Aqua-jaguars The Southern University Aqua-jags par- ticipated in the University of Alabama Relays. This marked the first time that a black school had taken part in a major collegiate swimming competition. The diving team was entered in the Tulane Diving Championships held in New Or- leans. This also marked another first. Though the Aqua-jags season was short, there were a few occurrences which helped to brighten the picture. james jones considered by many to be one of the finest free style sprinters in the nation was rated number one by the NAIA in the 50-yard free style and sixth in the 100- yard free style. james jones is the best free style sprinter in the nation. He has an outstanding record of .22.1 and it is yet to be beaten, Swimming Team - Left to Right tlineelingjz Gary Wilson, Anthony Pickens, Henry Pickens, George Lyles, tStandingl: Coach Thompson, Mercer Lawrence, Thomas Williams, Darrol Baker, andjames jones. 314
