English 1, II H . . . to speak, to write, to The English Department, the largest in the school, includes three types of four year courses. Academic English, planned for college bound students has an emphasis on American and English literature and writing as a means of expression. Standard English is similiar to Academic English in course content but it differs in that it serves a wider range of students. General English stresses grammar and writing. In 1962, two electives were added to the English Curriculum. Creative Writing is offered to seniors with an eighty-live average or higher in English. This course gives specialized training in the rudiments of rhetoric. AVIS M. CHURCHILL Mrs. Churchill is presently in her eighth year of teaching at Southington High. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Colby College and her Master of Arts Degree at the University of Maine. Heading the English department, she teaches Senior Classes in English.
