al' Baseball LTHOUGH s1x men were lost from last years season xt was thought that S H S would be able to put a formldable team on the field Jack Tuthlll the veteran prtcher was count ed on to take good care of the hurlmg department w1th Henry Shlpuleskl as a rellef pltcher After a practlce game wxth Greenport a l1ne up was decxded upon Tuthlll was to pltch and Chester Skwara last years thlrd baseman was to catch Otls Davlds was selected to play first base and Henry Shxpuleskx held hxs last years post at second base Edward Drumm was chosen to play short wlth Halsey Goldsm1th and Antone Skwara avallable for the hot corner The outfield was to be composed of John Walters Robert Young John Harr1s Ted Doroskx and Fred Wxssemann W1th Tuthxlls good pltchmg and some tlmely hxttmg S H S won its first league game at Center Morxches wlth a score of 3 1 S H S won the next three league games from Eastport Hampton Bays and Brldgehampton by the scores of 11 0 8 3 and 12 0 Horseshoes A SCHOOL tournament was held wlth twelve players competmg Those who reached the finals were Otls Davlds Ted Doroskx, and Robert Glover but Glover defeated both to wm Because of a lack of mterest m thxs field, the county tourn ament has been d1scont1nued Mattxtuck who had won four and lost none h1t pltchmg The next game a w1n over Center MOflChES by a score of 8 4 brmgs our record up to date So with s1x of the ten games already won Southold leads the league and of the remamxng four games Mattxtuck alone seems hkely to gne the boys any real oppos1t1on The heavy hltters on the team so far have been Tuthlll Skwara Shxpulesk1 and Harr1s The other members of the team are lmprovmg the hlt tmg averages each game and the team as a whole xs functlomng well afield Barrmg accldents the lowest Southold should fimsh IS a txe for the champ1onsh1p The l1ne up used 1n most of the games fol lows Young lf Walters cf C Skwara c Ship uleskl 2b Tuth1ll p Harr1s rf A Skwara 3b Drumm ss Davlds lb substitutes T Doroskl H Goldsmxth W Cardmal F Wxssemann G Dxckerson and W Strasser Golf SINCE golf balls have been hard to get many schools have glven up golf Southold played only one match and defeated Shelter Island Matches are scheduled wnth Mattltuck and pos slbly Southampton The team IS composed of John Harr1s, Adam Kos, Henry Shlpuleskx and Jack Tuthxll thirty one -' , i i C 5 . Basketball A T times this year Southold played as well as any team we have had for seweral years Ill ness which kept two of our boys out of seveial games together w1th exceptionally stiff compet1 tion kept us from mak1ng a very lmpresslve re cord The first game of the season against Kmgs Park was poorly played but excltmg Goldle used almost all the men to find out what combmatxons would click Skwara scored 11 pomts as South old won 22 20 In the Greenport game we were at full strength The lineup was Skvx ara and Tuthill for wards Adamzevxch center Cardmal and Sanford gual ds Although losing to G eenport 38 29 South the last quarter Southold outclassed Southampton ID the first half but the opponents reserves gave them a 32 21 vlctory Tuthlll and Skwara co captams scored 19 pomts between them In the Hampton Bays game Cardlnal played center for the first time The team had Improved but tough luck on shots under the basket put our boys on the short end of a 34 30 score The Eastport game was the thrlller of the season Wlthout the services of Tuth1ll the boys played well and t1ed the score 1n the last few sec onds Southold scored three goals m an ox ertlme p911Od to w1n 30 24 Wlth Tuthxll still 1ll our team lost a close one to Shelter Island 34 33 In the next game Brldgehamptons Darden and Gleen had a field day and defeated us 41 27 Wlth Skwara scormg 23 pomts and Tuthlll thlrty back the team defeated Mattxtuck 49 32 Playing on the small