The first Junior-Senior Banquet was given in 1938, to the Seniors by the upcoming Class of 1939. It was held in the Fourth Grade classroom just back of the auditorium. The Class of 1939lwas also first to wear caps and gowns at their graduation and first to select Senior Superlatives and have them printed and inserted in their diplomas. Mr. Willis enjoyed hearing this class sing. He would invite them to his home for singing sessions at which Mary, his cook, would prepare refreshments. In return for the pleasure they brought him, Mr. Willis sang a solo at the graduation exercises in 1939. 9

Willis took great pride in the school and its grounds. With his own labor, he planted beautiful flower beds and shrubs on the hillside above the ballfield. He set out the row of pecan trees around the circular drive in front of the school. Each year at Commencement, he gave a medal to the boy who had helped most with the upkeep of the grounds. In 1933, Clarence parks received the award. Many older men in the community can tell that once on the school grounds stood many oak trees whose stumps were dug out with ax and mattock by boys who broke some rule. During these years, the school was the center of social activity for the community. Special programs and presentations of live entertainment were regular Friday and Saturday night features enjoyed by young and old alike. 8

Before 1941, students who lived close to school went home for lunch. For others, box lunches were packed at home and carried to school. In the fall of 1941, a lunchroom was opened in a basement area between a laboratory area and the furnace room. Lunches were five cents each and tickets were sold in the classrooms each morning. At lunch time, recess, and end of school, Mr. Willis would go to the front steps, place his foot on the huge iron bell there, and give it a kick. Two loud peals would echo down the halls and across the playground, and blefore the first one had died away, an avalanche of students would pour through the door yelling at the tops of t eir voices. 10
