CLASS HISTORY These last four years, which were a very important part of our lives were not unlike the seasons, each year brought a different season. The spring of our high school educa- tion was our freshman year. We were young and inexperienced, life was just starting for us with all its joys and problems. The sophomore year can be termed our summer. We were getting used to things and having a ball, besides doing our work. The junior year is similar to the autumn, we were maturing, slowly becoming adults. We had fun, but we also realized the importance of work and study. The senior year is like a winter. The students no longer tend to be so light headed or childish, but instead they display some composure, most of the students are mature individuals, responsible and more independant than before. But like all winters, our senior year will give way to another spring. All of us will be entering a new life, in college, training or at work, thus beginning another series of seasons. FRESHMAN YEAR Spring Our springtime would, of course, be our freshman year. It started with a bang for us as we were formally received into Southington High at the last of the truly hardy Frosh Welcome Dances. Few will forget that experience. The next big thing was our first taste of victory in the Magazine Campaign, with Sue Prevost as our top Salesman. Can you imagine that, those little freshmen won, was heard all over the school. Donna Velodota, Gail DeLuco, Barb Stasilowicz, Ruth DePaolo, Lois Pritt, Hail Carmody, Alice Keegan and Rosemary DeFeo were the ones who formally cheered our freshman players. Our class officers, with the help of Mr. Woolaver, our class advisor, started us off right in our quest to be a class that S.H.S. would not soon forget. These officers were Eleanor Riera, President, Bert Fasulo, Vice President, Diane Mongillo, Secretary and Alice Keegan, Treasurer. After this rousing and vigorous year, we were then ready to enter the summer of our high school years, as sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR Summer Another year, another season. In our sophomore year, we, the students of the class of '59, decided to have a little more excitement under the leadership of Eleanor Riera as President and Bert Fasulo as Vice President. Alice Keegan had the money problems for our class Treasury, and Diane Mongillo was the Secretary, Of course, Miss Shorey was involved in all our problems and joys since she was our class advisor. We held our first dance Nov. 3rd, but the real thrill of the season was our Spotlight Revue. Mr. Brian was the one who pulled us through that. We really had a workout for that show, and yet, many couldn't reach that high note in Oklahoma if their life depended on it fit didj. We were all quite proud of ourselves. Later that year the Daisy Mae Dance was held with the Sharptones as the main attraction. The last big event of that season was our victory in the magazine campaign A We came in first place!! 40 JU 1oR YEAR Fall As we enter our fall or our junior year it is with no little regret that we look back at our first two years at S.H.S. How soon that tremendously long span of time the four years of high school have been cut in half. Now we are upper classmen, as upper classmen we have many proud accomplishments on our slate, but being very determined to leave an untarnished record for our class of '59, we poured our efforts into some very worth while endeavors. This year Bert Fasulo took over as President with Harry Willis as Vice President, Diane Mongillo as Secretary and Rose Ann Pepe as Treasurer. Five of our junior girls are representing the school on the cheerleading squad. They areg Bertha Brunelli, june Bell, Hail Carmody, Barbara Stasilowicz, and Donna Velodota. Carol Ursone and Bert Fasulo with the help of various committees arranged our beautiful junior prom, Stairway to the Stars. The band was dreamy and everyone thpught the decorations were beautiful. Nancy Taylor and her escort Dave Basco were chosen as King and Queen and everyone enjoyed an unforgetable evening. Once again we came in first in the Magazine Campaign, our treasury is really grow- ing. We are the richest class the school has ever seen. Shandra Mongillo and Roger Niland step into the spotlight next as co-chairmen of the junior Minstrel, With the aid of Mr. Bryan they put together a terrific show. Our class had fun presenting the Minstrel and all who attended enjoyed the songs and also the wit of the endmen. A One of the most signincant events of all your high school years happens during your junior year. That time that is second only to graduating itself, the first time you wear your school ring. It is a symbol of all the work and happy memories that you will have throughout your life to save in recognition of Southington High School. By now many of our boys have really taken their places in our varsity teams. Our class is represented strongly in every sport at S.H.S. It is almost impossible to believe that now we are ready to become the leaders of the school. As many of our classmates stand ready to take over the handling of the school. It is with many valuable memories and experiences that we leave our junior year and become seniors. What other year could possibly make us so busy? The members of the senior class are wrapped up in numerous dance, play, Chronicle and club committees not mentioning sports, homework, and other outside activities that are really keeping us so busy! The single session and the new addition made our last year even more different from all our other years. We're all quite proud to think that our class would be the first to graduate in the new auditorium. The first big event was, of course, the Freshman Welcome Dance. Most of the seniors got a big bang out of being Social Dictators for a couple of days. Drunk with power was an often heard quote. While having this fun, we conducted ourselves as mature students, so the dance was quite successful. Work on the Chronicle was begun the first day of school, with Rose Ann Pepe and Alan Klopfenstein and the staff putting a lot of eHort into this book to make sure it's the best S.H.S. has ever put out! Early in the year preparations for graduation had begun - we were soon measured for caps and gowns . . . fwe soon found out just how fat a head we really had l lj A great number of school clubs were led by senior members. These were the Presidents of Future Nurses, Charlene Buteau, Future Teachers, Janice Rackerg Senior Secretarial Club, Teddy Breault, National Honor Society, Harry Willis, G.A.A., Marion Wright, Student Council, Sheila Degnan. Also, Bill Thomasino was editor of the Emblem and Gail DeI.uco editor of the Crusader. ...B L14 4 The Christmas Ball was the next big event in our lives as seniors. This dance will probably be remembered with many happy memories. Along with the college entrance exams, assorted term papers and the like, the try- outs for the Senior Play were held. Kurt johnson as jocko will always be remembered, not only for his costume, but also for his most famous lines aaaaahhhhh! Others in the cast were Elaine Mestey, Carolyn Pignet, Roger Niland, .Phyllis Higginston, jackie Niles, Bob Brenner, jack Fontanella and Paul Francis. The play committees also did a tremen- dous job, as did the cast. Carolyn Luty won the Betty Crocker Future Homemaker Award. The D.A.R. good citizenship award was given to jackie Niles. We were all proud of them both. Hearts, hearts, hearts. That is all the committees for the Valentine Dance saw for days. But it was worth it! The Valentine Dance was such fun. The music was so nice, and the decorations, so pretty. This is our last dance for a while, until our Prom. But it's not just homework, research, dances and committees that make the senior year exciting, but it's the inner excitement. There are those constant undertones of thrilling experiences, expectant outcomes, impatient waiting for those final days of graduation. The senior year is like winter - the last season of the year. One of maturity and composure and apparent relaxation on the outside - yet inside there is the cheery bustling, preparing for spring. Yes, preparing for spring, after graduating we'l1 all be starting a new year, another beginning, a new volume of life. The Chronicle is one of the most treasured possessions of each Senior. Years from now we will look back to the memories of our high school days by picking up our 59 yearbook and looking through it. Hours of hard work and planning have gone into this book but everyone did their job well. Early in the year contracts were signed with T. O'Toole and Sons, Qprintersj and Loring Studios, official photog- raphers. Two deadlines had to be met. The first was in STUDENT COUNCIL january and the second in March. Without the untiring efforts of Mr. loyal, our year- book would not have been such a success. The co-editors began work the first day of school in the new Chronicle Room. Page after page was planned until finally the book was completed. Class Night the yearbooks were distributed to the Seniors and a sigh of relief was heard from the Chronicle Staff.
