The first yearbook prepared by students at Southmont was published in 1948. It contained a valuable history of the schools at Southmont written by Mr. Willis, who had died in 1945. Fund-raising projects during this time included the sale of magazines and garden seeds, and chicken pie suppers were held in the lunchroom, sponsored by both the P.T.A. and the Senior Class. Highlights of the elementary grades that year included an operetta presented by the Fourth and Fifth Grades at the end of school and an egg hunt given to second graders on Easter Monday. First Graders with gerfelct attendance were eagerly awaiting the prize of a bantam hen, given annually by their teacher, Mrs. Reid mit . 13

Eleventh Graders, if they wished to have a high school diploma, had to return to school in the fall to complete the newly added Twelfth Grade. The Class of 1947 was therefore the first to go to school twelve years. Though there were only four members of the class, their record in higher education is outstanding. Three earned college degrees and one completed nurses training. Since Mr. Lackey was a full time teacher in addition to his duties as Principal, he found it more convenient to hold class in the Principal's Office. The homeroom of the Senior Class of 1947 was the office of the school. 12

The history ofthe Class of 1959 speaks of the large number of students who quit school-girls to get married, boys to go to work. Also remembered are day trips to Mirror Lake and Raleigh, and a weekend trip to Washington, D. C., as written by Bette Dickens, Class Historian. Bob Beanblossom, Historian of the Class of 1951, remembered how every member of the class failed the first English test during their Freshman year- thus starting the year with a bang. With the erection of a flagpole on the school grounds, Claude Graves and Ronald Carrick served as a committee to raise and lower the flag each day. 14
