OFFICERS: Mrs. Edna Wilson, Advisor; Carol Holmes, President; Ruby Parks, Vice President; Wilma Holland, Secretary; Bill Sutton, Treasurer; Steve Smith, Parliamentarian; Cassandra Wiggins, Historian; Mrs. Carol Jackson, Advisor. The Future Teachers of America received instruction and experience that aided them in developing readiness for college programs of teacher education. With the assistance of their advisors, FTA performed many services for teachers such as the tea, a skit presented to the faculty, and observing and teaching classes. FTA members had the opportunity to talk with student teachers at Southern Wayne and learned of their teaching experiences.

The Social Studies Department aided students in recognizing their responsibilities in our municipal, state, and federal governments, and therefore, in world affairs. World history teachers promoted the study of other cultures. Geography was the study of lands and populations. Sociology and Civics students were geared to the discovery of society ' s structure. United States history courses taught students the background, form, and problems of our country. Movies such as “Fail Safe” and “1984 gave students glimpses of our possible future.
