ANNA FONTANA Mrs. Fontana, head of the Business depart- ment, is 'in her eighteenth year of teaching at Southington High School. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree at Boston University. She teaches classes in Shorthand and Secretarial Oflice Practice. Mrs. Fontana is the advisor to the local chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. This year she was nominated for the New England Business 'Teacher of the Year Award, truly great honor for so dedicated a teacher. JAMES F. MATHEMATICS Math is a dynamic department. There is no exception here at Southington. These revolutions have not changed the basics of mathg rather they have strengthened the bond between its con- cepts and life. Many students and teachers alike, have found this transition to new approaches a diflicult one to undergo. It has required, in some instances, a reversal of the reasoning they have long been accustomed to employing. Yet these difficulties cannot keep math from surging forward. The numerous math courses at Southington include subjects from Business Math to Trigono- metry. The modern world has enlarged the need for a sound math background. In order to simplify the taking of dictation, the student is offered training in the language of signs and symbols. He is also offered a course in bookkeeping and in the adept operation of oflice machines. In office practice, the business students put this knowledge to the test. Not only does the business department pre- pare the interested student for a career in the business world, but it also aids in the production of the Emblem, the school newspaper. MRS.
