In the fall of 1957, grades nine through twelve from Southmont, Linwood, Davis-Townsend, and Silver Valley Schools moved to the new consolidated Central High School. Southmont became an elementary school. Several changes took place in the building during the next few years. A large classroom behind the auditiorium was divided and converted into indoor bathrooms in 1965. Two years later, in 1967, a new lunchroom was built, with connecting walkway, to the north of the school. In 1973, the old auditorium was renovated and made into two classrooms to accommodate the new kindergarten program. During the 1970's, three more classes have moved away-the eighth grade in 1971, the seventh grade in 1973, and the sixth grade in 1977. Each time, steady increases in enrollment have absorbed the loss, keeping the school at its former size. Today, Southmont School consists of kindergarten through grade five. 17
