old- Greenport’s Girts Varsity Basketball Team has their work cut out for them. Moving up to League VII will certainly be a challenge for this year's team. With the leadership of returnees - Lynelle Faszczewski, Kerry Gallagher, Lynn Wilkins, and Donna Vaccariello, we hope to be competitive and certainly play skillful basketball, as well as display outstanding sportsmanship. - Coach Pendergast. SOFTBALL The Southold Varsity Softball Team had an outstanding season, which included winning the League VIII championship, as well as the Suffolk County Class D championship for the 3rd consecutive year. Something which definitely goes unnoticed, was, the girls received the Conference IV sportsmanship award presented by the Softball officials. Five members of the team were selected to the AH League team - Kate Feeney, Barbara Maltese and Jen Wilkinson, and for the first time Southold placed 2 girls on the All Suffolk County Team - Kerry Gallagher and Lynn Wilkins. 87 Var. BASEBALL WRESTLING What's to remember? After a match you're more tired than you've ever been and the pain your body is feeling, is intense. Wrestling is a one on one sport. When you get out on the mat whether you win or lose depends upon what you put out, there's nobody there to pass to. In the 86-87 Wrestling season the team was 2-2 wrestling at Southold. Varsity Wrestling: Top row - John Dinizio, Jeff King, Dustin Blackwell, John Ross, Shawn Kolonkowski, Brian Cavanah, Joe Burtelinee, Coach Paul Davis. CROSS COUNTRY This year's Varisty Cross Country team was comprised of Brian Regan, Ted Castro, Eric Brewer, and Peter Jagel (Greenport). In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside And hymns in the cozy parlor, the tinkling piano our guide. So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamor With the great black piano appassionate. The glamour Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast Down in the flood of remembrance, 1 weep like a child for the past. (“Plano”, written by D.H.
