In a period of over fifty years, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown from one small undergraduate group to an international organization including the Bahamas and Nigeria with a membership of 40,000 women. The purpose of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women in order to im- prove the social stature, to maintain progressive interest in college life, and to he of service to all mankind. Beta Psi was established on campus in 1940. 79

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first predominately Negro greek organization, was founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; Beta Sigma Chapter was established here at Southern University on December 11, 1936.
