R54ifiwwrvirvlc-it:wmaI -wi-r ef 'P U5 W 2.1 CITIZENS OF THE WORLD UNITE 45 The world is demanding from us, the class of 1961, a sense of recognition and Q equality. Gur goals and interests as citizens of an aroused world must meet the challenge of man and all his diversities, aware that only on the surface men are unrelated. In other ,V words we must adopt the unifying thread of citizenship, which initiates responsibility, intelligent activity, and compassion for mankind as contained within the doctrines of Democracy. 5 Knowledge gained through education from one's family, school, religion, and friends c is a key factor. Through experience and self realization evolve values and personal codes of behavior. This is philosophy. Since it is the directing influence in one's life, philosophy must encompass the fact that every member of society exerts a social, economic, if or political force upon those about him, and therefore enters within the realm of uni- versal concern. Vast resources of human achievements and ideas are often unrecognized so they stagnate and disappear while many problems are left to fester, and finally erupt into boiling resentment because of prejudice, self-interest, fear, and ignorance. We, as young jg, Americans, must correct these errors before the wold destroys itself in misunderstanding and hate. gfff The great conllict between Democracy and Communism has forced the United States to fight for its ideals and very existence through our industrial, intellectual, and humanitarian endeavors. However, Democracy itself supplies enough goals for men to strive for without the threat of world-wide totalitarian citizenship. We must not fail this great challenge, because if we do the idea of Democracy will fall into oblivion with us. The fight for the recognition of the dignity of man, created in the image of God, must not cease until this truth is universally accepted as reality. We are the hope, faith, and proof of freedom. We must not fail. SENIOR CLASS UFFICERS Dear Classmates, The time has now come for us to face the future of which we are an integral part. After twelve years of education, we must assume our position in society. We are the young adults of the world and it is our task to make the future a bright and prosperous one. Though it will be the greatest task which we shall have to face, it will be a challenge which, I feel, we are well prepared to meet. To serve as your class president for four years was an honor and a great experience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your cooperation in our many class endeavors. It was you who made them worthwhile and successful. In closing I would like to say that life is a wonderful experience so before you do anything which might hurt it, stop and think for a moment. Whcuin are you going to hurt by what you might do? God put you here for some reason so, to the best of your ability, help yourself and I-Iim by attaining your goal in life. May God bless you. SEPTEMBER 1959 Well, finally We can be called up- perclassmen. The first thing the class of 61 undertook was the election of Ann Marie Tarfano as president, Fred Eckart as vice-presi- dent, Nicole Darling as secretary, and Patty, Manware as treasurer. Chosen for this honor were Dom Mongillo and Ann Marie Tarfano. CURLY COMES AND GOES This time we placed fourth in the annual magazine drive. I have a sneaky feeling that it was due to the letdown the Juniors received when they were told that they could- n't sell candy during cafeteria period. COLLEGE HERE WE COME Under the direction of Polly Delahunty and Mr. Padden, the Junior Show, Good News , was held on April 29 and 30, 1960. Once again Ann Marie Tarfano was our president and Fred Eckart our vice-president. Our new secretary was Ronnie Mirisola and Patty Manware had the job of col- lecting dues. Mr. Padden was still our advisor. HOTDOGS - HOTDOGS Because of our lean treasury the Senior class took on the task of selling hotdogs, etc. at the football games. This added S200 to our treasury. TO SPARK THE TEAM The Senior Cheerleaders who worked hard for our boys were co- captains, Valerie Stetson and Claudia DellaBitta, along with Marcia Lewis, Midge DellaVecchia, and Cheryl Lawson. SENIOR PLAY Our Senior Play, The Male Ani- mal, was held on December 2 and 5, 1960. Under the direction of Mr. Padden and the co-chairmen, Bob Foley and Marilyn Wentworth, the play resulted in a success as usual. SENIOR FIRST The Senior class held the first Alumni Ball at Southington High School on December 17, 1960. HOMECOMI NG During Homecoming week, elections were held to determine our new Homecoming queen. Along with Sally, four others were chosen to escort her in the parade before the game on Saturday. The top five girls were announced at the dance on Friday night which was a wonderful affair even though the poor football players had to get their beauty sleep by leaving early. The team climaxed the weekend with an impressive win over Croft 51-30. Special thanks are in order for Mr. john Fontana who was in charge of organizing the entire event.
