At Southington High School the future secretary gains the basic skills and necessary background to enter the business world. Courses in shorthand introduce her to a fascinating new language of signs and symbols to simplify the taking of dictation, while bookkeeping trains her to keep complex financial records. She learns to skillfully operate ofiice machines such as electric type- writers, calculators and duplicating machines, while she learns the importance of a background in Economics. She puts all this knowledge together in her Oflice Practice class where actual working conditions are simulated. Room 110 is truly a Business World on the student level. Faculty requests, Emblem production, and the general bustle of students working to meet deadlines, form some of the main points of activity. At least one third of the class of 1964 is enrolled in at least one business subject. Since 1959, the Department Staff has increased from two to six teachers. More and more recognition is being given to the Business Depart- ment as it increases in importance to all SHS students. f filer f , f . f ff' Tw, 4 f,ff,f,,,, Yi? 31 ff' if 5.
