GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girls' Athletic Association is an organization around which all athletic programs are built. In May of 1955 the control of the Association passed from Miss Carroll to a group of officers and sports man- agers who will be elected yearly. The officers that served during 1955 and 1956 were: Rosalie Pizzi- tola, president, Johanna Brunalli, vice-president, Maria Fontana, secretary, and Arlene LePage, treas- urer. The purpose of our organization is to promote leadership, provide wholesome recreation, and induce good sportsmanship. Within each sport five to fifteen teams are formed and they compare in intramural programs. An honor varsity team is then selected through the process of elimination to play inter- scholastic games. The Leaders' Corp was organized this year for the junior and Senior girls. This club was organized to enable girls interested in sports to obtain practical experience in timing, scoring, and officiating. These OUR COACH AND TEACHER Miss Helen Carroll has been our friend, coach, teacher, and helping hand ever since we first stepped into the locker room as little Freshmen. Since then she has guided us and given us a large curriculum of girls' sports and has tried to teach us how to get along with others and good sportsmanship. Miss Carroll, we are deeply indebted to you for all that youve done for the girls in this school and we seniors hope that the seniors, juniors, sophomores or whoever you may have in your classes in future years will appreciate you as much as we do. girls officiated all the intramural programs. Each year the G.A.A. sponsors an annual sports day. On this day the girl athletes are given the op- portunity to demonstrate their talents. On sports days the honor teams compete as one school against the other. On play days the girls simply divide up sides. The Sports Day this year was held on March 3 and basketball and volleyball were played. Refresh- ments were served and a good time was had by all. The main objective of the Girls' Athletic Associa- tion is to have all the girls participate in the pro- gram in one way or the other, and if it wasn't for this whole-hearted support the G.A.A. would be un- able to exist. Last but not least there is Miss Carroll, who has given her time and effort for the promotion of girls' sports. She not only teaches the girls to be better athletes, but she teaches the true meaning of sportsmanship. I w ,Lf BASKETBALL The Honor Varsity Girls' Team had a very successful season. The record was four wins and one defeat. At the annual Sports Day, the Southxngton Girls won all three of their games beating Woodbury, Newington, and Litchfield. The Varsity Team consisted of Loretta Witowski, Rosalie Pizzitola, Arlene LePage, Maggie O'Hala, Mary Ann Walonoski, Ann Slack, Shirley Gemmell, Gerry Feeney, Ruth England, Loretta Kuhr, Roberta Moulton, Claudia Judd, Virginia Ellsworth, Emily Zawisa, Nancy White. The manager was Rhoda Prescher. On Thursday nights, the intramural tournament was held.
