V Q...-t.....f...,-. .. ....- .nd pl 0f0glfLQ It is proper and customary at the beginning of n book, especially one of an historical nature, for the authors to give the render ti brief idea of what they are trying to express. ln this volume we have sought to tell as clearly and impartially as possible the story of our class from the earliest records of our existence to the present, here within the walls of S.H.S. lf some of our recol- lections have been colored by time, this must be expected, and the render should make an attempt to bear with us. So saying, we give to you, we Cdronick 7957 for-efienfecl gy jhe Senior Cfada SOUTHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Southington, Connecticut CLASS MOTTO LOOK BACKWARD WITH PRIDE, President ....., Vice-President Secretary .,..,........ ADVERTISEMENTS Miss Sophie Ramondetta Mr. Craig Matheson lalareciafion i Throughout our four years in high school, we have been very fortunate in having the guidance of three wonderful advisers: Mr. Craig Matheson, our Freshman and Sophomore adviser, who is now teaching at Vloodbury, Con- necticut, Mr. James Mariconda, our junior adviser, who is now teaching in Greenport, Long Island, and Miss Sophie Ramondetta, Senior class adviser, who is a member of the English Department at Southington High. They have always been very patient with us, and have taken a sincere in- terest in our class. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the help they have given us, and we hope that in the years to come we can make them proud of us. Our thanks also to Mr. Bryan, for his help and direction with our class activities during our years at Southington High. s 4 Mr. James Mariconda .,.-...f-.--.-H Y..-- +-A-A ----- --f-V -ag -'Z --4 le l,CCl,fL0l'l It is with sincere appreciation for your untiring efforts in the field of sports that the class of '57 dedicates the Chronicle to you, Mr. Orsene. You have been with our class the five years we have attended South- ington High School. You have been more than just a teacher and coach to the boys -you have been a friend. You have tried to instill in the minds of the boys you taught and coached the fine qualities which have made you a successful coach. On the seventh day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and fifty-three, we were called to the court of King Martin Phelan to serve as the royal pages Cfreshmenj of Southington High School. The massive .stone walls, grand courtyards, dungeons and underground passages confused and mystiiied us. But on that same day Sir Craig Matheson took us under his wing and gave us encouragement. Our head page was Peter Skelskey with assistant, James Nagle, Clerk of the Courts, Mary Riera and Money Lender, Joanne Fontana. Some of us soon proceeded to be accepted in court. We were very proud to learn that Marcia Earl, Judith Musto, Caroline Miller, Barbara Santago, Ruth England, Johanna Brunalli, Deanna Gibbs and Maria Fontana were chosen as heralds Ccheer- leadersj. Virginia McCullough and Joseph Del Buono were elected honorary pages at the Knights Cseniorsj annual Valentine Dance. Our pride soared sky high when we heard that Virginia Goggin became a member of the castle record book, the Emblem. As the year drew to a close we realized that we still had three more years of service in court before us. We had one consolation-We were no longer the youngest in the court. In September of '54, under the leadership of Mary Riera, Head Cavalier, and her associates, Michael Ungaro, Susan Keegan and Louise Carbone, we hoped for more activities. We were finally given our reward. First Michael Ungaro, Anthony Tarfano, John Geloso and John Orsini were wearing the armor Cjacketsj which they earned in aiding the Knights in an undefeated season of tournaments Cfootball gamesj. It becarne known that we had talent among us, and James Tassie, James Nagle, Alan Stevens, and William Schwab became Minstrels under Lady Beach's direction. The talent of the class as a whole became quite apparent when we were allowed to present our own entertainment, which has now become an annual affair. It was called the Sophomore Spotlight Revue and was the hit of the year due to Sir Matheson's direction. Do you remember Ronald Skinner, the little boy with the big dog, or the McGuire Sisters, Tosh, Tassie, and Thompson, with mops on their heads? It must have been days before George got the shaving lather out of his hair! There Is Nothing Like A Dame in the eyes of our happy sailors, who really believe in this song. The beautiful solo of Betty Lou Wilkeyson in May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You was a