Due to the relatively small size of the school in comparison to larger high schools in the county, there were few winning years. Once in 1928, t e boys, team at Southmont was tied with Denton for the honor of being county champions. Such a rivalry existed between the two teams, that neither wanted to loseg therefore the tie was never played off. Members of the boys, team coached by Amos Rich in 1933 remain unidentified. Another set of winners was the 1936 girls' team, which became Davidson County semi- finalists that year. Members of the team were, left to right, Frances Beckner fFryJ, Virginia Penry fButtsD, Mary Elizabeth Surratt fI.ohrD, Maurice Wrenn f'l'annerJ, Dora Cook fParksJ, Miss Willie Lou McGhee Ccoachl, Maggie Lookabill, Hazel Monsees fMaconJ, Geneva Parks, Mary Belle Cook fBaileyJ, and Minnie Crowell fDavisD. Interest in basketball and baseball remained strong through the years. After the high school moved away in 1957, sports competition continued between Grade 7-8 teams at Southmont and other elementary schools in the county. In 1973, when the seventh grade was moved to Central Junior High, all school-sponsored sports ended. There continued to be active football, basketball, and softball teams in the community, sponsored by the Little League athletic program. 49
