Grades Seven and Erght HIS year the seventh grade organrzed rtself rnto the Young Amerrca Vrctory Club Its cf ticers are presrdent Jean Newbold xrce presrdent Emrly Kaelrn secretary Marjory McCaffery They campargned for tooth paste tubes but had to grve that up after the l'1w was passed con cernrng turnrng rn an old one when a full tube rs purchased Therr other patrrotrc work consrsted of leadrng a drrve for money for a McArthur ambu lance They had a Chrrstmas party rn Wh1Ch a play xr as presented Seventh grade also had an Arbor Day program vtrth storres and another play and orrgrnal poems For hrstory and geography pro jects the class collected prctures In art they made therr chref study the drawrng of brrds The marn actrvrtres of the erghth grade be gan rn December wrth a Chrrstmas party rn whrch grfts were exchanged On February 6 the grade adopted a constrtu tron rx hrch h rd been drawn up by the students ard later some by laws were passed 'Ihey also el cr ed the followrng officers presrd nt Wrllram Grr gonrs vrce presrdent Madelerne Donahue secre tary Vrrgmra Hunter Judge Joseph Rernhart at torney gener rl Spencer Petty On February 19 the erghth grade musrc class entertarned the seventh grade wrth a radro pro gr m On Arbor Day sex en students performed an other radro show for the rest of the class Durrng the year a record of the demerrts of each person was kept and the penalty for havrng twenty fixe or more per week was to wrrte a composrtron Thrs year the boys rn shop have been makrng model arrplanes as the government had requested The grrls rn therr home economrcs class sewed skrrts and dresses They have all been patrrot rcally salutrng the Hag every mor nrng before el rss Assembly Programs F a hrgh school student were asked what he would lrke most to happen durrng the day rn school he would surely answer an assembly pro gram Southold Hrgh was exceptronrlly fortun ate rn the programs presented thrs year The first speaker was Nrlkranth Chaxre '1 natrwe of Indra who recerx ed hrs educatron at Ox ford and at the Unrxersrty of Mrchrgan Mr Char re told the students about the home lrfe and govern ment of the mrllrons who rnhabrt Indra Mr Chat re brought wrth h1m some very beautrful preces of materrals which he draped Indran fashron on a few hrgh school grrls Albert Payne formerly a page boy rn the Unrted States Congress spoke later rn the year He presented a pages vrew of the Senate and House of Representatrves The pages run errands take phone calls and perform the many other tasks the Congressmen ask of them The pages go to school rn the basement of the Caprtol burldrng rt self Mr Payne related some rnterestrng tales about the rrxalry between the House and Senate pages Julra Shlemon came to tell the puprls of Southold Hrgh School about her home land Per sra Persra now called Iran has recently under lone some drastrc changes The unverlrng of vto men rs one of them Before 1936 all women had the r faces cox ered at all trmes Mrs Shlemon ex rr.: ted cm of th fine Persran handcraft whrch she has collected Among them were small rugs rnlayed Jewelry and hand hammered metal trays deprctrng ancrent scenes rn hrstory Mr Lane Newberry an Amerrcan artrst vrs rted the school wrth a group of hrs own orl parnt rn s on the Morman mrgr rtron He rs famous for hrs hrstorrcal parntrngs Mr Newberry explarned that rt must work It must be useful 'rs well as decor rtrxe Mrss Sybrl Shearer assrsted by Mrss Allrson Cho rte demonstrated the scenes backstage of the modern dance Th dancers performed and repre sented the symbols or rmrtatrons of objects rn lrfe such as the lrftrng of a derrrck or the swayrng of a tree rn the wrnd Mrss Shearer concluded her progr m wrth an amusrng dance Learnrng to Jrt terbuv by correspondence At Chrrstmas time a xery rnformal assembly rr as held The band played some numbers and 11 so accomp rnred the school body srngrng some car ols Santr then gate grfts to all students In the sprrng Burton L Jackson thrrlled the students wrth hrs marrmba an rnstrument srmrlrr 11 some wrys to the xylophone Mr Jackson played a xarrety of selectrons