Research . . . With the advancements in science and technology, there is a great need for research. Southern University,s faculty as is the case in most American Colleges and Universities has accepted the challenge presented by our rapidly and constantly changing world and is engaged in many phases of research. Faculty Research here at Southern ranges from studies of the smallest microscopic organisms to the most complex problems in International Affairs. Dr. Whatley examines flowers of potato plant. Dr. Whatley is experimenting with twenty-five varieties of sweet potatoes. The aim of the experiment is to produce a sweet potato variety which is resistant to the sweet potato weevil, which is a major pest in Louisiana.

Dr. Williams tries to incorporate preliminary findings for Louisiana. tiA Research Project on Income Levels and Underemploy- ment in the Rural South? This project is concerned with the more than 5.5 million rural non-whites of the United States which comprises by far the largest low income segment in our society. The project is concerned with the segment of the population lover 90th$ which is located in the South. The study is directed toward developing facts and relationships useful for general policy and program formulation designed to facilitate solutions of the poverty problems concentrated among rural families in the United States. With respect to specific existing programs, data secured from this study will aid in planning area redevelopment, manpower training and retraining and develop- ment, and programs directed toward more efficient physical resource development and utilization including both agricultural and non-agricultural activities. Dr. Williams, Representatives from USDA, Economic Research Service, and Ag Assistants review statistical data which will be utilized in the analysis.