finale that shall always be remembered by all. That year the Honorary royal pages at the Valentine Dance were Jan Bennett and Barbara Aduskevich. Our players represented us well in all of the tournaments Cgames, basketball, baseball and trackl. Janet Martin wrote our class news in the court archives CThe Emblemj and Jane Doucette became the scribe Csecretaryb of the same. Judy None- macher and Ralph Grimaldi displayed their artistic talents by drawing for the Emblem. Sadness fell upon us as the year came to an end. We learned that Sir Matheson was leaving us to go on a pilgrimage to Woodbury. In parting we gave our best wishes and a standing invitation to visit us often. Returning in our third year as squires, Sir James Mariconda was chosen as our new counselor. Chief of Squires, Mary Riera along with John Geloso, Ralph Grimaldi, and Jane Doucette assumed their posts and proceeded to build up the treasury with the vending of refreshments to the entire court at mid-morning. The heralds Ccheer- leadersj chosen for the coming year were Caroline Miller, Johanna Brunalli, Susan Keegan. Barbara Mongillo and Judith Ahearn. Writing our class archives was Mary Riera. Joanne Fontana was selected as the Southington High School news correspondent for the Southlngton News and Hartford Courant. Those selected for the All State Chorus were James Nagle and William Schwab. Richard Orrill took part in the All State Orchestra. In December, while Al DeCaro and his musifal minstrels serenaded us, we danced in the moonlight of Clair de Lune at our Prom. Everyone was pleased when Squire 30 7iflxlfl11!ll'lll!llfl'lll3llblllIl I! ll l'.3lll' HI' l' ' Albert Lapreay and Maid Joan Mottola were named guests of honor by co-chairmen Jane Doucette and Michael Haburay. The ballroom was set up in the manner of a French cafe in red, white, and blue. To the opening strains of Moonlight Serenade everyone danced under an enormous luminous moon surrounded by hundreds of silver stars on a sky blue background. The enchanting evening ended with Moments to Remember. Our court standing was rising constantly. Judith Ahearn, James Nagle, Constance Entwistle, William Schwab, Marcia Earl, and James Thompson were chosen as hnalists in our Recital with the latter two emerging as the triumphant winners. Judith None- macher and Paul Rodriguez were the royal squires at the Valentine Dance. All of our efforts were put into the major production of the year, our Minstrel. Cendmenl: Anthony Angiletta, Ralph Grimaldi, James Nagle, James Thompson, John Berg, William Lacourciere, James Tassie, and William Schwab. The other great acts which helped make the show a success will always be remembered. Accepted into the Minstrels this year were Joanne Fontana, Maria Fontana, Deanna Gibbs, Susan Keegan, Ruth England, George Spratto, John Berg, James Thompson, and Ralph Grimaldi. Those admitted to the Honor Society of the court were Michael Ungaro, Mary Riera, Paul Rodriguez, Peter Smith, Anna McCarthy, Ann Della Vecchia, Joanne Fontana Sandra Krampitz, George Spratto, Patricia Maynard, Judith Ahearn, Caroline Miller Sally Clark, Virginia Goggin, and James Thompson. We selected a ring committee composed of Barbara Wilkeyson, Ronald Skinner Judy Nonemacher, Michael Ungaro, Betty Lou Wilkeyson, and Paul Rodriguez. Mary Riera, John Geloso, Michael Ungaro, journeyed across the moat to a distant castle KUCONNJ to learn about the makings of the feudal system, four governmentb. When September of '56 came, we were at last, full fledged knights of the castle but our morale was low due to the lack of an adviser. Our leaders, Mary Riera, Michael Ungaro, Jane Doucette, and Paul Rodriguez took charge and soon Lady Sophie Ramon- detta was chosen to help lead us on the paths of chivalry and knowledge. Caroline Miller and Johanna Brunalli were elected heads of the heralds. Joanne Fontana and William Schwab were chosen the scribes Cco-editorsj of the Chronicle, Ruth England assumed the leadership of the Crusader, and Virginia Goggin was elected Editor of the Emblem. We welcomed the new pages into court with a general entertainment and reception. Selected for All-State this year were Susan Keegan, Ruth England, James Tassie, James Thompson, Shirley Smith, and Richard Orrill. We can't ever forget those Saturday afternoon tournaments C football gamesl. Hundreds jammed the stadiums to see our men: Michael Ungaro. Anthony Tarfano, co-captains, John Berg, John Orsene, Lawrence Hall, Jan Bennett, William Lacourciere, John Geloso. Anthony Angiletta, William Benevento, Peter Lazauskas, Alan Stevens and Richard Orrill, who all fought bravely and daringly on the field of combat. The King and Queen at the Valentine Dance were Leatrice Gioia and Sterling Porter. 