LAWRENCE MUCCI, because you believe that knowledge is the key to the future. Although you teach only senior and junior subjects, the complete science and mathematics department is under your direction. You had stimulated these courses long before Sputnik and the Russian threat was publicized. It is your belief that we should learn things to the Nth degree. You have instilled within us the initiative, ambition, and desire that is so essential to attain success. For this we express our sin- cere gratitude. 0:2555 , .k N MJ A Qflm f ' a M55 .3 A ' 'wltfm V f ,, ,,,..w.u.a sax, , ., -wm-Mmm-ww.-m-vmm-mwn--N-.-- ,fag k ' Q K .L-'1:y.'1mf.iPfZ'LT:,f:.Ziff TKQFQ -. - wk lt. is wi wa T V, . ...tx OUR THANKS T0 YOU . . . Widmout the guidance and concern of you, Mr. Raymond Joyal, both as our yearbook ad- visor and as a teacher, we could not have en- joyed the success which we have had. This year- book is a result of your ever existing patience, time, and perseverance. You have helped the stalf of the yearbook tremendously, and we are very grateful for it. ' ia-sum' lofi!-1865 MR. ROBERT DeBISHOP In no way can we as seniors give the thanks which are due to our class advisor. You have been with us for these last two years. During that time you have put much of your time and energy into helping us. This includes our shows, proms, dances, and our treasury. Whenever we had to do something you were always there, most of the time before we were. We will take this opportunity to tell you how much we ap- preciate it and to say, Thank you very much, we will never forget it. Our principal and assistant principal, Mr. D'Angelo and Mr. Gasecki, have been in their present positions for only two years, and they have executed their oflices exceptionally well to be most beneficial to the school. Our guidance oflicer, Mr. Walsh, was new this school year and has done excellent work with the students, especially with the seniors. All three of the secretaries were also new to their positions. Nevertheless, even though the administration and staff were relatively new, our school is enjoying conditions which were un- thought of a few years ago. We have certainly pro- gressed. 1. Ml ve. FRESHMEN 1956-1957 We started off as high school students by being initiated by the Seniors. Who could ever forget the crazy antics we had to perform! Our first election for class officers was held early in the year, with Robert Garry as President, Philip Gregoretti as Vice-President, Patricia Porriello as Secretary, and Herbert Varley as Treasurer. Our class advisor was Mr. Terek. We were young, inexperienced, and new to the school, but we soon fell into the groove of activities. The first time we participated in the school's annual Magazine Drive we came in third. We were well represented at the Senior Valentine Dance by our pages, Anne Goggin and Herbert Varley. But, all too soon our year of no Worries, fun, and leisure was ended. SOPHOMORES, 1957-1958 The class of 6O, now Sophomores, was excited to get back to school. This was the year our activities started. Our well- chosen oflicers for that year were: President, Robert'Garry, Vice-President, Robert Cusano, Secretary, Anne Goggin, and Treasurer, Mary Lou Fiorillo. Mr. DeFabo was our class ad- visor. We started the year with a dance entitled the Sweater Hop, which proved to be successful and enjoyable. The Magazine Drive was once again under way, and we came in fourth this time. Our pages for the Valentine Dance were Patricia Porriello and Fran Kenefick. . Our biggest project of the year was the annual Sophomore Review. This was usually a talent show, but the Class of 60, showing its first signs of non-conformity, decided to put on au operetta. It was called 'Carmelitaj' with Lucille Verderame and Philip Gregoretti as co-chairmen, and was under the capable and excellent direction of Mr, DeFabo. gi K. x. X X fix, , The cast of the Junior Show gather for final bow. This show turned out to be one of the most outstanding, most successful and most enjoyable performances in the school's history. It will always be remembered for its gorgeous scenery, costumes, and enchanting music. Who will ever forget Viva, Viva, Viva . . . it is Fiesta time! It was really a fabu- lous show. Our Sophomore year soon came to an end, but the memories of that carefree year will linger on. JUNIORS 1958-1959 As Juniors we were considered upperclassmen, it was a long struggle, but we were there and we made the most of it. Officers for our junior year were: Robert Garry-President, Robert Cusano-Vice President, Lucille Verderame-Secetary, and Mary Lou Fiorillo-Treasurer. Mr. DeBishop was our class advisor and helped us very much through the year. The junior girls chosen as cheerleaders did a peppy job of cheer- ing the boys on to victory. Candy sales began early in the year, with several Juniors helping to sell candy during their lunch period. In early' fall we sponsored a dance called the Half and Half which was part square dancing and part social danc- ing. This proved to be successful from the turnout and it also aided our treasury. On December 6, 1958, one of the most important events of our junior year arrived. This was our junior Prom entitled Enchanted