Row: Robert Henson, Bay, Tyrone Brown SOUTHERN TECH Southern Tech was fortunate in 1987 to be visited by prominent speakers. These speakers enriched the world view of Southern Tech’s student body and fac- ulty. They brought different ideas about the world and what they thought the world should eventually be like. One of the biggest speakers to visit Southern Tech was Governor Joe Frank Harris. His visit in the fall of 1986 was one of the highlights of Techfest, a two day celebration of the construction projects occurring on ST’s campus. Governor Harris along with Pres. Cheshier and other prominent guests officially opened the new academic building with a ribbon cutting cere- mony. Another major visitor to Southern Tech was honor able Mayor Andrew Young, mayor of the city of At- lanta. Mayor Young came to ST in February in obser- vance of Black History Month. Young spoke of the inadequate educational system in this country. Mayor Young's speech was very informative and eye opening. His analysis of the educational system in this country caused ST to question the current path of education in. this country. The ST community benefitted greatly from these speakers. Hopefully next year will bring even more speakers with bright new ideas. 1. Andrew Young speaking during Black History Month. 2. Mayor Andrew Young. 3. The year of 1987 had a deal to offer where entertainment was concerned. CAB (Campus Activities Board) worked very hard to provide a variety of entertainment. Whether you like country music, classical, or comedy there was something for everyone. CAB sponsored a talent show in winter quarter, in which students displayed their talents. Tim Johnson, who sung a gospel selection, was the winner of the talent show. One of the bigger acts to entertain Southern Tech was Byron Allen, former co-host of the t.v. show “Real People”. Byron had the student population rolling as he fired fast one liners. No student was safe from Byron’s wrath as he searched the audience for potential victims of saline. After hearing Byron perform, Southern Tech felt as though it had truly been entertained by a true comedian. Southern Tech was entertained by some great acts this year. Entertainment plays a very important part of a college student's life. In years to come, Southern Tech will hopefully be entertained by bigger and better acts but for now this year was a banner year. 1. Blue grass band performing in the student center. 2. Going away to college is more than just being “On Your Own.” Going away to college means meeting strange new people, learn- ing to compromise, having valuable experiences and friendship. Living in the dorms is an experience in itself. Southern Tech has two air-conditioned dormitories which provide a home for more than 400 students each quarter. Each room is usually occupied by two students and provides a conve- nient home on campus. Learning to adjust to this new lifestyle is sometimes difficult. Although Steve Holtz and Terri Carruth do as much as they can to help each and every student, they cannot because they are only two people. Therefore, they are assisted by a staff of resident assistants (RA’s). These resident assistants have been carefully picked from many students which applied and were chosen be- cause of their individual talents and ability to get the job done. The residents know that they can go to any RA at any time to discuss any problems that may troubling them at that moment. The RA’s, are living “big brothers and big sisters” that want to make this “Moving UP” transition as smooth as possible. All of the candidates felt shaky all over, but Deneen Sorrells was shocked to hear her name over the intercom. Sorrells, escorted by Mike Bryant, represented Alpha Delta Pi of which she is the Chaplain. Also, she is involved with the Tau Alpha Pi Honor Society, Baptist Student Union, and Computer Geeks of America. Becoming a Homecoming Queen is a long and hard path to follow. To qualify for the homecoming queen candidacy, the candidate must be a student of S.C.T. for 2 quarters and maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0. Once the candidates have met these stipulations, they must be chosen by an organization or greek group to represent. Once each group has its candidate, the candidates are then subjected to a campus wide vote of which only 10 can become finalists. After the first campus wide vote, each candidate is given an interview by CAB. Now that the remaining finalists have had their interview, they will be subjected to another campus wide vote. Through the second campus wide vote, the homecoming queen and the four runners-up are picked. Deneen Sorrells and es- cort, Mike Bryant. The dance floor remained crowded as Phoenix, a local band played, played hit songs, and Kristy Tanner, one of hottest DJ’s from one of Atlanta’s hottest radio stations, 94Q, hosted the dance. H ead coach George Perides along with assistant coaches Richard Stallworth and James Waldon led the skill-packed Hornet team to victories all season. The Hornets boasted a tremendous total of 28 wins over 7 losses for the season in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA). The Hornets had five Seniors on the team which contributed to the Hornets’ success. The Seniors were Anthony Daniel, Preston Gates, Eric Jones, Fred Watson, and Dennis Williams. Assistant coach Richard Stallworth noted, “The Se- niors were a key element in our team lead- ership and unity.’’ The undergraduates on the team were Chris Carter, Craig Collard, John Boulware, Reagan Earney, Terry Below: Sophomore Reagan Earney and Junior Terry Givens watch their teammate take it to the hoop. The running Hornets held the nation’s top percentage in field goal completions at 59%. By winning the Conference Champi- onship against Nova University and North Georgia, the Hornets enjoyed home-court advantage and played Georgia Southwest- ern for the District Championship. Unfortu- nately for the Hurricanes, they felt the sting of Southern Tech’s Hornets. After that, the Hornets advanced to Kansas City to contend for the National Championship Play-offs. Taylor was the opponent and they captured the victory in the game against the Hornets with a score of 65-56. Although disappointed by the loss, the Hor nets were satisfied with an impressive sea- son. Perides was under pressure to meet the pace and get the team together to win. With the super talent of the team and Perides’ coaching skills, he got the job done. At the center of the seal is a shield, apportioned into quadrants and di- vided horizontally by a banner which carries the school motto: IMAGINATION, INNO- VATION, APPLICA- TION. At the top of the shield is a torch, an em- blem of learning and the leadership role ST has in its fields and a symbol of diligent and continu- ous application. The torch is a logo for the school: a flaming ‘“S” over the handle “T”. The upper left hand quadrant contains an open book whose pages are in motion. The book is emblematic of the various schools at ST. One page of the text refers to the non-techni- cal disciplines. The op- posite page reveals a drawing of a damped sine wave, a scientific emblem that is com- mon to all of the techni- cal departments. The upper right hand quad- rant refers to the Univer sity System of Georgia and Southern Tech’s The New Seal Along with the name change, new construction on cam- pus, and becoming a college consisting of three separate schools: School of Engineering, School of Arts Sciences, and School of Management Information, a new school seal was added. This is not the end of Southern Tech’s good fortunes; there are more to come. state-wide mission and places the three columns and arch from the System and State of Georgia Seals over an outline of the State of Georgia. The lower left- hand quadrant refers to ST by showing the main archways at the en- trance of the school. The large rock in the foreground is also a campus landmark and represents the solidity and focus of the student body. The lower righthand quadrant refers to a continuous line of alumni by show- ing a Southern Tech diploma. Over the diploma, appears a di- vider, an ancient tool that is basic to all of the technical disciplines at ST. The dividers also ap- peared on the old seal of the school. 77 Vice President for Academic Affairs — Harris T. Travis 2 — Charles E. Prof. 83 Dean of the School of Engineering Technology Bill Rezak 84 : SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY LOG SUMMARY The School of Technology is made up of the eight Engineering Technology Associate and Bachelor of Science degree programs (Apparel, Architectural, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, and Textile) and the Con- struction Administration program. These programs account for approximately 3400 student majors and 70 faculty. This past year the academic arm of the college published its first ever Long Range Plan. The purpose of this document is to define curriculum and laboratory development plans for the next several years. This will allow us to plan the appropriate application of resources to support these plans. Several new options minors hae been developed and implemented in the Technology School. These include manufacturing, graphics, industrial digital controls, microcomputer controls, and quality assurance. During the course of the year the college received quality improvement funding in the amount of $500,000 for enhancement of laboratory facilities. Major laboratory acquisitions have been made with this money. Approxi- mately $2.5 million in laboratory enhancement is still required if we are to offer state-of-the-art technical programs based on computer automation. In 1986 the Georgia General Assembly approved a $1.6 million authorization for construction of a Center of Excellence in Apparel and Textile Manufactur ing on the Southern Tech campus. This new building, which is currently under design, will contain approximately 20,000 square feet of laboratories, class- rooms