R54ifiwwrvirvlc-it:wmaI -wi-r ef 'P U5 W 2.1 CITIZENS OF THE WORLD UNITE 45 The world is demanding from us, the class of 1961, a sense of recognition and Q equality. Gur goals and interests as citizens of an aroused world must meet the challenge of man and all his diversities, aware that only on the surface men are unrelated. In other ,V words we must adopt the unifying thread of citizenship, which initiates responsibility, intelligent activity, and compassion for mankind as contained within the doctrines of Democracy. 5 Knowledge gained through education from one's family, school, religion, and friends c is a key factor. Through experience and self realization evolve values and personal codes of behavior. This is philosophy. Since it is the directing influence in one's life, philosophy must encompass the fact that every member of society exerts a social, economic, if or political force upon those about him, and therefore enters within the realm of uni- versal concern. Vast resources of human achievements and ideas are often unrecognized so they stagnate and disappear while many problems are left to fester, and finally erupt into boiling resentment because of prejudice, self-interest, fear, and ignorance. We, as young jg, Americans, must correct these errors before the wold destroys itself in misunderstanding and hate. gfff The great conllict between Democracy and Communism has forced the United States to fight for its ideals and very existence through our industrial, intellectual, and humanitarian endeavors. However, Democracy itself supplies enough goals for men to strive for without the threat of world-wide totalitarian citizenship. We must not fail this great challenge, because if we do the idea of Democracy will fall into oblivion with us. The fight for the recognition of the dignity of man, created in the image of God, must not cease until this truth is universally accepted as reality. We are the hope, faith, and proof of freedom. We must not fail.
