Assembly Programs hen a student comes to school one of the most xvelcome notrces he can see rs 40 mrnute perroors Assembly at 3 00 The frrst ot these srgns appeared on October 8 xxhen Mr Jesse Roblnson xx as the assembly speaker Mr Robrnson has spent r great part of hrs llfe studyrng the musrcal rn strunrents of prrrnrtrxe people datrng as for back as 2400 B C Mr Robrnson appealed dressed rn the garb of a Palestrne shepherd and playrng a breprpe He sang and played many loxely sonffs on such rnstruments as frddles xx 1th one to rou strrngs a harp xvrth ten stllngs and cymbals On December 23 the rnformal Chrr nras ass rnblv was held rn the gym After the band pl ryed sex er rl selectrons the Ch11StlTl3S story from the Brble xx rs read and the s lute to the Chrrstran and the Unrted State flags were grven The presents were ther crrstrrbutec. Mrs Dorrs Mason a sculptr ess was the assembly speaker on March 15 Chester Lamakl xx rs chosen to be the model and wnrle she talked she modeled Chets head Mrs Mason told hoxx to get drfferent expressrons by tellrng xvhrch muscles control them She also showed many of the tools she uses ln her work of the country and therr works Clark Mrlls the frrst Amerrcan sculptor and Greenough the frrst to xvork rn bronze were especrally me-ntroned Sho also told about Gutzon Borglum xvho sculp tured the four plesrdents heads on Mt Rushmore rn the Black Hrlls Thrs sprrng sex eral movres released by the Offrc of War Informatron were enjoyed by the students These rncluded newsleels and shorts on scenes from England the Arnerrcan Army and war on the home front Some especrally lrked were Our Ally Chrna shovxrng Chrnas part rn the war and Drvrde and Conquer showrrrg how Germany make use ol the powerful weapon O1 xx ords The hrgh school grrls have had several speakers thrs year On Aprrl 26 Mrs Ethel Prrnce an alum na of Southold Hrgh School and noxv executrxe secretary of the Nurses Assocratron of Long Island spoke to the grrls on nursrng She spoke of the xery urgent need for IIUISBS and of the many fielfls now open to them The movre she showed xvhrch xv rs of a typrcal nurses trarnlng course gaxe much rnformatrorr concernrng trarnrng and character nec cssary to be a good nurse Mlss Arroxvsmrth of Russell College of Albany New York spoke to the Junror and Senror grrls She emphaswed the necessrty of a college course and especrally of rts need after the war She spoke of the drfferent professrons that can noxv be taken wrth college courses at Ml Rooney of the F and Senror grrls on May rn the F B I such as marnly clerks and then twenty four Russell Sage B I spoke to the Junlor 13 He spoke on openrngs stenographers typrsts but chances of advancement He gaxe the requrrements and also explarned th t you can get a college educatron xvhrle you work On May 5 Walter Van Hartsma spoke to the hr h school students on Rom rnce oi Weather and also showed colored prctures He xx as formerlx regrstrar of Boerng School of Aeronautrcs and chref xxeather obserxer at Prkes Peak Mr Van Hrrtsma has trax eled by arr a drstance of 40 trrne round the world Mathematrcs scrence and a good knowledge ot the Englrsh larguage are rmportant rn gettrng rnto the xxolk of meteorology and axr tron He told by word and prcture about Stratosphere flyrng cloud formatrons and the use ot the x rrrous weather rnstruments lr ara rnior mal meetrng or the Junrors and Senrols later he told of the opportunrtres rn the freld or flyrng both now and alter the war Gne of the best of the assemblrcs concerned our ne rest Latrn Amerrcarr ner hbor Mexrco D A B Keeler xxho has llved for many years there brought loxely colored movl s and n rnterestrng talk on May 26 The moxres emphasrzed the cus tcms darly work and harrdrcraft of the Mercrcans It rs often sard that travel rs a lrne form ot educ tron That rs true even when the trax elrng rs done through someone elses eyes and moxres the stu dents rn Southold haxe drscovered Lreutenant Speer and WAAC L1 utenant Schr re der spoke on May 27 to the Junrors and Senrols about the Army Arr Corps They also showed the movre Wrnnrng the War to rllustr ate m rny pornts Many tr ld are open rn th1 branch or the servrce as rt takes thrrty frve men on the ground to keep one plane rn the all Lreutenant Schraedel spoke on the work of the WAACs and told the