Since Sputnik and the rapid chain of events which swept us into the space age, science has expanded its foothold in secondary school education. From a position of relative unimportance and neglect to a position of priorityg that's the story of science - at Southington and throughout the nation. Science is a four year program at Southington High. Freshmen are offered introductory courses in Earth Science and General Science. As sophomores they study the structure, reproduction, growth, and classification of plants and animals along with their evolutionary signi- ficance-biology. The Junior and Senior years are devoted to the lab sciences, Chemistry, advanced biology, and phy- sics. The atomic theory, ionization, electricity, light, radio- activity, along with basic mechanics are taught in an in- creasingly complex display of scientific method and prin- ciple. Science at Southington is expanding, broadening and overflowing with students of promise and ability. In the past few years the prominence of some noteworthy members has gained our school state and national recognition. We have had two National Science Fair winners and we carry away high honors at the State Fair every year. Science at Southington is moving forward and there are no signs of it slowing down. f x E ,yff,,f f-w j. if' 4 1'f...--J .4 ,,-Q f-Q ,, L 1 ' ...WV ,V , 55 ..,.,, W ..,, ,, , 1, -ao 1 -f' VY-i f - 1, f 6'The development of science and of creative activities requires an inward freedom. 54, V I I 1 wzfvrxmmizwmw-Mona, Miss Nellie Shepard
