FRESH FROSH We, the Class of 1963, began our Freshman Year thoroughly familiar with the building and well-versed in school regulations having been the last group to at- tend the high school as eighth graders. Unfortunately, we were also well known and easily recognized by the Seniors, a prominent disadvantage at initiation time! Sore knees from kneeling and tired arrns from carry- ing tons of books were constant companions in those early days of high school. Under the leadership of Andrew LaPorta CPres.l, Lor- etta DePaolo QVice-Pres.j, Alberta DeLuco QSect.j, and Marcia Masthay CTreas.j, we entered the social life of Southington High School on December 12, 1959 with a dance called HMistletoe Hopf' The An- nual Magazine Drive offered us an opportunity to dis- play our spirit which we quickly did by snatching First place. With success in our pocket, our Freshman Year per- fected the techniques of operating as a unified class. SUCCESSFUL SOPHS Sophomore Year was ushered in by the election of class officers. Joan Hobson fPres.j, Loretta DePaolo QVice- Presb, Alberta DeLuco fSect.j, and Marcia Masthay QTreas.j, were selected to guide future activities. The Executive Board was also chosen with Janet Corbin presiding as chairman. Cn January 7, 1961, we greeted the new year with 'The Hoppin, New Year Hopf! The All-Star Basket- ball Game was sponsored jointly by the Class of 1963 and by the Southington Police Benevolent Association. The Magazine Drive again challenged, and we again claimed first place. At the Magazine Drive Jamboree, our skit, representing a beatnik version of our recent accomplishment, earned thirty dollars for our treasury by placing first. Attention was next focused on the selection of the cheerleading squad for the coming year. Janet Corbin was chosen from among ten other candi- dates to reign as queen over the activities of South- ington High's Homecoming. Arlene Bouchard and Al- berta DeLuco served in the court of the queen. Co- captains for the cheerleading squad for the coming year were Miriam Landino and Lynn Podolak. The April induction of the National Honor Society re- sulted in the selection of twenty-one Juniors. Members are chosen on the basis of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Plans for Senior Year prompted the election of Arlene Bouchard and Bob Bafuma as co-editors for our year- book, the Chronicle. Lynne Podolak was elected as chairman of the Executive Board. The election of oflicers for the Student Council brought a whirl of speeches, posters, and significant bells on the voting machines. The participation of a large percentage of the student body in the voting chose Roger Binkerd as President, Janet Corbin as Vice-president, Alberta DeLuco as Secretary and Savin Ungaro as Treasurer. A successful year of activity and ccomplishment was completed. The long-awaited Senior Year was in reach. ACCOMPLISHED SENIORS Senior Year officially opened with the election of class officers. Not only does the Emblem provide students with reading material about their school, but it also sponsors other projects. The Emblem, along with the Student Council, sponsored the annual Talent Show. A new look this year was the balloting for a Valentine king and queen by the use of pennies. Our school paper helped to promote this project and en- courage all students to take part.