Island, with Sheila Sawyer and David Ballou as co-chairmen. These able students and the various committees worked hard to make this prom the best ever-with the won- derful results. Approximately 80 couples attended, all enjoy- ing the music and admiring the beautiful decorations, set in a misty, fairyland theme. The King and Queen chosen for the prom were Philip Gregoretti and Toni Giammatteo. ' 1 QQ ' if i 3, X-fx' The Can-Can xuflfaj I i s . Junior Recital participants. Left to right: 1. In early winter rehearsals began for our junior show. Still non- conformists, the junior class de- cided to have a show other than the usual minstrel. Putting our heads together, we decided upon a show called Around the World in 8 Acts, with Paula Guerin and Rob- ert Henderson as co-chairmen, and directed by Mr. DeBishop. Eight different countries were represented by a short skit or act. The countries were England, Sweden, Italy, France, Russia, japan, Egypt, and the Uni- ted States. Remember the Can-Can girls who were always CPD in step? And what about John, the Bermuda- clad bartender and the small bot- tle of beer? This show certainly gave us memories never to be for- gotten. All of these events gave us pleasure and happiness, yet we had serious thoughts too. A class ring committee was chosen, and a few months later our rings were pur- chased. We kept up our studies, trying ever so hard to make the Honor Roll. Several of the honor students were rewarded for their work and studies by being initiated into the National Honor Society. This was an important and honor- able event for the 23 students sel- ected. Our pages to the Valentine Dance that year were Gail Ross and Ralph Peterutti. The annual Maga- zine Drive found us in 3rd place. The junior Recital was held in the Spring. Those who won this speak- ing prize were: first, David Balloug second, Paula Guerin, and third, Robert Carbone. At the end of our junior year Ronald Borgio and Dor- een DiMartino were selected as co- editors of the Chronicle. Girls' and Boys' State participants were also selected. They were Lee Berg, Paula Guerin, David Ballou, and Richard Ralston. Before we realized it sum- mer was near, and our exciting Junior year was coming to a close. But we eagerly anticipated the fol- lowing year-our Senior year. f X SENIORS 1959-1960 Our Senior year, the year we all looked forward to, finally arrived. We were THE upperclassmen, but with many responsibilities. Class Of- ficers for this year were President- Mary Lou Fiorillo, Vice-President- Robert Cusano, Secretary-Lucille Verderame, and Treasurer-Paula Guerin. Once again, we had Mr. DeBishop as our advisor. Our round of numerous activities began as soon as we got back to school. Our non-conforming class held a Welcome Dance in early September, rather than the annual initiation dance usually held. Mapy students attended this dance rand had loads of fun. The Senior girls on the cheerleading squad were Lee Berg, Mary Ann Cibula, Toni Giam- marteo, Gail Ross and Nathalie Serafino. Our class was well repre- sented in the various athletic teams. Our Senior class, along with the Music Club, sponsored the Home- coming Dance, held at the end of Homecoming Week in October. At this dance the Homecoming Queen was announced: she was Valerie Stetson, a junior. The Senior can- didates for Homecoming Queen were Sharon Brady, Mary Ellen Cupina, Marion Mirisola, Patricia Porriello, Gail Ross, and Lucille Verderame. Soon casting began for the Senior Play, No Boys Allowed. Rehear- sals were held after school for weeks, but all the practice proved worthwhile. The show, performed November 20, and 21, was a tre- mendous success. The fabulous Class of 60 did it again! Another suc- cessful production was added to their collection. 7133-,S .ITCTNJ ' 1 I llflllf 4 I The girls insist, No Boys Allowed! ' ra, we .K---, . M...-a-., wg 2? 'ge .521 -1 yr. .Y -v ki' 1. Midnight strikes again 1 Q4 s ,.- ' .us ,-in is l so It was a wonderful year filled with homework and activities. Many V seniors participated in the various clubs and sports at S.H.S. and the CHRONICLE committees were working feverishly. The annual D.A.R. award was presented to Lucille Verderame, an outstanding and well deserving senior. The next school event of the seniors was the Christmas Ball. None of us will forget the fun and excitement of that night. The seniors had a serious side, too. Many were applying to college or seeking positions after graduation. We are all looking forward to the 1 years of the future. As seniors we had three more scoial events and graduation to put on before we left Southington High for good. The Valentine Dance was gay and lively, as was the atmosphere of the Senior Prom. And to top it off we had class night and the long awaited graduation. Membership is based on four outstanding qualities of the student: Scholarship, Lead- ership, Character, and Service. Students are further qualified if they excel in Leadership, Character, and Service, as estimated by fellow students and faculty members. Those students elected are then informed at an assembly which is followed by a solemn, impressive, induction ceremony in which the students take the National Honor Society oath and receive pins.
