Dr. Williams tries to incorporate preliminary findings for Louisiana. tiA Research Project on Income Levels and Underemploy- ment in the Rural South? This project is concerned with the more than 5.5 million rural non-whites of the United States which comprises by far the largest low income segment in our society. The project is concerned with the segment of the population lover 90th$ which is located in the South. The study is directed toward developing facts and relationships useful for general policy and program formulation designed to facilitate solutions of the poverty problems concentrated among rural families in the United States. With respect to specific existing programs, data secured from this study will aid in planning area redevelopment, manpower training and retraining and develop- ment, and programs directed toward more efficient physical resource development and utilization including both agricultural and non-agricultural activities. Dr. Williams, Representatives from USDA, Economic Research Service, and Ag Assistants review statistical data which will be utilized in the analysis.

llSALVATION AND STERIC HINDRANCEii This research is considered the basic type of research, with no immediate applications. However, considerable biological applications can be made of the study since it deals with complexa- tion and chelation. Another possible biological application would be in- volved in the effects of salvation on heterocyclic nitrogen molecules. Appli- cation of the work can be made in metal chemistry since it is also com- cerned with stability of metal com- plexities. This is one of three projects being investigated by Dr. Nelson with special equipment. Dr. Nelson,s work is supported in part by the Petroleum Research Fund, Research Corporation of America. behinam. x ilPREPARATION OF POTENTIAL ANTI-VIRAL AGENTSii This research is concerned with a group of compounds containing specific type structures. A few have been known to inhibit virus growth. After these compounds are extracted, they are sent to University laboratories. The project is in its second year. Dr. Clarke is also engaged in other projects. Dr. Clarke does vacuum distillation. 203
