This room has continuously been used as a first grade classroom. In the fall of 1931, the well was drilled that yet supplies water for the school. Before that time, drinking water was obtained from a hand pump located on the edge of the playground. With water available, drinking lfjougtains were soon installed. In 1934, bathrooms with modern plumbing were built in back of the school ui ing. 7

The Red Schoolhouse was used only ten years-a short life for a school building. It served, from 1924 until 1932, as a home for students who lived some distance from the school. Mr. and Mrs. Willis lived upstairs until the teacherage was built in 1931. The Class of 1924 was the last group of students to finish their schooling in the Red Schoolhouse. On Commencement Day, May 8, 1924, they went into the newly completed auditorium of the new brick building for graduation exercises. r 6 Ui

Willis took great pride in the school and its grounds. With his own labor, he planted beautiful flower beds and shrubs on the hillside above the ballfield. He set out the row of pecan trees around the circular drive in front of the school. Each year at Commencement, he gave a medal to the boy who had helped most with the upkeep of the grounds. In 1933, Clarence parks received the award. Many older men in the community can tell that once on the school grounds stood many oak trees whose stumps were dug out with ax and mattock by boys who broke some rule. During these years, the school was the center of social activity for the community. Special programs and presentations of live entertainment were regular Friday and Saturday night features enjoyed by young and old alike. 8
