Our Class V THE TIME: 6:15 A. M. THE DAY: Monday, April 18 THE DESTINATION: Washington, D. C. THE OBJECT: To have a wonderful time and to learn all about our nation’s capital. OBSERVATIONS: Poker and black jack to while away the time on the train. . . meeting other students in other cars. . . trying to eat peas and drink coffee in the swaying dining car. . . the long walk through Union Station. . . carrying those heavy bags . . . Fred and Calvin, our bus drivers. . . the drive to the Capitol. . . “elongating” for our group picture. . . “hubba. hubba” . . the view from the door of the Capitol. . . those long cigarette holders . . . the impressive Lincoln Memorial. . . the WAEiHI

HISTORY ingos and Mr. Wood, we again held class elections with these results: Rosemary Polywoda, President; Joe Krupski, Vice-President; Betty Simon, Secretary; Lee Tuthill, Treasurer. Our Student Council delegates were Sheila Donahue, Diana Davids, Steve Sledjeski and Mary Conway. This year Pauline Zimmer-mann and Elaine Wells joined us. Who can forget this year . . . “segregation” on the homeroom scene. . . receiving our class rings after what seemed to be a long, long wait. . . wearing red and white, our class colors, on the day of the Honor Society initiations. . . the tropical atmosphere of the Junior Prom, “Aloha”. . . the volcano in the middle of the floor. . . the two hula girls who gave everyone leis. . . the music of the Co-Eds. . . the king and qtieen of the prom, Marion Grigonis and Steve Sledjeski. September, 1959 and we were seniors! We had completed our magazine campaign with a record high of over $8,000 in sales. John Robohm was our top salesman. We chose our class officers; Joan Butler, President; Steve Sledjeski, Vice-President; Betty Simon, Secretary; Lee Tuthill, Treasurer. Danielle Garland joined our class. This was the best year of all. . . the senior play, “Tish” . . . all those hours of practice . . . the pizza pie . . . the party after the play. . . going “beat” with our senior ball, “Green Grotto” . . . the floor show. . . that “way out” mobile. . . the high point of the year, our Washington trip. . . the Senior Banquet. . . presenting the year book to Miss Domingos and Mr. Wood. . . our graduation. It seems hard to believe that our high school years have ended. Few years could go as fast as these seem to have gone. 21

Joan Rysko’s disappearing bed. . . visits from the house detective. . . the phone call at 6:45, Tuesday morning. . . the glazed looks at breakfast. . . the wait in line outside the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. . . the lovely money. . . the beautiful Jefferson Memorial. . . Rock Creek Zoo. . . the monkey house. . . Arlington. . . lunch at Hogates’. . . Mt. Vernon. . . the flowers that were picked. . . the cow pasture. . . dinner at the hotel . . the boat ride. . . all those people. . . the amusement park . . . the Mad Mouse. . . getting home at 1:00 A. M. . . telephone time again. 6:45, Wednesday morning. . . all 898 steps of the Washington Monument. . . the “softies” who took the elevator. . . the Wax Museum. . . the trip to Annapolis. . . those handsome midshipmen. . . buying Navy sweatshirts. . . the Casino Royale. . . the floorshow we couldn’t see. . . the greeting to S. H. S. with only five students at the table and Mr. Wood under it. . . the shows on G and F Streets. . Lorraine’s laryngitis. . . the Champagne Room. . . water balloons and fire crackers. . . that house detective. . . the party in the Emerald Room. Lois’s National Honor Guard. . . the party in 511. . . the beaten path to the People’s Drug Store. . . staying up all night. . . a peanut fight in 320 at 6:00 A. M. . . the headaches on Thursday morning. . . the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery. . . last minute souvenirs . . . more pictures. . . the trip to the station. . . farewell to Washington. . . the party in Greenport’s car. . . the conga line . . . Port Jefferson . . . the quiet bus ride home. CONCLUSION. Everyone had a wonderful time ! ! !
