Baseball fwhls sprmg has been by far the worst baseball season 1n many years The very bad weather prevented many practlce sess1ons and the boys had to play the f1rst part of the season Wlth hardly any practlce Then too there have been trans portat1on dlffxcultles l1m1t1ng games to those w1th nearby towns There were more candldates for baseball thxs year than there have been for a long txme Some showed good prospects and although they wxll not play th1s year they w111 undoubtedly make the team 1n the future Unfortunately some cand1 dates report for practice once or tw1ce and then qult because they dont get a chance to play 1m medlately They should practlce anyway 1n order We should have won the flrst game of the season agamst Mattltuck easlly slnce Shlpuleskx allowed but one h1t to the Mattxtuck p1tchers seven De fensxve weaknesses due to lack of practlce cost us the game by a score of 3 to 2 The boys felt bad about 1os1ng to Mattltuck and worked harder wlnmng the next game w1th Green port 4 to 3 In the th1rd game at Rlverhead both teams had a bad day The game was very loosely played and Rlverhead came out on top 7 to 6 Elak pltched thirty four 1nn1ngs and showed much promlse Wlth a complete reversal of form from the pre v1ous game Southold played an excellent game to defeat Greenport 5 to 0 The boys looked as well a any team Southold has had fo1 many years Sh1pulesk1s control was perfect and the boys backed h1m wxth errorless fleldxng The left handed p1tch1ng dxdnt hmcler them at all because the whole team h1t well The next game wlth Rlverhead bungs the record up to date Agaxn Southold played a loose game and as a result Rxverhead was vlctorlous 5 to 2 Rxverhead s prtcher held SHS to two scattered h1tS wh11e Shlpuleskl was h1t freely The lmeup used rn most of the games IS Shlpu leskl p1tcher G Dlckerson catcher Dav1ds fnst base Machmchlck second base E Drumm short stop A Skwara thlrd base R Young left fleld Elak center f1eld Doroskx Jermck and Stanke w1cz rlght f1eld The el1m1nat1on of league competxtlon has dulled the boys interest somewhat It IS d1H1cult for them to take the same keen lnterest ln the hard work of practlce sess1ons w1th nothlng at stake How ever there are stlll several games to be played and we hope the team wxll get xnto Its strlde and w1n most of the remammg games 4 l 1 , l l ' I y , - S ,. . . . . . . , . l l . . , , . . . .