1 Who will ever forget John Geloso as the lnterlocuter and the eight court jesters 7 7 9 The Basketball players were Richard Lorenzo, captain, Peter Lazauskas, Albert Polak. Anthony Tarfano, and Paul Rodriguez. Johanna Brunalli received the D.A.R. Award, Robert Brookes, the Bausch-Lomb Science Award, and Sally Clark was named the local Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. The top Twelve Knights of King Phelan's Round Table were Valedictorian, Virginia Gogging Salutatorian, Sally Clark, Joyce Brown, David Jones, Peter Smith, Mary Riera, Richard Renna, William Schwab, George Spratto, Paul Rodriguez, Peter Skelskey, Joanne Fontana, Alfred Miller. In the fall, twenty seniors ran the town government as part of the Loyal Order of Moose Youth Honor Day . Because we were soon to part paths, we treated ourselves to a banquet fclassnightb at Waverly Inn, and then a royal ball fsenior proml, as a fitting climax to our wonderful four years in the castle. - 'mm-lImImlIl , ' 1 N W. 1 Q ix 5 I fi.ufp-t fxgggbb I . They will make observations from the planet transmitting their reports to Editor Virginia Goggin by means of a radio especially constructed for the purpose by Professor Alfred Miller. Listen in to Station SHS and hear the report. This is Station SHS. The planet Pluto is now communicating with O.K. Pluto! Hello, America! This is Pluto! Through our telescope We can see Hollywood. Alan Stevens, Director, presents Carol Dix, the present Grace Kelly in a revival of High Society with Peter Skelskey taking the role of her husband. Joan Wright designed the costumes for this production as well as many others. Chicago is the next center of interest. John Berg appears to be the Walter Winchell of Chicago. One of his latest rumors is a romance between Leatrice Gioia, secretary, and Sterling Porter, the police chief. It has just been confirmed that Judith Ahearn has been awarded the position of hand- writing expert for the Charles Marotto Pen Co. Alan Fournier is a professor of art at the Univrersity of Chicago and his criticism of Judith Nonemacher's masterpiece has brought both of them fame. Deanna Gibbs is the star of the Chicago Opera House. The Olympics were held here in Chicago, among those participating that we know were John Geloso, Albert Lapreay, John Orsini, Anthony Tarfano, Bill Lacourciere, Michael Ungaro, and Arthur Childs. Lt. Elaine Ennis is in charge of a WAVE recruiting center. Lee Hall's orchestra is gaining in popularity by leaps and bounds. Of course we all remember the members of the band: Ralph Sgrillo, Richard Orrill, Dominic Serafino, and Bill Carruth. Ruth England and Ralph Schuster hobnob with the elite in Newport. In New Jersey, Lenore Bukowski makes those cute little candy hearts, and keeps Betty Lou Wilkeyson busy selecting mottoes for them. Irene Sepko is sponsoring a marathon dance contest. Among those competing are Ralph Grimaldi, Judy Musto, Bill Benevento, and Barbara Santago. Our telescope is attracted by the brilliance of the Capitol Dome at Washington. On the famous White House Lawn we can see President Craig Marshall engaged in a heated debate with his Secretary of State Anthony Angiletta over the proposed treaty with the King of Comic Book Land, Robert Cady, while Secretary of the Navy, James Nagle is acting referee. Standing nearby the President is Dr. Paul Rodriguez, his chief physician, with his staff of nurses, Joanne Fontana, Maria Fontana, Dorothy Gilman, Ellen Doran, Geraldine Feeney, and Caroline Miller. In Congress, Georgiann Beausoliel, first woman speaker of the House is calling the assembly to order. We regcognize Pete Lazauskas, the new representative from Connecticut. President and Senators, Robert Sager, Ronald Frain, and Larry Hall are confirming the appointment of Williiini Schwab as Ambassador to France. Now to little old New York. Radio City catches our eye. lt seems as :hough there is a class reunion here. Models, Barbara Aduskevich and Lucy Amodio are showing off the latest styles to their former classmates, James Thompsons monologue of Hamlet is enthusiastically received, Dawn Thomas, a great jazz singer does three encores. Also praised is James Tassie's ensemble with a chorus composed of Patricia Burke, Marlene Jewett, Mary- ann Gerchak and Sheila XVrinn. In the audience is Beryl Francis. It seems that she left Leo home to baby-sit with her twelve little darlings. Also sitting out in the audience are Richard Lorenzo and Al Polack, stars of the Celtics. Patricia Maynard, the outstanding woman