Lane fGrade 52. In 1914, with the opening of the Red Schoolhouse, there were five teachers, one for every two grades in the school. When the school moved into the new building in 1924, it was working toward a teacher per grade. This did not come about immediately. The community grew slowly, often there were combination classes. With the development of High Rock Lake, many permanent residents with school-age youngsters moved into the school district. By 1957, with the removal of the high school, there was a teacher in each grade, one through eight. With the addition of a kindergarten class in 1973, an extra teacher was assigned to the school. School enrollment has increased slowly but steadily. Today there are ten classroom teachers in five grades and kindergarten. One teacher is remembered for her extraordinary record of experience at Southmont. Mrs. Claytie Hedrick Feezor taught third grade from the fall of 1916 until she retired in the spring of 1963-a total of forty-five years at Southmont, with one year at Reeds School. 35