and faculty offices. The laboratories will include apparel processing, textile processing, textile testing, robotics and instrumentation, and computer aided design computeraided manufacturing. The primary purpose of this new Center will be to better serve the apparel, texile and related industries in Georgia, while attracting more technically oriented graduates to these indus- tries. Student enrollment in the Architectural Engineering Technology program significantly increased during the past academic year. This has resulted in the addition of a new faculty posiiton for the department. The AET Computer Aided Design Drafting Laboratory is the department show piece. Quarter credit hour generation for the Civil Engineering Technology pro- gram has risen sharply during the past year, justifying an additional faculty position. The CET Computer Laboratory was developed, along with acquisi- tion of computerized surveying and plotting equipment. In Fall Quarter 1985, Southern Tech began offering the Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Administration. The curriculum for this program was developed in concert with the Associated General Contractors, the construc- tion industry association helping to sponsor the program. This curriculum is designed to meet accreditation requirements of the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). Southern Tech was formally accepted as a member of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC). With the help of ASC, it is anticipated that the program will become accredited by ACCE by 1990. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology department made major revisions in its curricula during the past year. A two-course sequence in differential equations is now required by baccalaureate students, the associate degree program is eight qu arters instead of six; and new courses have been developed for fiber optics, bit-slice technology, artificial intelligence, optoelec- tronics, and industrial controls. Two minors for non-electrical students were developed. A $50,000 matching grant was awarded to ECET by the National Science Foundation for development of a Fiber Optics Laboratory. The Industrial Engineering Technology department initiated a Quality Assur ance minor during this past year. A new minor in Technical Sales and Distribu- tion is being added this summer. The potential for a loss control and risk management minor is under consideration. The material handling, methods of work, work measurement, and plant layout laboratories were relocated to the new Academic Building. The Mechanical Engineering Technology associate degree program has been revised to require seven quarters rather than the previous six. A manufac- turing option was developed for the bachelor degree program. A grant of over $300,000 was received from the Georgia Research Consortium for the develop- ment of an Automated Manufacturing Laboratory. In order to aid in the development of curriculum utilizing this new laboratory, a $17,000 grant was received from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. 85 0 EER % COE TS TH ob PIE YOM ee E PENDENT GRRE FFE oT AaeaaisaidaesAaiies nell ee Es Me Seat tated tinea | einai MER | Serena Ba | Me | ie 87 Apparel Textile Lawerence T. Young—Prof. 89 Dean of School of Management and Information Systems Bob Yancey 3 THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT 8 A significant event for Southern Tech this year was the creation of the jim yi School of Management. This occurence signalled the beginning of a new era u for us — Graduate Studies!! Inaugurated in the Fall of 1986, the new graduate degree is named the Masters Degree in Technology Management (MSTM). This degree program is designed for people who possess training and experi- ence in technical fields, but who wish to learn more about the field of management. “The program came about as a result of-input which Southern Tech received from several of our alumni, After working for several years in the businesses and industries of their respective technological fields, many alumni were faced with opportunities to become managers. Because they had no management training; however, they frequently had to forego those oppor. tunities. Over time, many former students requested that Southern Tech initiate a graduate program which would enhance their opportunities first, to be selected to management occupations, and secondly, to be successful in those management positions. Our program was designed to accommodate both of those objectives . . . ’’ according to Dr. Robert J. Yancy, who serves as Dean of the School of Management. The original class consisted of 39 engineers and technologists. About half of them were Southern Tech Alumni, while the other half represented seventeen other colleges including the University of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Alabama A M, and the University of Georgia, among others. The students range in age from 33 to 56 