surgeon of the day occupies a box with JoAnn Johnson, Clara Wichroski, Nancy Krulikowski, and Agnes Sollock as her guests. Now our telescope moves down the coast to the sunny state of Florida. Ronald Skinner has opened up his own business with Emily Zawisza as his secretary. David Mac Donald is the manager of a large fruit farm with assistants David McCormick and Nick Porriello. Raymond Faryniarz and David Zdunczyk are truck drivers and deliver Mac Donald's produce. Ray Watts owns a major lumber company here. Jan Bennett, David Jones, Richard Moore, and Richard Renna have built an atomic research plant and are predicting the distant future. Some bathing beauties are spotted on Miami Beach. Relaxing and taking vacations from connubial bliss are Beverly Angelone, Joyce Badgeley, Barbara DeFelice, Carol Edele, Constance Entwistle, Josephine Orofmo, Virginia McCullough and Jennie Rabis. Farther down the beach, more beauties are sighted, basking in the sun. Here in Miami for a teacher's convention are Jane Doucette, Sally Clark, Anna McCarthy, Ann Della Vecchia, Sandra Krampitz, Shirley Smith, Joan Nash and Barbara Wilkeyson. John Mongillo, the life guard, is keeping an eye on six secretaries romping in the water on a day away from the office. You're right, they're Joyce Brown, Barbara Mongillo, Eleanor Della Vecchia, Jeanne Gelinas, Janet Martin, and Joan Pernal. Also eyeing the girls are Richard Potter, Robert Orlando, Richard I.aPier, and Michael Rich, all in the armed forces. An ocean liner is spotted far out to sea. Aboard this cruiser is Johanna Brunalli, a noted psychiatrist with her co-worker William Polci, bound for Switzerland to climb and ski in the Alps. The Reverend Peter Smith, with assistant Clark Brown, is heading for missionary work in Hungary. Three pharmacists, George Spratto, Gerald Callahan, and Richard Fragola are going to Norway in search of a rare herb which thrives in a cold land. Above the ocean liner, a passenger plane is heading back to the United States. Hostess Patricia Bouchard is tending to the needs of Judith Kashur. research chemist, and Betteann DeStefano, veterinarian. They are returning from Monaco after saving the life of the Princes favorite poodle. In the next seat are Robert Burz, and Hugh Telfer, top machinists. Marilyn Bailey is coming back from her art exhibition in Paris. The plane nears the coast and flies over the George Washington Bridge. An approaching storm is interfering with our line of vision. We can see no more and we must hurry to reach earth before the storm bursts in all its fury. fi ,gt , , .uwym lst' . .cfs I' f - qt- P, lla V- 0 ll 11. ' A 'fir' if? From the fall, when a contract is signed with O'Toole 8: Sons, publisher of the yearbook, and Loring Studio, official photographers, the yearbook staff is continually busy organizing and getting ma- terial. The yearbook goes to press in two sections, one in January and the final half on March 1. The majority of the work falls upon the editors, who must gather material, edit, rewrite, schedule pictures, plan the contents, type all material, super- EMBLEM STAFF if The Emblem, the high school maga- zine, is issued four times a year with editions in October, December, Febru- ary, April, and a supplement. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girls' Athletic Association is an organization which sponsors all girls' athletic programs. The purpose of the organization is to promote leadership, provide wholesome recreation, and induce good sportsmanship. The participation and support from the girls has rapidly increased, and this organization has been made quite active. Under the patient and able guidance of Mrs. Brackley, our adviser, sports have provided a wonder- ful diversion for all girls. In this type of program, each and every girl has a chance to prove her abili- ties. The variety of activities offered is great. Hockey, basketball, badminton, track, baseball, tennis, and mural participation. Girls can also serve as managers and committee members for the sports day held annually. These sports days are a great help in pro- moting friendship and good will with girls of other schools. The Girls' Honor teams play interscholastically and intramurals are held between classes each season. A merit system has been formed to award the girls for their endeavors in athletics. These awards are presented at an assembly held yearly for this purpose. It is hoped that this wonderful organization will continue throughout the years to help Southington girls develop their abilities and good sportsmanship. volleyball are the sports offered for class and intra- L c 91. mpg, .
