's in essence, a history of ideas. U Herbert George Wells SOCIAL STUDIES If it's a knowledge of our country and world that he is looking for at S.H.S., the social studies department supplies the student with a compre- hensive held of instruction. The Hrst courses offered the student, Ancient History and Civics, make him aware of past civili- zations, and their importance. Modern and World History, both offered to the student's in his second year, are concerned with events of major importance in economics and politics and other countrys' culture and values. Also included is Economic Geography which provides a back- ground to their economic systems and environ- ments. In the third year, United States History is the required course for all students. The course is an important one, since its full emphasis is put on the American society and its history. In the last year, Sociology and Problems of American Democracy are the courses offered. They give us a deeper understanding into the motivations of society. All the history courses are closely related and the student should be able to apply his know- ledge and increase his understanding of the world as it is now, thus making him a true citizen of his country and the world. , ' .K WT Q. spzres towards the condition of music. Walter Pater The Band begins practice by playing Warm up, Tune up. MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music department has been characterized by a vast increase in enrollment during the past few years. An ever expanding program is keeping pace with the increase. Students first entering the high school have five subjects offered to them in this department. Beginners Band, a full credit subject, is for those who are desirous of learning to play a brass or reed instrument. For the more-experienced musi- cians, Band and Orchestra, both full credit courses, are offered. The band lists marching and assemblies among its outside activities, while the orchestra performs at concerts and special as- semblies. Mixed Chorus and Girl's Chorus are offered to all students, placement depending on ability. Meeting twice a week, these are half-credit sub- jects. The students enrolled are required to at- tend and perform at concerts. Iuniors and Seniors may take Music Apprecia- tion, which covers the history and theory of music. Like all other courses offered by the music department, Conrad A. Gozzo teaches Music Ap- preciation. Mr. Gozzo directs a Band rehearsal