rncludrng some by B eh Mozart and present day composers Some of the scrence classes had the pleasure cf hearrng Sergeant Constance Weygand a former S H S student speak on the weather Conny pornted out that the scrence and math courses hare helped hrm rn hrs study of meteorology Thrs year the school had an excellent xarrety of entertarrm nt Each program has grren the students a peek rnto some drfferent field of art or educfrtron twenty three n . Latin Club HIS the ninth year of Latin Club has broueh wrth rt much emoyment for its members Much of its success IS due to the adviser Miss Dans and to the able staf'f of officers whlch were el cted 1n September The officers of the Senatores Latin Club are Consuls fPres1dentsJ Wrllram Albertson Margaret Jones Lrctor Walter Courtenay Quaest tor fTreasurerJ Jean Grattan Scrrbas 4Secretar IES, Margaret Beebe Nancy Tyler Parker Drck erson Cenatrrx Helen Goldsmith Thrs club has thrrty erght members The officers of the Plebs fLat1n IJ Club are Consuls Roger Grattan MarJor1e Beebe Lrctor John Moffat Quaestor Prrscllla Young Scrxbas CSecretar1esJ James Rlch Phyllis Horton Joan Newbold Cenatrlx Dorothy Young There are erghteen members ln th1s club In October the Senatores held a scavenger hunt The Lat1n I Club also had a scavenger hunt at this trme One fine morning rn December alarm clocks havrng been set the Senatores arose xery early and went on their annual serenadrng of the faculty French AST fall two French clubs were orgamzed wrth the help of the French teacher Mrss Haweelr The Senror French Club consrstrng f French II and III students elected the following as the1r officers presrdent Helen Goldsmith sec retary Margaret Grrgoms and treasurer Nancy Tyler The followrng officers were elected by the French I Club president Jean Grattan vice pres rdent Raymond Donahue secretary Margot Schmitt and treasurer Agnes Gadomskr These clubs were formed rn order that stu dents would understand and apprecrate better the Bachelor A YEAR ago last fall a group of fellows decided rt would be a n1ce thing to have some orgam zatlon rn vuhrch they might attempt to learn a few fundamentals rn th art of cookery Accordrngly the lnterested boys submrtted then- plans to the office vsrth Christmas carols Thls exent was termrnated by breakfast rn Teddys Sweete Shop Also rn December the Plebs had 1 Chrrstmrs party and evchanged grfts The Plebs made Latin Club song books rt the1r meetmgs Then IH March came the hrgh pomt of the years actlvrtles the Roman banquet complete wrth togas slaves and everyone recllnlng to eat Some of the Plebs were chosen to be slaves The consuls of the Plebs and two teachers were 1nv1ted to par take of the feast Between courses there w rs en tertarnment charades were acted out Vrrgrnra V111 played her accordran Vrncent Morrrs played the piano and a plano duet was played by Nancy Ty ler and Phyllis Horton On the twelfth and thirteenth of May the Plebs underwent the process of rnrtratron The succeeded rn the1r sole purpose of keepxng the Plebs rn mlsery th entire two days On the ex enrng of the second day the Plebs were formally recen ed 1nto the club Thus ended a very enjoyable year for ll concerned Cub French people and the1r language Also thls gave more opportunltres to play French games and srng French songs All meetmgs were conducted strlctly rn French as far as possible A hrghlrght of the Senror French Club was a supper party held on April 30 at whrch guests were 1nv1ted A feature of the French Club was the carrymg out of varrous proJects May 16 brought a big event the bus trrp to New York There the French Club xrsrted the Hayden Plane tarrum Central Park Zoo the Frlck Collectron and Modern Museum of Art where some French movles were shown and they ate rn a French res taurant Cub After study of th1s novel but practlcal rdea It was avreeably accepted The boys after much dellberatron decrded to chrrsten the newly form ed club Bachelor Club Bachelor Club' xx as to meet every Thursday and the weekly dues of ten cents were to be used m buying the cool-:mg materials From th1s tlme on the twenty five I , . 1 - .