students to be sure to tell therr older srsters xvhat she had sald Mlss Grtta Sereny a natrxe of Hungary spoke orr June 2 at an assembly to the S H S students Mrs Sereny was educated rn England and Swrtz erland and studred dramatlcs under the famous Max Rernhardt She has had many encount rs xvrth the Storm Troops and was rn France when that country was occupred Clhe spoke of the Underground and the guerrlla warfare strll Car rred on rn the occupred countrres MIS Sereny told of some of her experrences xvrth the Nazls and of the condrtrons she found 1 Europe When applyrng for her passport to le xe the occupr d countrres she xx rs grxen a book tc read It was an account of everythrng she had sard and done for the past srx years She told the stud nts thrs to show how thorough and clever thc Gestapo rs MISS Sereny closed wrth a plea for Amerrcans to be truly grateful for therr herrtage and to as sume the responsrblrtres arrsrng from lrxrng rn the frrst and best democracy rn the World , .. Eighth Grade 7he Eighth Grade elected the following officers: ' president, Frank Diller, vice-president, Bar- bara Dickerson: secretary-treasurer, Marjorie Mc- Carffery. At Christmas time they bought a tree and drew names for gifts. They also had a party. Some of the boys took part in the intramurals this winter. Herbert Fisher won first prize in the Poppy Poster Contest in which the seventh, eighth and ninth grades took part. The total number of bonds purchased by the Eighth Grade this year up to the middle of May was Sl,030. Six members of the Eighth Grade graduated from the Airplane Recognition Class and many more have volunteered to spot planes. Seventh Grade f., he Seventh Grade bought S300 worth of War Bonds and about S253 worth of Stamps Ad drtronal bonds worth S350 have been sold through thrs grade making the total S903 This rs enough to buy one of the Jeeps bought by Southold Hr h School In music each pupil wrote a 500 1000 word composition on different topics which had been assigned Sexeral of these appeared rn The Echo Ten of the members of the class are rn the S H Band All but three of the grrls are rn the Girls Glee Club Three of the grrls are drum majorettes for the Brnd Defense outhold High School contributed unselfrshly to the war effort rn 1942 43 The students as well as the teachers wrllrngly gate a large part of their time rn order that they might do their part The students and teachers w ho serxe as spotters certainly deserxe a xote of praise and thanks A the latter part of the year under Mr Darts guidance The lrrge attendance at this class was due to the fact that grrls as well as boys were p cs n A class rn Internatronrl Morse Code was also orgrnrzed Robert Prrce and John Mrchrnchrck hrd charge of a tlrss of about twenty students Many of the grrls took the Home Nursing Course under the drrectron of Miss Varl school nurse The girls learned such things rs frrst ard crre of the Prns were awarded to several members of the class rn Home Economics They were grxen to Phyllis Baker Sarah Waller Ethel Anne Martin Margaret Neary and Joan Rothman Some of the girls worked rn the cafeteria They are Beverly Whipple Martha Cochran Rose Gradowskr Phyllis Baker Alice Wheeler Barbara Pulese and Mar garet Neary Several of the girls have made stuffed dolls rn Art which are being grven to the Red Cross Jack 'VIcCaffery Paul Cassidy and Rrchrrd Purcell re cerxed diplomas for satrsfrctorrly completing the course rn Airplane ldentrfrcatron Activities sick care of children and important facts about communicable diseases Southold High also had the honor of buying two Jeeps by the purchase of War Bonds and Stamps The students will probably haxe bought another one by the end of June A number of the boys are members of the New Guard This training will be very xaluable to them when they are called upon to take their olrce rn the armed forces Sexeral of the boys hfrxe already recerx ed their questionnaires and expect to leaxe soon Brll Cardinal Walter Sanford ind Bill Str rsser hrxe already left school for the serxrces soon to be Joined bv others of their tlrssmates Wherexer 'ind whenexer the members of Southold Hrgh hear the call of their country you may be sure that they will be ready to t rrry on their good work twenty th ree 1 . - ' ' I ' v 1 v ' 1, Y ' U Q 'Q ' ,, ' ' ' .