years, and are black, white, Oriental, African, Asian, Persian, and South American. The program currently has three full-time equivalent faculty members and expects to increase to four faculty members for next school term. The program of study for the MSTM degree involves a twelve-course curriculum of which ten course requirements are specified, and two are elective. Students, who attend classes twice per week in the evenings, may select up to three of these courses per quarter. The capstone to the program is a major research project through which the student will have the opportunity to demonstrate abilities in management research, writing, and problem solv- ing. This ten credit hour project provides valuable application of the skills which managers must apply in the workplace. Requirements for admissions to the MSTM degree program are: an undergraduate degree in engineering, technology, or one of the applied sciences two years professional work experience in an engineering environment test scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam three letters of reference from an employer and or a former college profes- sor. “We are very excited about this program...” Dr. Yancy said, “...and we have very optimistic expectations and projections for its future growth and success.” Lip 92 Computer Information Systems Robert A. One Day a group of girls were sitting on the rock, and they took a vote and decided to form their own sorority. Now this was a big step for them and the school because there had never been a Women’s Greek Organization at Southern Tech. The girls decide to call their organization a local sorority and gave it the name of Alpha Chi Alpha (AXA). In 1979, a year later, they petitioned to several national women’s fraternities, and they expressed an interest in one group called Gamma Phi Beta. The girls took a vote, and it was decided that Gamma Phi Beta offered everything that they were looking for in a National Sorority. After one year of colonization, AXA was chartered as the Delta Omicron Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta on Janugary 26, 1980. The SME is a professional ganization designed to amiliarize the student with ie latest technology used in 1anufacturing. Such areas as utomation, robotics, and omputer-integrated-manu- with the. facturing (CIM), as well as lathe and milling machines and welding are published in SME’s monthly magazine, along with a chance to receive others called ‘CIM Technology,’ ‘Robotics Today,’ or ‘Machine Vision Quarterly.’ With the use of these magazines, the mechanical student can have this up-to-date information at his disposal. This brings the total number of lieutenants in the total Army who matriculated at Southern Tech to eleven in the program's five short years. During the school year, Tech students participated in three field training exercises to Fort Benning, a military ball, orientation trips to missle command, Redstone Arsenal, AL, The Army Aviation School, Fort Rucker, AL, and to the Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, VA. Amendments to the constitution were approved, officers elected, and now the ISA is well on its way toward a permanent place in the SCT community. The ISA is dedicated to aid and support foreign students with their activities. The organization is open to all Southern Tech students with a focus in International Student con- cerns and on fostering a positive International atmosphere at South- ern Tech (as per the Preamble of the ISA Constitution). In the fall quarter, ISA held a highly successful dance on campus with guests from five local colleges. Winter quarter saw the excitement at a Raffle with a $900.00 Simmons Hide-a-Bed donated as a prize. As a final event of the academic year, the ISA sponsored an international dinner for members and select guests. Plans for next year include a Cultural Festival for the campus and community. Everybody else obviously knew something | didn’t. In the end the job proved to be rewarding. Through all the rough times: Pulling all nighters, pushing deadlines, keeping appointments, etc., I’m glad I had the chance to to try and make a better yearbook. The editorship of a yearbook is an experience for a person who is willing to put forth an upmost effort and an enormous amount of time. | would like to thank my staff for coping with my various mood changes changes — if a person doesn’t normally have them, he will once he takes this job — because without them, this book would have never gotten off the the ground. Special thanks go to Guy Barrett, Ed Bernard, Doris Combs, and and Derek Stewart for their support and being ready and willing to do assignments on the spur of the moment. Another special thanks go to the groups and organizations who submitted the information that was needed to help print this book. We, the log staff, hope you, SCT student body, enjoy this book as much as we did putting it together. Ue ga be Feat y = ws a eg Ail gf Om LOE at Pot SO oT we ee GFF
