DR. FELTON G. CLARK, President THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS Fellow Southernites and Friends, How marvelous it is that man can feel! No wonder we say that it is the quality of feeling that makes the difference in life. But coupled with this great privilege which the Creator has given to us is another which complements the human advantage. It is the ability to recall. No one would even like to imagine a life without memories. As time passes and as those who read this book grow older, the implications of these peculiar abilities given us as human beings will become enhanced in meaning. The scenes and pages of this Yearbook will temporarily blot out the present, taking us back to the past, permitting us to relive ite- and what is most important, will allow us to iiseeii the past experience with all of the overtones that our experience since leaving ALMA MATER has given us. What seemed ordinary when in college will be regarded as most extraordinary! What in college years had the mark of the boring and the compulsory will later be regarded as one of the most glorious privileges of existences. This Yearbook will add just that much richness to our lives. For those of us who have tried to guide our iichildrenh during their formative collegiate period, the yearbook will be a priceless possession to us also. As we thumb through its pages, we will be reminded of those who challenged us, causing us to sense that God was sharing some of His creative process with us. As we. see Southernites standing tall in all of lifeis fields of endeavorecultural, vocational, educational, social, civic, military'literally all over the world-which they do and will continue to do increasingly, we will be grateful to the editors and members of the staff for their sacrifices to make possible this beautiful and historic volume. As modestly proud as we are of our forty-five million dollar physical plant, our ten millionldollars per year being spent to operate this great educational enterprise, the presence of our many national honorary scholastic societies on Scott,s Bluff, our world-record- shattering athletic teams, the high academic respectability that attends our institution, our many facets of accomplishment otherwise, this Yearbook presents the real Southern University. In glancing through it one senses that intangible thing which although imPOSSihle to objectify is that certain quality which if a college has it, nothing else matters. And if it does not have it there is no need to try to make anything matter. Some call it WELTANSCHAUUNG. We of Southern call it the Southern University spirit. May this spirit never fade and may it possess us all our lives. Felton G. Clark
