BUS DRIVERS With consolidation, came the need for bus service. In 1926, Southmont received two buses from the state-a Chevrolet, driven by Grover Wrenn, and a model-T Ford, driven by Wilbur Lookabill. In the early years, bus trips consisted of one stop. All the children in a community would gather at a central location. The youngsters in the I-lolloways area were transported to and from Holloways Church. Other areas, north and south of Southmont, had one pick-up location for the community. As service improved, students were taken onto the bus in neighborhoods. Small bus houses, to protect the children from the weather, were built every mile or two along the route. The bus made ten to twelve stops on a trip. Today, every child is picked up and delivered to his home. High school students have always driven buses at Southmont. In 1950, drivers were, left to right, Boyd Shirley, Ruby Clodfelter, Joe Moore, and Charles Sechriest. Transporting children to and from school this year are, left to right, Ricky Moretz, Mrs. Marsha Mauldin, Terri Owens, Amy Owens, and Allen Greer. 40

Youngsters, since 1967, receive Type A lunches in a Grade A rated building with modern facilities. Draperies at the windows, green plants, and artwork provide a pleasant atmosphere at lunchtime. Today, the lunchroom is capably operated by, left to right, Mrs. Madge Clark, Mrs. Tana Bullag Mrs. Arline Bulla, and Mrs. Willie Crowell, Manager. 39

CLUBS In 1951, there were six organized extracurricular groups-Student Council, Monogram Club, Glee Club, and Dramatics Club in high school, and Music Club and 4-H Club in the elementary grades. Interest groups centered around patriotism and the fine arts. Members of the 1951 Dramatics Club, left to right, included Joan Hunt, Doris Koontz, Mr. Bolick, Theresa Feezor, Peggy Hedrick, back row, Bobby Carrick, Bryce Daniel, Bob Beanblossom, Sonny Bolick, Tommy Warfford, and Joe Moore. In 1955, there was Music Club in the elementary grades, headed by Mr. W. A. Millier, the piano teacher. After 1957, the only organized activity in the elementary school was the Student Council. This organization continued until 1971, with spirited election of officers held each spring. Teachers in individual classrooms often conducted club activities in the areas of Reading and English. In 1976, Mrs. Parker reactivated interest in clubs. This year, there are eight clubs at Southmont. 41