dark Center Morlches court with the home te m playlnef one of 1ts best games Southold was beaten 41 26 Both teams scored well IH the Hampton Bays game but our defense was weak allowmg the op ponents to w1n 52 36 The Eastport game was a heartbreaker for us when wxth 5 seconds to play and one po1nt behind a shot was mlssed and Eastport won 34 33 Against exceptionally strong Greenport Class A champlons the boys played a great game Al though we lost 61 46 th1s was the highest score that was scored against Greenport thls year With Cardmal Skwara and Tut.h11l playlng mg Shelter Island 44 24 In the Bridgehampton game Southold held down the two players who had scored heav1ly be fore and as a result won 39 33 In the final game against Mattxtuck the loss of Cardmal on fouls 1n the start of the thlrd quar ter allowed Stovall of Mattltuck to score 16 pomts As a result Southold lost 33 26 Other members of the team who are not men txoned elsewhere but deserve credit are Fred Wlssemann Strasser Jermck and Goldsmith The Jayvees showed conslderable promlse thls year winning elght and loslng eight For the most part J Walters A Dickerson O D3V1dS and R Young played forward George Dickerson play ed center D MOTTIS A Skwara C Horton R Prlce J Machxnchlck and J Norklun played guard Mr W1l11ams and the boys deserve a lot of credit for their excellent record it . . , . - ' 1 . , p . Track RACK pract1ce was begun early 1n the spr1ng and several of the boys showed prom1se Those who showed up espec1ally were Curt Horton 1n the m1le and Ken Hagerman 1n the we1ghts The team also had some good veterans 1n Jack Tuth1ll Chester Skwara Fred W1ssemann Ted Bucc1 John WlSSem3DD B111 Card1nal Walter Sanford and Walter Adamzevlch The first contest was a tr1angular meet held at Southampton 1n WhlCh Greenport also part1c1 pated Southold garnered 18 pomts whxch was very good ID face of the strong C0mp8t1t1OH es pec1ally that of Southampton WhlCh IS a Class A school Southold won one first place 1n th1s meet and th1S was taken by J W1ssemann 1n the broad Jump The next meet was held at Westhampton Beach wlth the 1941 Class B champs They st1ll had a strong team and were favorltes to wm the champ1onsh1p aga1n th1s year Southold lost the meet but some of the boys showed much 1mprove ment The w1nners for Southold were AdamZeVlCh lh the hurdles and Horton 1n the m11e The team was handlcapped 1n these two meets because some of the boys were S1Ck or were workmg at home The final warmup for the county meet was held at Greenport The Porters came out the w1nners after a close contest IH WhlCh Southold thirty two led unt1l the last two events An odd1ty of th1s meet was a three way t1e among Fred and John W1ssemann and a Greenport man for first place 1n the hurdles Other firsts for Southold 1n th1s meet were taken by J Tuth1ll 1n the 100 Horton m the m1le C Skwara 1n the 440 Hagerman ln the shot and the medley team cons1st1ng of G D1ckerson Jack Tuth1ll Antone Skwara and Walt er Adamzev1ch Fred Wlssemann d1d honor to Southold Hrgh School at the forty first annual Suffolk County Track Meet held on May 23 1n Rwerhead H scored nearly half of the 21 poxnts won by South old Westhampton Beach H1gh School took first place 1n Class B Wlth Southold ty1ng wxth Bellport for second Westhampton had 3lV2 po1nts and Southold won 21 Fred W1ssemann took first place ln hurdles and broad Jump Southolds medley relay team cons1st1ng of Shorty Skwara George DICKBFSOH Jack Tuth1ll and Walter Adamzev1ch won second place John Wxssemann placed th1rd 1n the 220 yd low hurdles Curt Horton took fourth 1n the m1le race and George Dlckerson placed fourth 1n the 220 yd dash B111 Card1nal and Kenneth Hagerman took a th1rd and fourth ln the dlSCUS and shot respec tlVely 4 I ' . 1 1 4 a .f..s..i........ 1 , ' 1 fa , ' 1' ,- C , ..., ..
