G?ll!Z6lZidIZ5 The Athenian was founded in 1906 as a literary organization, when debates and essays were the order of the day and about the only form of exercise a young lady could properly take. About thirty years ago when women were becoming emancipatecl the interests of its members turned to sports. Fortunately the Greek name, chosen originally for its association with books and art and culture, is equally appropriate in its suggestion of physical litness and athletic prowess. Each year one half of the student body are wearers of the green and strive valiantly to meet and out tight the Cornelians in every sport-major and minor- on the campus. Miss GARNET Hmes ..... ome iam The Cornelian Society is forty-six years old this year. It was hegun to foster interest in cultural pursuits and t.he name was chosen in honor of Cornelia, the perfect Roman matron' whose name was synonymous with every feminine virtue. Styles in femininity change as the interests of women become hroader but fundamental principles remain constant. Today's Cornelians carry their red and white banners into every lield of sport, engage in activities unheard of at the beginning of the century, hut they also cherish the things for which Cornelia stood and strive to preserve them in their ideals of sportsmanship and fair play.
