ATHLETICS Athletic competition was an important extracurricular activity at Southmont School from 1921, when the first basketball teams were organized, until 1957, when the high school was moved to Central High School. In 1921, games were played on an outdoor court by the first girls' basketball team, which included, left to right, Kate Surratte fYorkJ, Lela Wyatt tLewisJ, Viola Lookabill fM1llerJ, Addie Surratt fRichD, and Irma Surratt fBoonel. Though Southmont, during its high school years, never had a football team, there was always a well-organized baseball team. The main sport, however, was basketball. Members of the 1924 boys' team were, left to right, Turner Wall, Ottis Hedrick, Noel Feezor, Claud Lassiter, Marvin Hedrick, and Fred Long. 48
