Vapor Trails As we look back upon the events of the past four years we see many events or moments which will always evoke mlxed emotions feellnffs olf pride ln accomplishment of Joy and of regret Let us for a moment review the history of the Class of 1957 In September of 1953 we fifty bewildered but determined freshmen made our 1n1t1al trek through the halls of S H S as high school students With Mrs Case and Mr Staiger as co advisors vue proceeded through the first day with the usual routme of getting lost in the shuffle and being put back on the straight and DSFFOW WHY by SOITIG SYMDHUWUC UDPGT classman After mtroduc ion to our various teachers and instructions in the ways of the high school we headed home at the end of the day with the assurance that four excitmg years lay ahead With the election of OHICCFS we placed our confidence in Tom Sledjeski to guide our frosh activities Robert Simon B111 Zetro k1 and Frank Raynor were elected VICE president treasurer and secretary respectively Our socfal activities that year were limited to a beach party held at Judy Whlteheads Everyone had a bang up tnme Our Sophomore year began with the addition of two new classmates B111 Stawitz and Anita Standley When the votes for class officers were tabulated Bob Slmon was president and Tom Sledjeski vice president Kathy McCafIery was to handle the financial activities of the class while Jane Tuthlll was elected secretary One our classmates Midge Petty made us all very proud by winning the S C S P A wrfting award In May a Sophomore class party was held in the cafeteria Dancing to records and sipping cokes made the evening vexy enjoyable We closed the school year by having another beach party this time at Joan Gagens It proved equal in fun and excitement to the one held the previous year Who can forget Mr Staigers antics and Miss Banfields qulet sense of humor? With the end of sum ner vacation we returned to school in an elite crowd of upperclassmen This time we welcomed a newcomer from Hempstead Merritt Miller but regretted the departure of B111 Stawitz Tom Sledjeski once again assumed the presidency with Robert Simon as VICE president Kathy McCaffery resumed her chores as treasurer and Midge Petty was elected secretary May marked the end of glorious anticipation and anxiety because durmg this maglcal month our class rings arrived Excitement and class Dllde soared to new peaks Then June rolled around and the gala event of the year was proudly presented by the Junior Class Our Junior Prom with the theme of Stairway to the Stars proved a very successful project With Jack Sherwoods Orchestra providng the swinging music a most emoyable time was had by all We had an mtake of 521150 Before we knew it another vacation had ended and we came to the stark realization that we were Seniors With Mr Stalger again as class advisor the entlre class was united for the first time 1n our high school careers At the election of officers Barry Glbson was elected president with Tom Sledjeski as vice president Kathy McCafTery who had proved her competence as a financial wlzard became treasurer for the third year in successlon Philip Wentzel was elected secretary During the first two weeks of school our magazine drive began Members of the Class of 57 scurrying hither and thither through the neighborhood with pencil paper and subscription stubs became a familiar sight to mhabltants of Southold and nearby communities The effort was not in vain though We established a sales record by garnermg around S5700 worth of subscrlptxons Joan Gagen and Kathy MCCZUCIY copped the prizes for top salesmanship Soon after the magazine drive was over the acting bug bit and preparations for the dramatic highlight of the season were in full swing In November the Senior Play a stirring mystery entitled In the Dead of Night was proudly staged by the Class of 57 An entranced and appreciative audience applauded the efforts of the cast and crew On this senture we grossed S460 80 With March came our Sen1or Ball The Blg Beat Rocking to the rhythm of the Dave Hersey combo a marvelous tlme was had by all present Then came the climax of four years of hard work and anxlous waiting On April 15 we boarded the tram at Port Jefferson It was Washington D C or Bust Those four days in our nations capital will be remembered as the out standing event of the Seniors high school career There you have an outlme of the career of the members of the Class of 1957 during our stay at Southold High School We had our hard times and trials Our scholastic achievements were not always as great as we expected or wanted them to be and report card day was frequently a day of horror But when we saw the smiles of pride and satisfaction on the faces of our parents, relatives and well wishers on graduation mght we knew that our ups and downs had not been 1n vain and were a necessary part of our preparation for the future . . .
